Hello. Why not just sprinkle clay into the water to seal leaks? Like just spray a bunch of clay soil. Would that work, as it settles to the bottom?

When comparing to his sister's 80k swimming pool, how many labor hours do you think she had compared to his? How much stress and headaches compared to his for years to come after it was determined to be "finished"? Idk, I'm also thinking there was a lot more nickel and dime factors to add such as fuel costs, etc. etc. not to mention, but because he chose to only have clay as a liner, this pond will likely leak for many decades to come, and will virtually always be brown and muddy when it has water. I've seen this sort of denial before, especially when it comes to pond owners for some reason 🤔

Glad you were able to find an honest and good excavation company. It’s hard to find someone nowadays who won’t try and rip you off. Also, the competence to know what needs to be done and how to do it efficiently. I would imagine having the spoils from the excavation stay on site, saved quite a bit in fuel expenses for him. Nice project repair, and hopefully you’ll see the fruits of your labor by winter.

Easy way to start a siphon, pump the siphon line full, from the bottom, until water comes out the high (inlet) end. Air will naturally be pushed out. Close your outlet valve at the pond. Remove the pump, open the outlet valve and watch the water gush out. I filled my siphon line like this to drain my above ground pool cover for over 20 years. Works great. Time how long it takes to fill the line and you won't have to keep watch on the inlet. If you pump the water in from the bottom slowly you won't have to remove the inlet filter and the reverse flow will clean out the inlet screen.

Get ready for a beautiful lake! Your honesty is so refreshing. You put in the research and work and the lake will pay you back immensely. In 2002, in Westmoreland. County I put in a 20/x 40 in ground pool. When all was said and done it was $33,000. Today the same pool would cost almost $100,00. How do I know? My friend, who wanted a 15x30 was quoted, as you said, $85,00. PLUS the upkeep every year. Openings and closings $600 p/y, chemicals, geez chlorine has tripled, what in 2020 was $150 is now $350. Heater maintenance, pump maintence, solar cover.... The people who critize are jealous couch potatoes who have no ambition, only envy. Congrats on your lake buddy!

I think the problems have been licked. The only possible place to leak now is the puddle in the bottom depending on where the water from the puddle came from. If it is ground water that seeped up from the bottom, once there is a larger amount of water in the pond, the pond water could take the path of the seep and attempt to seek the level of the ground water. At least if that happens the area is small and it could be sealed without having to drain the pond. Also with all the clay in the pond now, natural silting will shift some of the clay into the puddle area and eventually stop any possible leak.

I put in a 1/2 acre pond in early 2021. My cost were roughly 20k for the liner, and i financed a John Deere series 3 tractor with a loader, box scraper, couple other attachments for 36k. The liner was more challenging due to the odd shape and I’m still making payments to JD. Finished the edges with an overpayment and dirt, so it looks natural ish. Overpayment was another about 3k. I did the majority of the prep work and had helpers on liner day.

It’s getting to the point where if someone can sell you the equipment but give you in-depth tutorial on how to build it might be cheaper to buy it used and then resell after you have finished the project. I am attempting a 3 stage pond where I’m testing each stage before I commit to making it bigger it might take a lot longer, but that’s fine if I’m enjoying it along the way. Plus there was huge weed problem I had to deal with there so the ground was always going to be teared up anyway. Thank you for sharing the hard lessons.

WHat a fantastic idea, I have been having trouble keeping my pond filled over the summer. I have a creek running nearby and was just ready to start digging a ditch to connect, but this seems like a better plan. I cant wait to give it a try. I was surprised by the small "puddle" of water you are filling from, but it looks like it is working well. I considered using swails (pond is at the base of a hill), but couldn't find anyone to help with this that actually knows how to cut in a swail. I am still considering this as I think it is still the best option, but for some reason harder to do.

Can you have crawfish in your supply stream and create a screen type barrier or pool before a waterfall that would keep them from migrating further into the pond. I did a bit of research and saw that some people do put crawfish in their pond. But, the potential leaks that they could create is not worth the gamble for Adam. So review the pros and cons… good luck

I hope it works out but I think you should have kept that sheep foot roller for a few days and really compacted that clay. You should have been able to compact it enough where the feet walk out of the clay and leave very small indentions. From the waffle look of it I would say its not compacted very well at all.
