I have begun to be amazed that over more than a millennia at this point their art style NEVER changed. The exact same curves in the depictions of human faces, bodies and hands, the exact same proportions of characters, all without any perceptible variation. That is truly astounding.
@Mikelaxo
@Mikelaxo 2 ай бұрын
That art style was very deliberate and was probably considered to be sacred. Perhaps the only time in which it changed was during the reign of Akahnaten. That, and also the fact that there's non royal art that has been found depicting other styles, shows that they were capable of drawing differently, they just chose to draw like that

Senusret the III's policy of ordering the nomarchs to live in the capital to keep an eye on them reminds me of what Louis the 14th did to his nobles.

Another example would be the system the Tokugawa Shoguns set up in Japan for their Daimyos. Coincidentially that happend almost at the same time as the French kings did it (and who really got the ball started there was Cardinal Richelieu).

One year I got a nice card from one of my twin boys in 4th grade that wished me a 'happy 3980th birthday' amused, I asked him why he thought I was that age. He answered that I was so old, I must have been born in 1970 BC. Wasn't sure if I should be mad or happy I look so good for my age. Chose to laugh. Thanks for showing me the Era I was born ( according to Twin A). I DO look much better than Egyptian mummies !! 😀

thank you for keeping this series and all the effort you put into your videos. Bob Brier in one of his lectures said that:" middle kingdom art differs greatly than old kingdom art. in the beginning of the middle kingdom. it seems that there was a disruption of craft in painting and statue building . that's why the first pharaoh of the middle kingdom statue looks disproportionate"
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy Жыл бұрын
My pleasure, thanks for watching! Yeah that is true but in some cases, the statues were even more lifelike, especially those of Senusret III. I had read, I think in Toby Wilkinson's book, that the 12th Dynasty kings especially wanted to appear more human and inject more emotion into their statues. I think the old art of pyramid building suffered the most. The Middle Kingdom pyramids were shabby with the interiors of most made out of mudbrick, which is why they didn't last the test of time like the Pyramids at Giza and other Old Kingdom sites. Interesting stuff! Thanks so much for watching, really appreciate it and stay tuned for more!

To give you an idea of where you are in time during the Middle Kingdom of Egypt: -Mesopotamia a dark age is in progress with the Gutians overrunning the Neo-Sumerian Empire that Babylon & Hammurabi would bring to an end. -The Indus Valley civ is in full swing. -The Minoans of Crete are beginning to develop. -The semi-mythical Xia Dynasty of China is in progress. -By the end of the Middle Kingdom The Olmec over in Mexico would be beginning their development. -In Peru the Caral-Supe(Norte Chico) civ would come to an end. -The Elamites in Iran are also doing quite well with the rise of Sukkalmah period and the expansion of Susa despite the Mesopotamian dark age. Probably because of it.

@@HistorywithCy I love your objective viewpoint, Cy. Many people who discuss ancient Egypt somehow let race seep into their narrative and use the opportunity to take digs at black people with very little logic. You've managed to stick to the facts so far and been laser focussed. Along with source material from Herodotus and Diodorus Siculus, my references are Cheikh Anta Drop, Toby Wilkinson, Robert Bauval and Thomas Brophy amongst others. Some "experts" have such huge blinders that they might just as well be laymen like everyone else. About 20 years ago, I debated Bob Brier via email on Cleopatra's race after his lecture on the History of Egypt - The Great Courses series and he conceded that she very well might have been part Egyptian (black) in spite of her Macedonian linage. When I hear anyone arguing stringently on that subject one way or the other, my visceral reaction is that they are not being reasonable. They generally prove me right when they start making ad hominem attacks. I will continue watching and voice my opinion if necessary. Thanks again.

Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Oh I've covered that term in previous videos so maybe didn't cover it again here. I think it's interesting that most kings of this dynasty have names ending in -t. I thought that was feminine. I have read somewhere that we often don't know the gender of Egyptian kings, because we only have a name in a list. Is there some truth to that? Not in this dynasty perhaps. It seems to be well-known.

The ancient capital city of the Middle Kingdom Itj-Tawy has been found as of 2016. It was recently found using space mapping technology. Its quite fascinating to read. Wikipedia registers that the ancient capital is still not been found as of 2023 but articles online clearly state otherwise. The city was found by Dr. Sarah Parcak.

Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes, I know of her but the thing is her claims, such as finding 15+ new pyramids, have not been confirmed because many of the proposed sites she has mapped have not been excavated yet so it can't be taken as fact just yet. Maybe one day. Thanks for sharing!

@@HistorywithCy true got a point. I kinda figured that it was fact this point due to her finding it around the areas believed the city was to be. You would think they would have started excavating by now.

@@LagunaShirogane Yeah there are so many sites that still have to be examined and to get the permits and teams together takes a while so I can why it's taking so long, but hopefully soon!
