This week, we take a closer look at one of the nations most impressive cromlech. Known as Tinkinswood burial chamber, or Siambr Gladdu Tinkinswood, it’s huge capstone is arguably the largest in Britain, perhaps all of Europe....
This megalith is in the small village of St. Nicholas, just 7 miles from Cardiff city centre. Dolmens, or Cromlechs, are the most common megalithic structure across Europe, and Tinkinswood is classified as being in the Severn-Cotswold type. Like a lot of ancient sites we’ve visited, this one also goes by many different names: Castell Carreg - “Stone Castle”, Tinkinswood, Maes-Y-Filiast, Llech-Y-Filiast, Gwal-Y-Filiast.
Join us as we delve into the history and folklore of the site.
