I am pretty proud to see my software in use, I wrote the live sonar charts for Navionics. I used that app to map tricky, poorly charted places using a dinghy equipped with a sonar.

That’s cool. Is this the sonar layer view which I’ve probably once used before?
@ponchietto3 жыл бұрын
@@lars-sp Nope, this is done on the fly in your machine and store locally. The sonar layer collects the data from the users. The data is filtered trying to deal with wrong or missing sonar calibrations, tide, noise, precision, thermocline fake depths, compare different user data. Finally these changes are applied to the original cartographic data. In my opinion the main problem with sonar char layer is that the 'confidence' of the user data and which part of the model have been enhanced using reliable user data and which part has simply interpolated the batimetric data is not exposed to the user. This layer is reliable in high traffic zones (near ports for example), outside of those regions the map is as good as the quality of the user submitted data. An example of how complicated is to work with user data? I had to filter for users forgetting they sonar on while carrying their boat on a trailer over bridges.
@cgem84263 жыл бұрын
@@ponchietto That's really cool. Thank you for a stellar feature. I understand what you're saying: I have a Vexilar system, but it's an in-hull mounting, so I'm creating really messy depth track. I get the sonar readings that are good enough for my needs, but I've been thinking that my data is hardly usable for the community. I suppose there is an algorithm that blocks messy data like that from contaminating the shared charts. Being the good boy, I feel oddly guilty about that. Having said that, I feel like there is very little sonar community enhancements in my home waters on the Finnish coast.

This is a beautiful and dangerous trip. You have a huge volatile glacier, large pieces of ice floating under water, not to mention the largest terrestrial carnivore on the planet (The Polar Bear) roaming free in the area. Every episode I watch I think "hmm I wonder when this is" in the episode we get an offhand mention of "July". In my opinion adding log date would add flavour to the production.

Mesmerising is the word. Epic is too small a word. Visiting relatives we went on a cruise from Seattle up to Glacier National Park in 2011. At one point he cruise ship stopped for an hour just 100 metres from a glacier. Drifting by we could see the process of millenia right in front of us - snow on the mountains, compacting into ice, glaciers forming, calving, and icebergs slowly marching out to sea. A very humbling experience, observing my inconsequence.
