We've been patiently waiting for the right time to start our onion seeds in the greenhouse, and now the time is finally here! We'll be starting three different short-day onion varieties that performed really well in our backyard garden last year -- Timon, DP Sweet, and Chianti.
We'll share our top 10 onion growing tips so that you can grow big onions in your backyard garden. While some of the details of these onion growing tips are regional, most of these tips should apply to anyone in the country -- regardless of your growing zone.

I live in northern Indiana (zone 6a) near Lake Michigan. I plant my onions about 6 weeks before the average last frost. In other words, the last frost is around May 10 so I plant my onions during the last week of March. If there is going to be a late hard frost, then I will deep mulch with straw. I generally get starts from Dixondale Farms in Texas. I fertilized my onion plot with a balanced fertilizer about 1 month before I plant. I usually get them in the ground in a day or two after they arrive in the mail. After planting I fertilize every two weeks with a liquid nitrogen fertilizer (15-0-0) until about the end of May, beginning of June. I harvest during July.

I live in Oklahoma. We can grow intermediate day onions or short day onions where I am located. I like to plant short day onion seeds in mid September and plant them out by mid November. The intermediate day onion seeds are started in January and then planted outside in mid to late February with our potatoes. I like to use a row cover if temperatures dip down below 40 degrees for the intermediate day onions so don't bolt as easy. We can get a staggered harvest of onions this way. I hope that helps. The Long day onions do not bulb up bigger than a quarter because our day length is not long enough here.

NorCal 9b. I grow both intermediate and long day successfully here. Our winters are warm, I am determined to find the sweet spot to grow short day onion. Keeping moisture on the roots, fertilizing and not cutting off the green tops just before or during bulbing are key. The bulb uses those green tops to fuel bulbing when ideal day lengths are reached. Travis, I watched a video of Florida and he said he liked growing wala wala onions and they were huge,bigger than softballs.i know that's a onion the grow in the north west or Washington state where they are popular. I tried it and they were really sweet and good size.most of them were baseball size and a few were softball size.im not telling you that your information is wrong I'm saying gardening is alot of expiramenting.sometimes you learn alot that way.i know you experiment alot too.i enjoy watching your videos and just almost you are always right.by the way I live in the Houston texas area.great job.

I dont have a greenhouse. Last year i started my onions inside but this year i put a piece of plexiglass on a picnic table and started my onions under it. So far its working good keeping the hard rain off them

That’s exactly what I needed to know. We’re in pretty much the same climate so getting my onions in the garden in November should be perfect. I wonder how many I can fit in a raised bed. I might end up building a new bed just so I can fit a shitload of onions. If there’s one veggie I use more than any other, it’s onions lol

I like to start my Onions from seed for 2 reasons. I can get the variety I want and start them for when I need them instead of when the store has them; and I don't have to buy a bunch of any one type of onion. I have a smaller garden made with raised beds (240 sq foot total between 4 beds). So I don't need of 50 plants of each variety I want to grow. Plus there is a cost savings of course. Once you buy good equipment like Proptek or Garland trays, they last forever so your only investment recurring is seeds and starting mix (ProMix-BX, a bale lasts me years). One thing I noticed this year is recently we found onions already growing in the garden beds where we had them last season. We pulled the onion bulbs this spring/summer when it was time, but apparently during the Georgia heat of summer, there were some roots that went dormant and once it started cooling back down, started to grow again. They are mixed in with my Dixie Butter Peas. They are probably about a month along now (zone 8A). Never seen that before. When the cold kills the butter peas I guess I just cut them off at the ground and leave the onions to see if they make it like normal. The variety is the good ole Yellow Granex Hybrid.

Chicago area, zone 5b. Avg last frost date of May 15th Latitude 42 N. Right on the north end of the intermediate day onion but well within the long day onion zones. I will start the onion seeds between Dec 20 and Jan 1. Transplant into the ground March 15 to 30 depending on the weather. I look for the avg low temps to be around 30 (or higher) Some people question that I'm starting the seeds too early but I want a larger transplant to go into the ground. Helps them survive the cold nights. When I used to get starts from Dixondale, the good ones were always on the larger side, so that's another reason to have a bigger transplant. My Aug 5th video "Wrapping up a great onion season" shows the results which speak for themselves. Candy is my favorite variety. I use the full size Proptek trays. 😀

I planted Vidalia sweet onions this. After watching this video, I stopped fertilizing them after the bulbs started forming as you stated in tip #8. I only got quarter sized onions this year. Maybe I stopped fertilizing to early or too late.

We live in north western Pennsylvania, a few years back we were able to grow peanuts in our garden. They did pretty good. And yes, we boiled ‘em. Bolt-peanuts is what we called them in Florida where we became addicted to them . I’ll help you eat that pot! Cajun style!

I'm in ohio 5b... I planted by onions the beginning on March and they did fantastic thus far!.... however I experimented this last winter (we had a fairly mild winter for ohio) and put a few tiny onion starts in the ground about the time I planted my garlic and surprisingly they over wintered fantastically! I don't know how much bulbing they will do (they were a smaller variety to start with) but they are putting off scapes but I don't think I want the seeds all over my garden lol. But it was a great experiment!

I would be willing to bet that this is the most popular video you've made to date. After people saw those monster onions you grew, they wanted to be able to grow some just as big. I've followed your advice to the tee but my onions never got as big as yours. I realized my problem was that the place I was growing the onions weren't getting much sun through the important vegetative growth. I moved all my raised beds around, and let me tell you that was no little undertaking. I have my preplant fertilizer down and my starts are about three inches high. I can hardly wait to put them in around the middle of October. I also incorporated chicken manure from the hen house into one of the beds and am experimenting with the alfalfa pellets and another fertilizer for preplant. I have so little space for all I want to do, I'm thinking I need one more bed and I'm about to order it now.

Obviously I'm going back and watching some of your earlier videos. If I'm going to use a lot of chicken manure in my compost should I put it in the compost now so it won't be to hot? You are my go to expert on growing onions. I'll be growing mine out in raised beds and planting them out around the middle of November. I got some decent sized onions this year but none of them were as big as yours. I don't even have to have the monsters you pulled out of the ground but id like to have them bigger than a golf ball. To be very honest I did get some bigger than a golf ball but not by very much. With the way things are going if we want to eat it, we might better grow it. I priced some vadallia sweet onions in the Piggly wiggly a few days ago and on sale they were ridiculous. I don't need to buy onions, I was just curious. Thankfully I think we are set for onions until next harvest barring they don't go bad. I wove mine this year and hung them up in the utility room where it stays nice and cool, plus I'll be able to check for a bad one when I do laundry. That gives a really nice transplant in late March when I like to get them in the ground. We're in the southern intermediate day range depending on who's map you look at but I know we're WAY too cold to overwinter a short day onion here.

You can make dibbling a lot quicker by stacking a tray onto the pre-moistened soil and gently pressing down all over then just lift the tray. Boom, all cells are dibbed down pretty uniformly and stupid fast.

We're in zone 8b. If you regularly get in the low 20s or below during the winter, you'll probably want to wait until spring to plant. But if you rarely get that cold, you can plant in November like we do and overwinter them.

How much Agri Thrive do you typically keep in your bucket? I just started using this same system but I don't want to kill everything.

I'll usually just put a couple glugs in there. But I put more than a few glugs recently. I don't usually take the time to measure it when using it for that siphoning system.

I was thinking about trying the same thing. Agrothrive says 2oz per gallon for seedlings (double that is a normal application). Assuming your siphon system is 1:16, that would mean you'd need about a gallon of agrothrive for a 5 gallon bucket (then fill the rest with plain water). A couple of glugs sounds like way less than a gallon though, so I assume since you apply with every watering you intentionally stay on the low side. Does that sound right?

You can probably get by with putting transplants in the ground in November -- that's assuming you rarely see temps in the lows 20s for long periods of time.

Hi Travis, I have a few questions, please. Would onions and celery be ok to plant in the same bed? I have a huge pot that I was just getting ready to plant my strawberries in and noticed ants In the soil, do you think it’s ok to spray for the ants and wait a few days then plant the strawberries? I don't see why you couldn't plant onions and celery in the same bed. I don't think you need to worry about waiting to plant after spraying the ants, considering the fact that it's gonna be a while before the strawberries are ready.

I’ve read that snap peas and onions shouldn’t be grown next to each other. It will stunt the peas. Is this true? I have an 8 x 4 steel bed. Can I split it in half with onions on one side and peas on the other?

I live in NE Georgia zone 8a, all my onions rotted at the top this year. They did this right after I harvested them, they didn’t dry they rotted. What do you think I did wrong? No weeds, harvested them 4 months after planting them and tops just started to fall over. Go Dawgs!!

Maybe not enough air flow around them after harvest to dry out the vegetation. 1 thing I learned from experience is don't set onions on a metal plate or nonporous surface after harvest. If it doesn't breathe and doesn't absorb moisture, it will promote rot. Some kind of mesh or grated surface is best. .......and don't let them get rained on. 😀

I planted my onions in mid October last year from my own seedlings. I'm pretty sure that was way too early. They survived the winter and that epic freeze we got here in Texas (8b) in March. It dropped below 20F for a few days and killed a lot other of plants that had hopes and dreams for Spring. Every one of them bolted and produced pretty much nothing. This year I'm waiting until November to spin the Texas gardening wheel of fortune. If that fails I'll order some starts from Dixondale farms and plant them sometime in January. I've been gardening since the early 1970s (earlier than that as a kid in my parent's garden!) and have never once planted an onion seed! 🤷‍♀️🤣 how weird is that? All I've ever known is planting sets. Grew up and lived most my life in the Virginia mountains (zone 6a) moved to central Florida in 2015 and found out you can garden year round down here. Anyway everyone down here talks, "onion seeds" not "onion sets" so I'm wondering why. Advantage or disadvantage between the two other than variety availability down here?

I've had my tops get so tall that they bend, but it's never stopped the bulbing process. They should continue to grow. I wouldn't think that winds bending the tops would do anything different than trimming the tops like some folks do.

I direct sowed my onion seeds in my raised bed and they came up, only about 3 inches high. Does that mean they will bolt early? I have more seeds and can sew some in a pot per your suggestion. I got a little impatient to plant my winter veggies and according to the weather folks we are going to be very hot next week, so I might have to replant the whole garden.

Shade cloth time..hopefully u will pull them thru..i took a chance too..but plant starts in batches..my second group got eaten by something..so the third batch is coming on and ill start fourth in about 2 weeks. I got a lot of old old seed so im trying to use them up..like an entire package of.chives only had two come up and i was happy i got 2...lol. parsley has been about the same...i mostly.grown it for butterflies...and would love a whole patch for them

They are. But there's not a variety called "Vidalia." They grow many different varieties in Vidalia, GA.

We usually start onion seeds in late September. You'll want to make sure you plant "short-day" onions. And the mix we use is called "ProMix BX."

Okay, Im a teeny bit confused. You say in your tips to plant them in Nov. but you're planting seeds now. So you mean to plant onion plants, not onion seeds in November? Im in Florida so Im thinking if thats the case, I need to get seeds planted pronto. Am I right?

We'll transplant them in November. We start the seeds in the greenhouse now and we'll have viable onion plants that are ready for the ground in November. So yes, you would need to get seeds soon.

Onions are one thing I dont seem to be able to start from seeds. Wish I could, It and Cabbage are the only things I grow I still need to buy plants or starts

Onions take a little more patience than something like cabbage or tomato seedlings. They're a little fragile at first, but they get going eventually.

CANADIANS call that moving dirt part of an onions life ... they call it spooning time...they actually move the soil away with a spoon!!..but way before the onion does it...i seem to remember you saying that doesnt help bulbing..seems to work for them...doesnt make any difference to me..what.does help is to not plant too deep...i was raised being told just bury the roots of onions....but i rarely get big ass onions...so what do I know...REALLY U WOULD THINK PUSHING 80 WITH AT LEAST 60 YEARS OF FAILURES WOULD OF TAUGHT ME SOMETHING...LOL I got my first group of broccoli and cauliflower in and THEY'RE pretty big now. My second batch got TOTALLY eaten by something..think its the snails but couldnt/didnt see any culprit at all. But on my third batch I happened to notice tiny holes on the big plants ..i got a bumper crop of worms...so i pulled out bt...Then noticed a bumper crop of mealy bugs...IT LOOKED LIKE IT.SNOWED ....and now i got aphids out the kazoo..i mean wtf..the pecan trees are dripping honey pooh like HUGE rain drops...EVERY THING IS STICKY.....never seen it like this...EVEN THE SIDEWALKS AND of course the CARS...AND I MEAN EVERYTHING. EVERYPLACE....the plants under the trees are like sticky traps and covered in teeny tiny white specks of both baby white flies and mealy bugs AND OTHER THINGS...SO the drought we are still in...all those august rains literally split and missed us so we got zero rain when everyone else got inches....now its the plague of every single bad bug on earth. OH THE ROLLY.POLLIES ARE THICK AS HELL..HONESTLY...IT WORSENTHANNWHEN U STOP USING PESTICIDES..U KNOW THE.SEVEN YEARS WHERE THE BAD BUGS RULE..THEN NATURE.TAKES OVER??? AND FIRST TIME I EVER SEEN EAR WIGS!!! ONLY THE SNAILS SEEM TO BE HIDING..but i have evidence they have done damage. We usually have lady bugs ect out the kazoo but no one has.seen one this year...not ONE....we usually have so many we would spend an hour in the evening taking them back outside!!! Pretty challenging growing year here..i hate to say it cause i might curse myself but next year can not be as bad...knocking on Wood!!! I GUESS ILL START SOME OLD SPINACH SEEDS AND SEE IF THEY TAKE...I GOT A NEW.VARIETY OF HUGE LEAVE SPINACH I WILL START IN 2 WEEKS. I HOPE TO DEVOTE AN ENTIRE BED TO SPINACH THIS YEAR ..I GOT THE SWISS CHARD PLOT STARTS UP AND GONNA BUMP THEM UP TO BIGGER POTS THIS WEEK..I ALSO JUST STARTED MY LETTUCE....today they finally.broke surface. I HATE RADISHES BUT HUBBY LOVES THE TASTE OF THOSE GROWN IN THE HEAT SO I HAD BEST START SOME.MORE . All while.trying to remake make a pvc.drip system and remake my cattle panel .green house and add three new beds and take care of sick dog..and when your pushing 80nu move at the speed of a.glacier....who takes naps!

The spooning process might be beneficial if you have hard soils. But I don't think it's worth the effort in softer, sandy soils.

What i always forget is its the day u set them out not start them..its gotten so indont read the packet info Im 8b and started mine about 3 weeks ago..they are about 2 inches tall now..they should be ready to set out end of october first weeks of november..

I could be wrong on this, but I believe late winter would be best for those intermediate-day transplants. Plant the seeds about 6 weeks before you intend to transplant them.

Hybrid plants, it has been found, have a significant difference in nutritional value. Hybrids do not contain the same level of nutrition as the non-hybrid varieties.

You could, but you'd probably need to thin them to one plant every 6-8" or so. I've never tried that method, but I have heard of folks doing it.

One thing I have noticed after watching you for several years is that even though I am in 8b like you are, our weather is not the same. I think the extremes here are higher and lower than yours, at least that's the way it has seemed for the last few years. Do you get freezes every year and what are the lowest temps you see when a norther blows through? How many freezes do you get on average? I apologize for commenting twice, but onions are my nemesis in gardening and I need help. 🧅

We get some pretty crazy swings during winter here. It could be 40 degrees in the morning and close to 80 degrees by that afternoon. Our cold snaps usually only last a few days and we rarely get below 25. Not sure exactly how many freezes we get on average, but I'd guess it was around 10-15 per winter. Some years we're wearing shorts on Christmas Day, sometimes we're bundled up.
