I’m not sure why he would say “after 3 Defenders “? They bought the first one and the engine light came on . Agreed not good . LR did replace the vehicle with an upgraded model . The second vehicle was fine but a mechanic at the LR dealership destroyed the wiring harness while attempting to install a winch . I would not say that was a Defender fail ? And now they are on there third vehicle and it is performing perfectly. I keep hearing on this and other videos the number “3’” . To be fair I think they are technically on there 2nd Defender . The design of the Jeep, and all similar vehicles, is specifically tailored to offroading, no matter what people say. Observe, the primary design purpose of a pickup truck is work: hauling and carrying. As their usage became more popular the manufacturers had to accommodate and adapt the vehicles to secondary and tertiary capabilities: hauling (more) passengers and towing. While this TFL test is a wonderful test designed primarily around rock crawling, it is neither the only version of offroading and it is scewed in bias of the Jeep. If you feel like levelling the playing field take your Jeep on a real Baja fast run with the Raptor and then average out the overall performance. Do this with other "tests" for a more direct vehicle-to-vehicle comparison by: load each vehicle up with passengers max, payload, etc. ... then you'll have more direct comparisons. Any test that primarily revolves around rock crawling is naturally scewed to the advantage of the Jeep ... that is not unbiased nor thorough testing. While the Jeep may generally have a rock crawling advantage, with respect to tall, wide, broad people they are terribly uncomfortable. Expand your tests and you're money TFL ...

The Toyota was too heavily modified to even be considered. I agree with Andre and Tommy: a Rubicon, be it Wrangler or Gladiator, is simply the best off-roader on the market. The TRX is too big, too powerful, too heavy, and obviously too expensive. The Raptor is better than the former, being lighter and with better off-road tech and equipment, but it is very wide and calls for steep prices. The Defenders demand respect, but reliability is iffy, and as soon as you climb up the specs trims and options, you can quickly hit $80+ The Gladiator it is. 😎👍 p.s. ....and Iveco Daily 4x4 would have been a nice addition, those things are popular in Australia, true off-road monsters! 😁

That's a tough call. After all, you're testing two desert runners and one rock crawler on a rock crawling course. That being said, they all passed with flying colors. None of them had to concede an obstacle. At that point, they're equal, only leaving ground clearance. To which the TRX won seeing as, with the exception of the "Butt Scratcher" where it was a tie with the Raptor, it had the least clearance issues. And, yes I'd love to see a comparison with the two desert runners doing what they were designed to do.
@MarkTodd333 жыл бұрын
These trucks were make for high speed desert running not rock crawling. If you try and corner at high speed with the TRX you will roll the truck. It has massive understeer that everyone avoids talking about. To me that's the most important factor about the Raptor. It can handle like a sports car and is stable in corners at high speed. New Raptor with 37's with be unstoppable.

Love this channel but this was all about entry and departure angles... that’s maybe 10% of this debate. Kinda let down..

The best off roader in that test was clearly the Defender. If scraping wasn't the benchmark of success then the Gladiator appeared to have performed the best... Take the stock Defender on the Rubicon trail and I think you'd have a different outcome. I would get the Gladiator... That's my take...

Great video TFL. I agree with Roman that the Discovery wins because of no scrapes and the everyday comfort that it offers, but like Tommy said, if the reliability is counted, you have to eliminate it. If I had one to buy, it would be the FJ. Looks cool, doesn't exist anymore and the only vehicle there that the value will go up. FJ for the win!

The more I drove other offroad vehicles, the more I understand how good Jeeps are. The suspension is just so much better than most road cars. And even I really love big horsepower, I have to say gearing is more important unless you are only doing high-speed stuffs.

Still think the Defender was too notch. Roman summed it up brilliantly. For me the real question is Defender vs Wrangler. Out of the box and daily drive the Defender is awesome. If you are into rock crawling then I do believe the Wrangler is king. The Raptor and Trx will rule the desert for Baja runs. That’s what they are made for. The 4 runner is mister reliable but adding 15K or more if you want to modify it as a daily drive with those tyres not sure 🤔. At the end of the day it depends on two things: budget and needs. I’m glad I got the Defender suits my needs to a tea.

Well put. The Wrangler definitely has the most out-of-the-box capability in terms of simply getting through something the others can't, however add in other variables to suite your individual needs and the others can shine. Want to go fast in the desert instead of over technical trails? TRX or Raptor. Want to haul or tow more? Or have good moderate off-road ability and still have a high level of on-road comfort? Defender comes to the front. Care only about maximum reliability over anything else? Pick a Toyota.

Might not be a Baja Desert run but fun to see the trucks out there on the trails.

To be fair with the Raptor, it was taking a much difficult line at the frame bender than the TRX and Jeep

Ah man I so would pick the Raptor over all of them. Yea it’s bigger than most but all the spaces are more usable and I won’t be hunting for a gas station very mile I drive!!! Very comfortable as a daily and can used for work, home, and play all in 1 truck! Love the commentary by Tommy about it!lol The Raptor has leading off-road technology for all terrain scenarios. It can score medium in rock crawling but beat or match the one of all those vehicles in Baja terrain. Like Roman said “It’s the scalpel”. Great video and commentary guys!! Keep up the good work!!! I’d buy that Raptor even if it has Moab love marks on it!!!lol
