5:16 - Some people do, some don't. Those who do it's usually as a "strategy" to eat less in the main dish.😉 I'm in the "don't" camp, I only eat soup for dinner. 7:42 - If they bring you an olive oil, a vinegar bottle and table salt, it usually means that the salad is not seasoned and you have to do it yourself. 😉 12:17 - Chocolate mousse with strawberries. When you have the chance, try it. I'm sure it'll go straight to your list of Things That Go Well With Chocolate Mousse. 😄 That waiter is what we call in Portugal "um pintas". The equivalente in English would be something like "quite a character". He's more traditional than the food you ate. 😂
@millionplacesoneworld2 ай бұрын
@module79l28 What I noticed about the soups in Portugal is that they are usually just vegetables. In Latvia, we have soups more with potatoes, meat, pasta (everything that's in the fridge 😁), etc. It's like a stew. And I think this was my first soup in Portugal. You know what? It was a positive surprise 👍🇵🇹 About the oil and vinegar, you are right - it wasn't seasoned, DIY 😂 Strawberry and chocolate mousse, I know what I will order next time 😄 Robert (the waiter) made fun of me because I was speaking to the camera a lot, but he was super cool and professional also 😄 I laughed about your comment - more traditional than the food we ate 😂😂😂 Thanks!!!
@module79l282 ай бұрын
@@millionplacesoneworld - Well, potatoes are also vegetables, aren't they? 😄 Yes, the large majority of the soups you find at restaurants are almost exclusively made with veggies, the only exception being the Caldo Verde, the Canja (chicken soup) and a few ones with different types of pasta in them. The non-exclusively veggie soups are usually "special" soups, made only in some regions or for special occasions. If you want to see and/or experience what types of soups we have in Portugal, I recommend going to the Soup Congress (I'm not kidding, it's really called that) in Tomar. It's held in May at the Mouchão Park, that "island" in the middle of the river.

At 3:02 you're describing a typical old ass Portuguese from the interior, and you're 100% right, those measures sound about right, maybe less beef and more pork even. Lots of soups, and A LOT of bread. In the main cities the new generations, not so much. I probably eat 150kg of chicken every year, 2kg of pork if that much, 25 kg of fish, 25kg of beef. Much more water, far less wine, but I love people with the first type of diet, those are the true portuguese. Also, soup before the main dish is important IF IT HAS NO POTATO, because it makes you feel full but it's massive nutrients and low calories.

I loved the video...And I'm strict vegan (pure vegetarian) so I wouldn't even eat most of what you have! But the video is wonderful fun. Soup at the start of a meal is great. We've had piri piri in Portugal and - since we like spicy foods - we loved the piri piri. "Por favor" or "se faz favor" -- either is fine! Coffee makes almost anything better -- brilliant Idea to add it to the chocolate mousse. And of COURSE you have to enjoy a coffee after a meal -- and first thing in the morning, and multiple times during the day. I love the coffee in Portugal. Muito bom, meu amigo! ...You and your wife are a joy to watch as you enjoy dining. Obrigado e tchau :)

@@millionplacesoneworld Sorry ...Been busy and just saw this now! ...Since we are vegan, much of what we eat in Portugal at restaurants is at Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern or other "ethnic" restaurants that often offer dishes that are - or can be prepared - vegan. Our typical breakfast in Portugal is good strong coffee ☕, and fresh bread with olive oil. We have only visited Portugal twice so far (2-3 weeks each time, with another visit probably in Spring 2025, possibly for a longer stay), so perhaps half of our lunch and dinner meals are at restaurants. If we are doing dinner in our rented flat, that has often been bread with hummus, olive oil, and olives, with some nice vinho tinto (red wine). Lunch is often our larger meal. It IS wonderful for vegans like us that many places seem to understand veganism, and therefore have some options on the menu. This may be in part to Portuguese law that requires that public entities (schools, hospitals, etc) always have a vegan option on any meal's menu. We DO hope to one day arrive early enough at one of the places offering vegan pastel de nata - to be able to try it! So far, I've never tried this famous Portuguese treat!
@millionplacesoneworldАй бұрын
@@littlejoeUTube Thank you Joe for sharing👍 I'm not sure is it even possible to make Pastel de Nata vegan. I know cheese and vegan ice cream(not fruit sorberts etc. but like cream) are really good nowadays. I don't eat dairy(when possible), so I know. Let me ask around about vegan version of Pastel De Nata, if I will find I will let you know 😎 But yes, Portuguese traditional cuisine is heavily based around meat, fish, dairy(in sweets), so in small cafes it's harder to find options. Take care amigo! Tchau🫡

@lucchese20 Heeey👋 Thank you 🥳🥳🥳 Exactly like you said, it's not a scam, it's a great option 👌 A scam is when you go to tourist traps and they bring you slices of cured ham, cheese, and olives and charge you the price of a meal for 10 people for that 😄😄😄 The soup was vegetable (carrot). I'm not usually a soup eater, but I'm starting to adapt 😁 About the fish/meat ratio, yes, Portuguese eat a lot of fish, but Churrasqueiras are everywhere, so meat is a big deal here. We have many regional soup festivals, we have a variety of different soups, from North to South, on the islands. The most traditional ones are not even crushed, in Alentejo we use bread a lot in soup, in other regions other vegetables and even meat or fish (fish soup, various meat soups...). As a rule, our meals start with soup and in more inland areas, soup is the only dish in some meals, some of which are very nutritious and caloric for those who work for hours in the fields. In certain regions breakfast is soup. New people and people from cities are losing the tradition of soups and adulterating/adapting recipes! Children, some throw tantrums when soup appears. Enjoy

Hey Andres, I made it to Central Portugal, living there permanently since the end of last month ;) it's the same guy from the "Keep it simple, stupid." KZbin channel. I told you I'd make it there :). Oh, happy birthday! Mhm, I'm learning "Por Favor" on the Duolingo app, Brazilian Portuguese...

@fleedum I know, man. I've already subscribed about a month ago and have been checking out your videos. 🫡🇵🇹 Congratulations on your successful trip here. Are the dogs doing all right in Portugal? "Por favor" is also correct in Portuguese, but it sounds like Spanish, so maybe the waiter didn't like that😄😄😄 Thanks for congratulations, see you around🇵🇹 How far you are from major cities?
@fleedum2 ай бұрын
@@millionplacesoneworld The dogs are great, more nature, a nice lake, more free roam here until the sheep take back the territory ;). I'm about as far as you can be from the cities, I'm underneath Monsanto. So, 2hrs+ drive. Bought a 20k habitable property and I can work from here so my next goal may be to buy some farm land or save up for a house with land, maybe closer to Viseu to be closer to civilization. I'm really enjoying it here so far. We'll see about winter ;) I'll be speaking Portuguese by then, I'm practicing every day on Duolingo.

@fleedum2 ай бұрын
@@mariateixeira9769 oh thanks 👍 Eu falo portugues com meus vizinhos. Duolingo only supports Brazilian unfortunately, the neighbors said that was okay to start with. I'll learn with a Portuguese on iTalki after I complete Duolingo. Thanks for the explanation.

@@millionplacesoneworld - Many restaurants around the country serve Alheiras but if you want to experience the "real deal", you must go to Trás-os-Montes. I know, it's 5-6 hours away from Cascais but it's worth it. In other places it's kind of hit or miss, you never know if you're going to get a traditionally made Alheira or an industrially made one.

Who eats salad with their hands , not here in Portugal,, we use utensils, only pizza and burgers and barbecue we eat with our hands. Eating with your hands regular food is rude. Entrecosto passes if you're eating outside and in a less formal place but not in restaurants or when inside

It depends on what you are looking for. If it is bitoque, then no, you will not get the classic barbecue steak taste(but I love bitoque taste). However, if you go to specialized steak places, you can find options like wagyu etc. 🫡 But I will be honest with you, I come from Latvia and I discovered steak in Portugal, when I was 33 years old 😄 So I bet you know more about steaks 😎💯
