Here's a look at one of London's most ancient and historically important sites. The Charterhouse in Clerkenwell was originally a plague pit but has had many incarnations since medieval times. Julian McDonnell "Joolz Guides" takes you on a tour with one of the brothers.

After Sir Walter Manny acquired permission from the pope to build a Carthusian Monastery here it suffered greatly when King Henry Viii came along.
One poor prior had his arm nailed to the top of the gate which still stands today.
Queen Elizabeth I held her first court at the Charterhouse too!
Later it was acquired by the richest man in England, Thomas Sutton, who opened a school for poor boys and a home for elderly men fallen on hard times.
It was within these very walls that two of the rules of football originated. The off-side rule and the throw in rule.
There is also a free museum and beautiful gardens.
Many film productions have taken place at The Charterhouse (which comes from the French "Chartreuse")
Why not organise a visit to the Charterhouse www.thecharterhouse.org/visit-us/ and don't forget to say Pip Pip Tally Ho so they know you saw my film!

It is positively criminal that the BBC doesn't give this man his own show. This is far more enjoyable than most docu-series. This is coming from a young lady & lover of the theater. I hope to someday travel to the UK (I am in the USA) but until then thanks Joolz for giving me a small but valuable taste of London.

How is it that this guy has not been given his own docu-series by the BBC??? He's knowledgeable and witty which makes him perfect for TV.

Very interesting. Last time I went to London I went to this exact spot but had no idea about this Charterhouse. I only went there because I wanted to see the place where Hercule Poirot lived in the TV series. Next time I have to check out this Charterhouse too.

I was going to mention that but I edited it out. I didn't know so many people were fans! It's one of many art deco buildings they used around London. I mention one in my Highgate video too.

Sadly, it's typical of London to have such amazing old sites surrounded by (mostly) ugly new buildings. But an astonishing place, fascinating, Joolz!

Actually London has awesome modern architechture. If it's owned by a big enough company, they realise that the building has to be a statement if it's going in London. But yeah, there are some ugly tower blocks and office blocks, a disgusting Novotel on the river...

Starting at 4:28 when you are going through the door into the monks hallway with the original stonework.. If you look back there is someone standing there not moving with an odd pose and then moves weirdly into the wall instead of the door... Maybe I'm seeing things but it looks like a ghost to me.. Hmmmm... Great video!

Thanks so much for posting this. Both my grandfather & great grandfather spent their final days as "Charterhouse Brothers," and both are now interred in the Charterhouse Cemetery, located next to the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Little Hallingsbury, Bishop's Stortford. I visited my grandfather in Charterhouse just before the rest of our family emigrated to Canada, but as that was in 1956, I really appreciate this opportunity to get a real feel for his final home. Again - my sincere thanks.
