I like the subtlety on the Orion captain's face. He hears that his people won't always be pirates. He likely long accepted that he will never be seen as anything but an Orion pirate and was given the greatest gift he could have received in being told Orions will eventually escape that stigma.

I wonder if they planed this crossover all along, since they selected actors that actually could also play their characters. Usually it's not uncommon for voice actors to be older or not even the same gender, since some are extremely good at creating different voices. Also they speak usually different in animated series. Tawny Newsome is certainly at least a decade older than Mariner is supposed to be, but it still was totally fine. I also liked, that they adjusted their voices a little to let them sound more like a "real" person.

The trend nowadays is for voice actors to roughly match the ethnicity and likeness of the character they are playing (if they're human). It's the new PC environment created by accusations of "cultural appropriation" whitewashing and all that. So it's not that surprising that they happened to be perfect for the transition. The height difference is weird though; Ransom and Shaxs would be huge because they tower over Boimler and Mariner.

@@Varekai0723 Might be possible, since the artists made the animated characters resemble the actors voicing them. But Jerry O'Connel will need a hair dye at the very least, Eugene Cordero might be a bit too buff to compared to Rutherford so they''ll need a costume that hides that, and Gillian Vigman will need a lot of prosthetics.

I really don't enjoy the "regular" episodes. So many inconsistencies and plot holes and tech that doesn't make sense for the time period--but when they drop all the pretense and just go over the top on not being serious at all: it is amazing. The episode where they all sing is also one of my favorites and i've watched this one a couple times.

I think that lower decks also modernizes the show's design aesthetics while making the transition seamless. If you look at the UI and everything, it definitely has a lot more contemporary design considerations, especially their tablets. I think there are definitely ways to gracefully ease contemporary tastes into the outdated designs. The biggest critique I have with the new trek design aesthetics is that in 20-30 years or whatever the same level of ageing will be felt by viewers as TNG and TOS seem to us today. TNG radically departed from the TOS aesthetic, but it was also set in the future from the TOS, and ENT made an effort to make the design seem really old. I really think that the design in the TNG era really nailed the timeless look that can be adapted endlessly. I'm a graphic designer, and basically from 1960 to today we have been directly influenced by "high modernism" defined by designers like Massimo Vignelli. Every contemporary designer either directly uses those ideas, or reject them purposely. What makes it so long lasting and ubiquitous is that the framework is so neutral that you can pretty much apply different aesthetic vaneers and still have a robust and useable design. The same I think, can be said for the TNG design considerations. The use of the thin horizontal and thick vertical design elements is pretty much the only defining characteristic of the UI. Colors, as we've seen, can be swapped out and changed while maintaining the style. The very little use of icons also comes in handy, because typography is basically timeless. Futura for example was designed in like the 1920s and yet it looks modern and futuristic to this day. Books are still typeset in Baskerville even tho it was designed in the 1700s. So just words and the thick/thin design motifs allows for a huge flexibility with graphics. You can start incorporating more dynamic imagery like photos and more dynamic vector illustrations that weren't in former shows, but have it look in place. As far as bridge design goes, it looks to be a classic reproduction of TNG era bridge design, which tbh isnt the most modern looking bridge designs, but I think it took some good liberties in deviating from the Enterprise-D 70s bank/waiting room aesthetic. I think the new live actions, especially set around or before the time of TOS could be willing to have more buttons and paired down screens with graphics and I think it would look 20 times better. Idk about carpets, but wood paneling would probably look great too

This clip contains the one continuity slip-up I noticed, here it is: when Boimler is beginning transport he quickly raises his hand with the matching Vulcan "live long" V hand salute, then we immediately see the landing party materialize on the planet and Boimer's arm is not up in the salute like it should have still been. I know, nit-picky, but just saw it again in this clip... very possible the salute scene was shot later and the salute might have been an improvised thing...
