I will begin by saying I am British, and have no dog in the fight. However, we hear a lot about the "Right to bear arms" from out American cousins, but very little about the "well regulated militia". In the UK where gun ownership is very regulated, there were 30 homicides by gun. In the USA over the same period there were 19,384. a figure 646 times bigger. For the UK to have the same homicide numbers, we would need a population of 44.06 BILLION. Surely something can be done about these lost thousands. You don't have a militia, you have wholesale slaughter. I expect the Democrats will be wrong on their schemes, as will the Republicans. You need someone with a brain to come up with something novel to end this disaster.

A little context on our 2nd Amendment: George Mason was the primary writers of the 2nd amendment. The "militia" is everyone, as George Mason himself said "I ask sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people except for a few public officials." The notion that the right to keep and bear arms is not an individual right but only applies to a "militia" is a 20th century notion, it was never a question before that. It has also been refuted by our Supreme Court which has ruled that the 2nd Amendment indeed gives an individual right. As I have noted, the primary writer of the amendment clearly stated that militia is "the whole people", therefore it is an individual right to keep and bear arms.

As stated in the description, the elected officials in federal and state government are out of touch with their constituents. At this point, no matter which political affiliation, whatever they say is meaningless. If a perpetrator commits a crime with a firearm he/she should get 10 years at least. If that same perpetrator gets into trouble with a firearm again he/she should get life in prison. then we need to take a good long look at requiring at least one armed law enforcement officer at every public school. This needs to be a person who is NOT authorized to make arrests but simply has the authority to protect the school from attacks. This will cost taxpayer money but may be worth it.

Maybe have checkpoints, high exterior stone walls and underground trap doors in every room with a metal door. If we can’t stop the guns we can at least give kids and staff a safe environment. We gave 40 billion to another country. Our kids are at least worth that, right?
