This week, we take a closer look at one of the nations most impressive cromlech. Known as Tinkinswood burial chamber, or Siambr Gladdu Tinkinswood, it’s huge capstone is arguably the largest in Britain, perhaps all of Europe....
This megalith is in the small village of St. Nicholas, just 7 miles from Cardiff city centre. Dolmens, or Cromlechs, are the most common megalithic structure across Europe, and Tinkinswood is classified as being in the Severn-Cotswold type. Like a lot of ancient sites we’ve visited, this one also goes by many different names: Castell Carreg - “Stone Castle”, Tinkinswood, Maes-Y-Filiast, Llech-Y-Filiast, Gwal-Y-Filiast.
Join us as we delve into the history and folklore of the site.

Nice, also remember to visit St Lythans when you are back, made from the same type of stone and practically just round the corner! Got to say we have mixed feelings about Bryn Celli Ddu... the concrete lintles, 'replica stones' and disregard for original shape, or position, make it more of a 'modern interpretation' than a reconstruction... but that's a topic for a future video...😅

I would like to ask what is the distribution of Bluestones from the Preseli hills of Wales at Carn Goedog and Craig Rhos-y-felin quarries, at other Neolithic sites in Wales?
@coraljackz
@coraljackz 6 ай бұрын
That's an interesting question. Around Pembrokeshire's Neolithic sites, the Bluestones are understandably very common. We've noticed bluestones at numerous other sites further afield but haven't yet documented them in a quantifiable manner... so we'll have to get back to you with a better answer as soon as we can!

Some great video and nice quality images long barrows and the ancient stone's are not well represented in Wales and good to see them shown with locations. It is well known that before the advent of metal that the British isles were a land Goddess and Moon venerating peoples, portrayed with some depth in Maria Wheatleys new book The Secret History of StoneHenge and to me it seems that the migration from the levant and later Anotolia brought the Sun worshipping patriarchal society and beliefs with them as you have mentioned the long barrows represented a different society and belief system to the ones that came later.

@@coraljackz it’s something I generally have a bee in my bonnet about. Background music on my device always seems a bit too loud.

@@tubthump thanks for the feedback, we got a bit of criticism for our audio on a video 4 months ago (also a tinkinswood video funnily enough) that sounded quite distorted on some people's devices... after a bit of testing at home we found it sounded fine on the PC and our main TV, but sounded terrible on surround sound or my nice headphones... so now we check the audio on all our devices before uploading... There is also personal preference at play, I love music with everything so should probably tone that down 😅
