This was a fantastic series. I just had my BX23S delivered three days ago, You could say I am/was middle of the fence on which one to purchase. Your comment in the first episode was what made my decision, even though I had not watched this series. The "salesman" (Messick's Dealer) made my decision to go with the Kubota. I had actually decided on the JD, but I went to two different local dealers in my area and both dealer salesnmen seemed to not care whether I bought or not. I ask a lot of questions, especially when I have a no knowledge of a product. My dad had a JD (midsize) when I grew up so I know what a backhoe is about. However, for me, purchasing the backhoe was probably 50% want than need, The Kubota salesman was enthusiastic from the get go. He answered my questions very similar to your series without bias on the practicality of what I was to purchase and comparison to the JD. I spent about 14 months back and forth with the Kubota dealer before purchasing, Now, your series would not have made a difference in my decision product wise, but it did reenforce my confidence in my decision for purchasing the Kubota in that choosing either one was a good choice.

I hadn't even considered John Deere based on 'talk' I've heard in the past, but after watching your videos, I'm visiting my local JD dealer tomorrow. Looking at the 1025R TLB or the 2025R TLB. Thank you for an actual review worth watching. Honestly, you should continue this line of "work" and bring real tests and results to the consumers. Trying to decipher dealer literature is quite difficult. Your real world approach is both refreshing and trustworthy. I haven't been to John Deere yet but both new holland and kubota matched prices and I betcha Deere will match in this class as well. So do your research and let the dealers compete for you business. Right now as long as deere doesn't do something stupid like say we cant match other companies when i talk to them next week, they will get my money.

Although I don’t know you personally, I feel like I do, as you are genuine folks and well-grounded in your faith. And, your testimony to that in each episode is reflective of your values. You folks did a superb job on the comparison. My first sub-compact was a Kubota B6100 HST which served me well for over 17 years, and continues to serve the folks I sold it to. I have since had a Deere 4610 for over 16 years and recently to a 4052R. All of them served well with no major issues at all. As you clearly pointed out, they are both excellent machines and could serve anyone well based on personal preferences. I share in your dismay over those who choose to judge your fairness harshly. Awesome series Tim! Fair & honest review of each tractor. I own a 1025r & my neighbor has a BX. I can tell you they are both excellent tractors. We both use the tractors to mow, landscape, and clear snow in the winter, we both love our tractors & know we can depend on them. I think these size tractors are just the right size, not too big, and not too small for lots of tasks. I’m certain that anyone who purchases either one of these tractors will really enjoy having it for many years. Just thought I would also mention winter snow removal, and the way my neighbor & I take care of that. On his Bx, he uses the loader and a rear blade, that works well. I use a plow same as the one Tim has with the edge protector & the hard rubber 6” wings on the sides. While I’m at it here's some things on my wish list😊 Mauser Cab, Bagger, Sweeper, Forks, LED light kit, & a toothbar. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for Christmas but my wife would disagree. Thanks for reading all this, my advise to anyone out there looking for a subcompact tractor is simply: Go get one! I know it’s $15K (+) but you only live once, you will be glad you got it every single time you go outside & start it up😊

This is by far the most objective, unbiased comparison I've ever seen online in the Orange/Green wars. Ultimately, it comes down to this: Despite what many people want to hear, one is not "great" while the other is "terrible." Both are really well-matched, capable machines, and I feel that IF these tractors are appropriate for the type of work that you need to do, then a buyer would be very happy with either choice. Thanks for doing a great job on the comparisons of these two heavyweights. Way too much emphasis is placed on the “plastic tractor hood” I for one am glad I went green. I have bounced numerous chunks of firewood off the hood of my 1025R and NO DENTS to repair. No cracks either. Love the twin touch pedals, being in the forklift industry the location is the same as the monotrol pedal. Treadle pedals are just not that natural. My brother has orange and loves it. Good for him. He has very different requirements for his Kubota as do I for my 1025R. Most of the comparison videos I have seen try to push potential Byers to one brand or another. People just need to ask themselves why are they buying a SCUT to begin with? Does this tractor or that one fit my needs better? This series will become *the* benchmark KZbin videos for those who need to know the real differences between these two models. I have had my 1025R TLB for about a month now, and I use whatever capability it delivers. I'm building a 60 foot retaining wall into a hillside that had lots of stumps from shrubs and small tress. I'm pretty sure I could do what I need with either tractor, but I sure to appreciate whatever strength the 1025R delivers. Nothing you have said turned me off from the Kubota, but if I went that way, I would likely jump up to the B series. It would be great if someone could help you move some dirt at your church with a Kubota B series, since many people who watch these videos and see the BX to be a bit weaker will wonder if the B would meet their needs. Great job. I own a BX23S for starters. Having said that I thoroughly enjoyed the series and felt you kept an open mind through out. It’s important information that did not exist when I purchased and would have appreciated having. @@eddiepit First I would say most people have some preference for the place they live. Its success usually means their success in broad terms. National pride. I would also say everyone wants good quality, and many of the eastern countries don't reliably produce it. So I wouldn't read it as bias against the the east in general, but against bad quality. Japan used to be the country producing the poor quality, and they quickly transitioned to one known for high quality. Korea is making their transition pretty quickly too. The US did the same in the 1800s. India and China are hit and miss currently, but due to the large numbers of people, will probably take 40years to make that same transition.

What you have done is incredibly useful for so many people. We can all watch biased reviews and try to decipher reality or spend 10 minutes driving around the yard at the dealer, but you really don’t know what you got into until the first time it gets put to work. You have put the information out in a way that truly shows the strengths to either machine. As an engineer there is a ton of different ways to do load/strength tests, I may have done some differently, but don’t let the haters get you down, you did excellent job showing what both machines are capable of! Heavy equipment mechanic here. Yanmar makes the simplest, easiest and arguably the most reliable small Diesel engines on earth, they really are idiot proof. Any air cooled deutz is also extremely reliable.

I have struggled and spent more time than I’ve wanted to, going back and forth on these two brands. I’ve been using “gray” market tractors that my grandfather wanted to sell such as Yanmar and Mitsubishi. They are a pain in the you know what due to accessibility getting on and off, manual transmissions, no live power, etc. You get what you pay for. Your videos have been fantastic. I cannot stress how helpful you and your family have been comparing the two. I was really vague as to how they worked and how their mowers for instance hooked up. Not only were these videos great for comparison, they were in essence, great training videos which I think both manufacturers owe you for that! DO NOT pay any attention to any of the hateful comments. I’d like to challenge those haters to step up and do what you have done better! I felt you have really gone above and beyond trying to show why and how these machines have their good and bad limitations. I agree on your decision using these two brands. I live in an area that have all kinds of brand dealerships. JD, Kubota, Massey, Kioti, New Holland, Mahindra, etc. I test drove a New Holland tractor (don’t remember the size number but it was close to the 25 hp range), and felt it was cheaply made. You all have done a great service in showing what to look for in all compact tractors! Thank you so much for putting these videos together! You made them fun to watch and your family is awesome! Your a guy I could hang out and talk tractors all day with! Hope to see more videos and ignore the haters and BS comments. Some people are terrible human beings and love to bring others down!

Something I especially like regarding the gas gage on the JD is that you are able to read it while filling your fuel and it does it without needing the ignition on. It's especially helpful since using a fuel funnel blocks the way of seeing the fuel rising up. It's right there in full view while filling. Simple yet brilliant.

Please become the Consumer Reports of tractors! Ignore the haters, they are always going to be out there and they are never going to be objective anyhow. This series was very informative to me as a first time tractor buyer. You've shown what both tractors are about and their capabilities and features. Thanks Tim & Christy! One more comment from a BX owner with a cab. Having the radiator screen in front of the driver is an advantage in the summer for both cooling & easy clean off while you're driving but in the winter it tends to suck warm are out of the cab. Kubota does have a plastic cover that is held on with velcro over the screen & you have to remove some plastic shields inside so it can suck air in from under the tractor. Extra work & time. No solution is perfect in every situation.

Hey Tim, Tim here in SF Bay Area. I think you did a great job on this series and accomplished what you had set out to do. I currently own a Kubota L2501 I bought new in 2018. I used to own a JD 4320 compact that I bought new when they came out in 2005. That unit was completely built in a new JD plant in the USA. I think it was Georgia. Turbo charged 4 cyl 48HP JD motor. Had to sell it in 2007 in order to retire from AT&T. All I have left are some pics. Was pricey, but a great unit. The way things turned out, I coulda' kept it, but it is what it is. I think your videos are about as close to a professional production that you can get doing it yourself. Cheers.

I have a Kubota L4701, I did not really need a tractor that large but the price between what would have been large enough for my needs pushed me to a larger tractor mostly because I’ve met a lot of guys who wished for larger machines at some point but not really anyone wanting to go smaller, but I am looking at a smaller BX model for just mowing applications only, I am looking at the Deere’s as well ( 700 series) but I’m hearing that they have aluminum axles worries me. Is this actually true??, plus I’m not a big fan of all the plastic either.

John Deere ATTN:: Please position the grease "zirks"(?) in an easily accessible area in the JD E170 you have to reach behind things and position the grease connection in ways that you end up scraping your hands up. This can be easily fixed by just putting them in a better area this is especially true on the mower deck.

What did you prefer on the kioti over the Deere or Kubota. I attempted to look at the kioti but the local dealer influenced me to not buy from him. We have a kioti compact at work and the ergonomics are horrible (seat is WAY too close to the steering wheel, the detents in the transmission lack a positive stopping point so you really have to pay attention to get it in reverse/forward/neutral, for it's size the power seems to be lacking).

I run kubota or buy with kubota engines because it fits me. In my area which I work is the north half of my state and all of the dealers are huge on support just the same as Deere. The biggest difference is warranty. I work closely with several other contractors and my b2320 and 3350 cab has worked alongside of 1023r and 3032r for hundreds of hours and each has its advantage. I dont bash deere other than their warranty especially on hydraulic. Both the 3032r have had loader valve problems at 340 hours at 3 years and the other less than 200hrs at 2.5 years and was only covered 2 of the 5 year warranty. That being said I often get off of my orange and get on green because they are so closely similar on capability. I think what matters most is the dealer and their support and what fits you best. Numbers on paper can not compare to real world "pushing the limits" like we all do with them. It's like trying to mow with a compact tractor vs a kutkwick or ventrac on a hill. I think you two really went out of your way to show both the best points of both machine and have to applaud yall because you fought being bias as long time deere owners as best you could.

Yep. I agree totally. I went Kubota because the Deere dealer in my area is akin to a crack head. The yard is a wreck. The tractors are sat out and rusting. The sales building is a leaning shed looking structure. No one around. The Kubota dealer is a brand new steel building. Clean yard. Full of clean tractors. People going this way and that. People run to greet you with a smile. The employees look happy and stop to talk to you. That's why I bought my Kubota. Buying at the Deere dealer just up the road would have been a nightmare to deal with. You can just tell. Dealer support is why I bought my Kubota.

This was one of the best reviews I have seen of the two tractors. You really weren't trying to sell use one brand or the other. There was one thing you touched on that would help better understand the sentiment that Kubota fans like the fact that Kubota makes the engine. The fact is if Yanmar goes out of business it could become hard for you to potentially source parts for the engine in the John Deere. With the Kubota the entire company would have to go out of business to expect not to get parts. Really splitting hairs in my opinion if Yanmar goes out of business there might be bigger issues in the works. The thing that you didn't touch on or I didn't see was what, I though was a bit of a disservice, is that with Kubota it almost always comes with a skid steer front attachment. Whether that is a good or bad in peoples opinion. Is another issue of you potentially losing out on some lift capacity due to weight versus the universality of attachments for the front.

We explain fully the weight disadvantage of SSQA, as well as the irrelevance of the Compatibility with existing (HUGE/HEAVY/HYDRAULIC POWERED) skid steer attachments. Objectively, JDQA makes much more sense than SSQA for subcompact tractors. ...on larger tractors, SSQA begins to be more attractive. For example, we have SSQA on our 5075e.

In the mid and late 1990s I worked at a John Deere dealer and one year I got to go for a week long John Deere dealer seminar and we visited assembly plants in Moline, IL and Horicon, WI. Way back then, the compact utility tractors (655/670 through the 955 hydro and 1070 gear drive) were built at the Horicon, WI plant along with all the lawn tractors. Also, several people would bring their Yanmar tractors in for us to service because the John Deere "was just a Yanmar". However, the ONLY parts from the Deere that would fit the Yanmars was the fuel and oil filters. The rest of the tractor was not the same, and parts were not interchangeable when you left the engine. Both of the tractors you reviewed are good tractors and the Kubota is very reliable. However, from my experience with the Deere line, ergonomics and hyrdraulics will win out every time. The only tractor that could beat Deere in the hydraulic department over the years was International. Back in the day, those tractors literally could lift a barn.

I think that applies to all tractors. I have a Mahindra Max 28XL and love it. I am however in the process of adding a light bar and rear work lights. The headlights with the bucket in place are less than useless.

Sealed bearings have slightly less life than greasable ones but if you don’t do maintenance greasable ones will die faster. It depends on the users maintenance habits.

FishFind3000 exactly. My last three vehicles have had no grease fittings on the drivelines. That’s been a thing for a long time. Though when it comes to replacing U-joints they are always with grease fittings.

Yea about the bearings maybe you could do a video on sealed vs greased ones. I’m old school and believe greased is better? But I’ve heard so much like the put sealed bearings in greased fittings areas ? Just to please the user or buyer? And I’ll be honest I’m looking at new mowers specifically O turn and a lot of commercial/residential mowers have non greased spindles so hopefully you can shed some light on this ok thanks I have both kubota and deer products like them both great videos thanks. It’s a shame on the haters I really liked the comparison videos.

only personal experience, but my Nissan Navara (not sure what you call it over there) has sealed driveshaft uni joints, and it's still going strong after 450,000km including plenty of harsh off-road use.

Less maintenance for the buyer is a selling point. Nobody enjoys crawling around greaZing stuff. Sealed units, at least in theory, should outlast non-sealed. Dirt doesn’t get in and grease doesn’t get out. CAVEAT.... this depends on the quality of the seals! Good quality sealed units are fantastic and worry-free.

My decision was very driven the opposite way... Kubota had the 0% when I was buying and Deere wanted me to pay interest up front and called it “no interest”. Dirty trick to get me in the door. And sadly, the price gap between the two was closer to $2,000. So I went orange. Honestly, if Deere was dollar for dollar, I probably would’ve went green. I just couldn’t justify the big price difference. I think this goes to show how important the dealer is in the buying process!

Thanks for a great comparisons. I just purchased a BX26S. A couple reason jumped out when researching. For me, money was tight. The 1025R (which was my original choice). My local dealer wanted a flat 26,000 grand. The Kubota came in at 24,304, also Kubota was offering a 500 dollar rebate on implements so I bought some pallet forks for 400 bucks. In the end, as a payment buyer 275.00 was easier than the 1025R of 335.00 with no implements. That’s why I chose orange, not to mention the Kubota dealer was really fantastic to work with. I watch a lot of your videos and appreciate how you show real world things that happen

I totally understand the reasons you have for not wanting to do more reviews like this. Unfortunately, there will always be those folks who do the "my team is better than your team" rant. Most of us do understand that your intent was simply to present the real world facts of what the two machines abilities are. And you did that truthfully. Obviously some folks just "can't handle the truth." Like you, i like my john deere, but can also admit when we like a certain feature on a different tractor. I worked with both brands or tractors,John Deere on farms and Kubota in snow removal...In my opinion Joihn Deere is tougher but more pricey and Kubota is reliable but cheaper!

I really enjoyed the series. I had a BX23S delivered a couple weeks ago and am anxious for spring to start putting it to work. (did some minor snow removal so far). I went with the Kubota mainly because I liked the smoothness of the hydraulics and sweet spot for doing multiple functions just seemed to be where I thought it should be. For my application I'm not going to be lifting anything of significant weight beyond a couple feet. Mostly moving dirt and clearing land. I did get quotes on the 1025R and they were quite a bit higher, about $3500 more than the Kubota. (the dealer also charged for delivery!) However, I think I'd be happy with either machine. I'm not using it for mowing and didn't get a deck, though I am looking at the John Deere Z545R zero-turn for when I get my land cleared, so maybe I'll have both colors in my barn soon.

when i was looking for a mower i looked at a gravely. they sales guy tried to tell me about how it was maintenance free when i asked him where the grease fittings were on the spindles.. i asked him if it lasts forever... he said no.. they need to be changed when they go out.. i then told him its not maintenance free then.. he then said "no its maintenance free" i then explained to him if i have a grease fitting and chose not to grease the fitting then it will last about the same as his.. being able to put fresh grease in it will make it last longer.. they will still need to be replaced but not nearly as often..

I've got both on everything I own and both at some time are going to fail. They are ware parts like brake shoes. I've have greaseable bronze bushings last as long or longer on the same pivot points as bearings sealed or greaseable

Tim, stumbled across this series of videos by chance, and watched it all the way through. I appreciate your honest and equal view on these tractors. I grew up around both of these brands - small Kubotas and larger green tractors. This spring, I bought my own first tractor - a 1025R, based on my previous experiences, and all the reasons you might guess based on your own videos. Keys for me were ease of deck removal, loader power, and engine performance. Although these two machines seem very even, I've personally seen the 2 series Deere and the B series Kubota hooked to an 11 foot batwing finishing mower. The mower would bog down the Kubota, while the deere would slip the clutch on the mower. Finally, my Kubota dealer and Deere dealer are right across the street from each other. Pricing and financing (zero for 60) were so close it didn't even factor into my choice. So you haven't influenced my buying choice at all, but you have confirmed that I chose the correct machine for what my priority features and capabilities were. While I could tell throughout the series you prefer the Deere, you completely covered every weakness and strength of both machines as factually as possible as near as I could tell. Thank you for the distraction and information.
