This area has been covered many times so we have concentrated on the lesser known places along this walking tour. With London still under lockdown the west end offers great opportunities for filming whilst staying at a social distance.
To celebrate Florence Nightingale's 200th birthday we start at her statue. Her birthday is also national nurse's day. It is also 200 years since King George III died, England's longest reigning king.
Then we walk though Trafalgar Square and learn about St Martin in the Fields and the Duke of York's scorned mistress. How the houses of Parliament got burnt down and why the lions have cat's feet.
Then it's off to see where Charles Dickens worked as a boy, Scrooge's door knocker and Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues.
Then it's off the The Strand to see The Savoy and why a cat might dine with you and where we drive on the right.

I’m so grateful to this channel, I was born and raised in London, as were my parents grand parents, great grandparents and so on... you get the picture. I’ve traced family tree back to mid 1800’s all London, apart from a great grandmother from Ireland. I live in Hampshire and miss London dreadfully, especially in lockdown. There are plenty of reliable source materials on the history of London and its development since the year of its foundation by the Romans in AD 43. Just conduct your own research and you will find it a rewarding experience. I'm sure your local library or online research will provide all the information. What you will find if you do this is the magnitude of London's history. It is multi layered and the more you dig the more you will find!

I noticed that statue of King George III on my trip to London! We made sure to take a picture of it because of all the statues one can find in London, he's someone that would be relevant to my mates and relations back home in the USA. Glad to see you're still out and about. Making sure to get sunshine, exercise, and fresh air is so beneficial as opposed to staying cooped up inside - and thank you so much for taking the opportunity to share this amazing city that is so dear to many, especially since we definitely can't travel there right now... not to mention commemorating this strange, unprecedented time when the streets are so empty! We have 12 of the bells from St Martin In The Fields church here in Perth, Western Australia. They are located in our Bell Tower on the banks of the Swan River. I think they are 600-700 years old.

Wonderful, Joolz-- when I was in London last summer, it was the hottest day on record and so naturally I wandered 'round in a sweaty, jet-lagged haze around all of these very iconic streets and sights. Strange to see it all so deserted. The Crypt in St. Martin's is a marvellous place in which to escape crowds, and the food is very good and reasonable priced for central London, and I sat around back of Gordon's Wine Bar and had a break in the shade before strolling through those very gardens. Believe it or not, I concluded my rambling with a pint at the Nell Gwynne. When I lived there a million years ago, I used to work at a now-defunct restaurant on Northumberland Avenue and drink at the Sherlock Holmes. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane-- both recent and distant. London-- I shall return!!!

@@chrisomeara5795 But it's the low pollution that's making the sky so blue. Vehicle emissions are down and there are much fewer airplanes leaving vapour trails. So you actually have clear air in London. And you see what pollution you live in normally

I am seriously missing my trips to London. This is the next best thing! Just dying of thirst looking at those closed pubs. The Farting Lane is perfect exit when leaving the stalls of the Savoy theatre instead of climbing all the stairs in there to get out! Plus you can slip into The Coal House for an after theatre drink!!

Can you please consider hopping on a train for a day trip down to Brighton when the lockdown is over? Perhaps even a weekend by the seaside, spent wandering around Brighton and Hove. I'm an Aussie, but spent a fondly remembered 5 years residing there back in the 80's/90's. Would dearly love to see some of my old haunts get the Joolz' treatment. Thank You Jules & Simon for my Sunday video. I had to cancel a trip to London back in March; I needed a "fix." I love walking the Strand! So many interesting things to see. I know Northumberland St! The SH Pub is great and actually has good food too. Craven Passage is fun too; I had a drink outside the Shovell. As an American I thought I should do Franklin's house; Boring! Absolutely love Embankment Gardens! I'm hoping I can come visit again in October, we will see ... Take Care 😊

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that the Savoy Hotel and surrounding land is part of the Duchy of Lancaster, and is owned personally by The Queen in her role as Duke of Lancaster. This ownership provides a healthy stream of income to the Duchy revenues, which are used by the Queen for her personal expenses. It's information like this which provides a deeper understanding of London's history and how the way private ownership of land in London has shaped it's appearance and development over time.

I was in London on business a few years ago--we had an office on The Strand and I stayed at the Charing Cross hotel. Thinking back on it, I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't have the chance to explore the area a bit more. Perhaps I'll find a way to have a leisurely visit again.

This video popped up in my feed a few days ago. How delightful a discovery! It's been close to 30 years when I was first in London. I lived in Ealing for 3 months and did lots of sightseeing. This brought back memories. It seems no matter how long you live somewhere, there is always some interesting bit you missed! I look forward to watching more of your videos. Love your guides, I've read English literature, since I was a kid, and I used to feel guilty about it till I realized I could only read and talk English, till much later I tried to learn other languag re s. Interesting fact: the building which we see at 1.49 directly behind the equestrian statue of George III is now called Oceanic House (it is around the back of the Canadian Embassy which faces Trafalgar Square)... but at the turn of the 20th Century it was the offices of the White Star Line, the shipping company who owned the Titanic. They sold tickets for the fateful maiden voyage from that very building.

Joolz, I am in love with your walking tours! First, you are an impossibly charming man, second, your knowledge of London and the stream of conscious way you tell your stories is so interesting and third - and most importantly - you are getting me through the pandemic lockdown! I adore London and was there in October. I was supposed to be there now for the Chelsea Garden show and so to be able to take little day trips of London though you has been fantastic. Also saw you documentary on Petcairn Island and loved that as well. Shouldn't you have your own talk show or something. The BBC is missing out on a real jewel...or Jool! Keep it up!
