For future reference, a simple siphon with no pump has worked good for me when draining pools of water like this. I used 2" pvc with a rubber fernco coupling at the highest point (in order to break open the pipe for filling the lower portion with water [closed ball valve at the outlet end] to generate the suction necessary to start) with the lowest point behind the dam as low as possible below the lowest point in pool. Fill lower end from high point with ball valve closed, connect the fernco coupling to the pipe extending down into the pool, the open the ball valve and let gravity do the work. Use a weight, and a 2 LTR bottle to float/position the inlet end (with a 45° fitting) about 3-4 inches below the surface -- this prevents a tiny whirlpool from sucking air and beaking the siphon.

Get yourself a few of the pieces of wood you Mill and make a rectangle frame and put hardware cloth over one side. Get some posts and mount it over the trailer so there's a drop on one side. On top of the hardware cloth, put 2 diagonal pieces so it creates a funnel for the run off. If you want it to work even better mount something like a sander to it. You now have a screen for your pond material and it might save you a tri axle load of sand.

Couple things: 1) Happy Father’s Day! 2) Don’t skimp on the clay. The engineer in me gravitates toward the 2ft thick compacted clay. My opinion might change with test data on clay fraction in the particle size distribution of the borrow clay, and/or permeability data on a compacted specimen of the clay. Any nonuniformity in the compacted clay could have higher permeability and lead to leaking. Knowing compaction behavior of the clay is also valuable. Compacting wet of optimum moisture content generally leads to lower permeability.
@JW-fq1pp Жыл бұрын
We had a pond built at our place, the terrain was mostly sand. The builder averaged between 18 - 24 inches with the clay blanket that he was able to get from the hillside nearby. I'd also consider making the pond a bit deeper since all this other work is getting done to fix it.
@shanejarvis1108 Жыл бұрын
I agree with the 2 foot (600mm) thickness, and it needs to be taken up the slope to a point above the level of the spillway. I didn’t hear the guy talk about using a sheep’s foot roller, but it will be essential. The clay should be placed within the range of 85 to 110% of optimum moisture content in 200 mm layers, with the roller used until it “walks out” of the clay. By that I mean that the roller only makes a minimal indentation into the clay. If you don’t place the clay within that moisture range, you’ll have problems with the clay expanding and contracting. You should also prepare the bottom of the dam after you’ve excavated to slop. You should rip it about 300mm deep, then compact it with the sheep’s foot roller. It would really help to know the moisture content of the clay, and the optimum moisture content. Without knowing those two properties you really are working blind. If this bloke with the earthmoving gear says that you only need to track roll the clay, sack him. Get him away from the property as fast as you can. The whole point of having tracks is to reduce the pressure exerted on the ground, for compaction you need a high pressure to be exerted on the ground. Track rolling is not a substitute for using a sheep’s foot roller. Hopefully you can get the dam completed properly this time.
@ProductiveRecreation Жыл бұрын
@Murfles_McGee Geomembranes are an option, but at this scale more expensive than clay. It would take edge joining rolls together. “Welding” geomembrane is done all the time in landfill construction, but would likely not be cost effective here compared to simple compacted clay. Plus, any defect in the geomembrane could leak rapidly if the underlying soil has high permeability. For this reason landfills have a geomembrane on top of compacted clay.
@ProductiveRecreation Жыл бұрын
@@shanejarvis1108 I 100% agree with this - 6 inch lifts and a sheepsfoot roller for the kneading and high contact stress beneath the feet. A true sheepsfoot roller too! I’ve been seeing more and more padfoot rollers being called sheepsfoot. There is a difference!
@genesispuredeaf2390 Жыл бұрын
@@shanejarvis1108if you were a better listener, you would already know that a sheeps foot is in the plan. The “bloke” has repaired multiple ponds in addition to other projects… that seemed to be authenticated skill sets for a meticulous accountant that had already learned his lesson. Your rant, while it might be valuable to someone else adds no value here…especially since you are just a random FB person who has provided zero points of credibility. Everything you said could be copy/paste from a google search (doesn’t confirm nor exclude its value).
