Ancient Mesopotamia proved that fertile land and the knowledge to cultivate it was a fortuitous recipe for wealth and civilization. Learn how this "land between two rivers" became the birthplace of the world's first cities, advancements in math and science, and the earliest evidence of literacy and a legal system.

@@nantzstein3311 For once, slavery is always a big deal, no matter who enslaves whom and at what point in history. The other point is that the video talked about the expansion of the Persians. They didn´t just conquer Babylon, they didn´t enslave neither the Babylonians nor the Jews but rather decided to free them. I think that is an important thing to know when one talks about that exact conquest.

We have more information about the Greek, Egyptian and Roman civilizations that's why. Mesopotiamian history is important so it's taught, but since we lack information about the specifics of Mesopotamia compared to the other great civilizations, then it's only natural that it would be pushed to the fringes of notoriety (at least it is in the wider public sphere).

@@AlaaAdile cool but understand that Babylon wasn't inhabited by one people group like the Assyrians with their cities, the Babylonian and neo-Babylonian empires were controlled by two different people groups (amorites controlled the first Babylonian empire, and the Chaldeans the neo-Babylonian empire), with many migrations happening into the city since it's foundation. i think it is very hard to understand the ancestral history of Babylon, but i think most people inhabiting Iraq before the arabization of the area were a mixture of the inhabitants since the fall of the neo-Babylonian empire, it is also very hard to know how much the arabization of the area effected the ancestry of the already settled people since it was a pretty important center for muslims during the Islamic empire and could have seen more migrations from Persians to Arabs. BTW, are you a christian?

These were in Kyklades and Krete- and by 15th century BC the Achaeans in Peloponnese, mentioned in Hettite texts as "Akhaiwasa" or something. When I was in college I learned quite a bit about ancient Babylon, and the documents that archeologists have recovered were a real shock to me. They had most of the kinds of mercantile relationships and laws that we have today, including rental agreements for land, etc. Contracts regarding everything from land-transfers to financial loans, agreements for shared ownership of businesses, even special court-systems to adjudicate commercial and contractual disputes. It was stunning to me how much it sounded like modern commercial documents.

Babylon and Media fell under Persian rule in the 6th century BC (Cyrus the Great). Then how did you bring turkic here? @@kazimahin790 The Persian conquest only did away with the Assyrians political freedom. As a cultural entity Assyria survived on past both the Arab, Persian and the First part of Mongol rule. The Mongol ruler Hulagu Khan had a Christian wife who belonged to the Assyrian Church of the East. She interceded on behalf of the native population, who were predominantly Christian, sparing them. So the Mongols persecuted Muslims and Jews whereas Christians were relatively spared. Most of the destruction of Mesopotamian heritage happened with the Timurid invasions. The Timurid conquest is responsible for the destruction of cities like Ashur and also the decline in the Assyrian population in Iraq, which until that point were predominantly Assyrian.

With the passage of time there is historical evidence of empires trading “deities” and idols Mesopotamia is one of the oldest civilizations and their mythologies got adopted by later civilizations and got tweaked For example, in pre-Islamic Arabia there was the Mesopotamian deity Ishtar modified into a male god.

Love this. Been wanting something more of an overview of this. More videos of places like this on the ancient Middle East, Russia, and Africa would be appreciated. A video on the story of discovery of how Amazonians made Terra Preta would be great, as many textbooks got it wrong about their practices for so long. And for balance, a video on how the Vietnamese make something similar out of rice hulls, which has a slightly better profile compared to wood charcoal, interestingly.

Love Ancient Civilizations. With the big ones, we can see how different theirs were from ours. Knowledge and learning were huge: art, architecture, writing, and science which they shared & spread. Ours, well, we chase gold / money and not knowledge.

Baghdad was the capital of the abbasid empire. lmfao. iraq only lost power in the iron age when persia qonquered babylon and from that up until a few centuries later was iraq irrelevent but it came back hard with the abbasids.

Assyria and Persia does not exist in western schools even though these 2 civilizations influenced greece and roman empires in many ways and eventualy the west world, two nations which alot of the so called “medieval European” things ,such as the knight you had in medieval Europe, the crowning of kings, the deepest parts of the cultural, majority of the military equipments of medieval Europe ,the administration system the schools and big part of the medieval science, alchemy, astronomy, engineering and art directly come from. Middle East is actually ancient Europe, its part of the western world and western world is part of the Middle East. it’s history of European civilizations. Those who study history surely know this fact. Just as much as Europe influenced Middle East in science , technology and culture in the past 200 years, Middle East influenced Europe in the past 2000 years.

In fact allot, if not all of ancient Greek thoughts were simply adopted from Mesopotamia, Anatolia or the Iranian Plateau. Even their legends about Zeus and their gods are 1 to 1 copy from Summerian legends. See also Sumerian Deity Anu.

@@topgears7775 About the Elam part and adopting from Sumeria, I would be a little more cautious. Elam is roughly as old as Sumer and they were rather competitors to each other. Elam actually has most of it's cultural goods and ideas from Jiroft civilization also know to the Sumerians as Aratta.

Ezek ez első városállamok pontosan annyira rejtélyesek, mint Machu Picchu az Andokban.
