I love the implication that Boimler and Mariner's PASSIVE influence on the Enterprise crew helped shape them into the heroes they became. Uhura in TOS was very dedicated to her work and job but wholly knew how and when to cut back, relax, and have fun, and was all the more competent and effective at her job for it... and this scene implies she learned that from MARINER, in this scene, at this bar, when the few minutes Mariner insisted she take lead her to relax and caused her mind to clear and spot what she hadn't been able to when she was agitated. Mariner helped MAKE the hero she idolized, and that is awesome.

And let's not forget.. in the books at least.. uhurus legacy is as great or perhapse greater than kirk or spock when it comes to the grand scheme of things. She becomes one of the greatest admirals in starfleet history. Overhauling starfleet security from the ground up. And becomes one of the most famed Admirals in history. . Her decisions and career have massive effects felt throughout the federation. She would be to starfleet history what someone like Admiral Nimitz would be to Americam naval history.

Not even just as a character. Ms Nichols was a recruiter for NASA and worked a lot with the NAACP. She inspired and literally built the future for so many people. I was fortunate to see her at Emerald City Comicon. She told great stories about her time working on the show and how great it was. Pretty sure you can find it on KZbin, but her meeting MLK is a hilarious story. If you dig a bit more, you might find the one where she talks about the kissing scene with Shatner and how they basically tricked the network to show the first interracial kiss on TV. That woman was a delight and lived such an interesting life.

When I was in the Army, I did not want to go to the promotion board to become an NCO(was happy as 'lower decks'). They forced me to go anyway and told me that if I didn't study that the only person that would look foolish was me. So, I did. I studied the regs inside and out, and just like Mariner, I learned I could pretty much get away with murder if done the right way. I never got promoted and I made my command staff's lives a living hell for the next 1 1/2 years before I got out. They didn't like my sunglasses one day, so I whipped out AR-670-1 and recited it from memory to the First Sergeant. The final part states that they cannot be worn if "deemed faddish by the commanding officer". So I asked him, "What's the Old Man doing right now?" The 1SG instantly wanted to drop the whole thing but I was like, "Oh no no no. You called me out on it, let's go find out." I took them off and handed them to our Captain (O-3) and he looked at me and asked, "What's up?" "Sir", I said, "Do you think these look faddish to you?" He said, "No. Why?" I took them from him(they were also prescription which the reg also allows for), looked at the 1SG, smirked at him and said, "No reason, sir, thank you", and walked out. They forced me to learn the rules and I used them against them at EVERY opportunity. It was the biggest mistake they ever made, to arm me with knowledge. That was 23 years ago, and I still think about it and laugh to this day about it. haha

1.) [1:31] *_"You know Starfleet Codes?"_** --* It is important to remember... Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) was literally born into Starfleet life ( [Boimler]: _"Your mom's a Captain, and your dad's an Admiral. You're basically Starfleet royalty.";_ from *[LD 1x10 - "No Small Parts"]* ), and raised in it. So despite Mariner's outward rebellious attitude towards the rules, Mariner does know all Starfleet protocols and regulations by heart. Even Mariner's body language (stance) changes when Mariner's goes into _'rules mode';_ great subtle detail(s) like that help deliver/enhance the scene. 2.) [2:54] *_"What's 'Dom-Jot'..?"_** --* This is also why you take breaks with friends, because you never know when alternative eyes/perspectives may offer insight (Ortegas) and explanation (Mariner) from their own experiences. *;)* Thanks for uploading this, *Star Trek Friendly.* :)
@JKSSubstandard
@JKSSubstandard 9 ай бұрын
Not just born into it. In the episode where her classmates are the replacement captain, they say that Mariner was top of her class and expected to be the first from the class to the captains chair, which is why her friend was disappointed to find her still an ensign. So she 100% knows the books front to back

@@JKSSubstandard -- Correct, from *[LD 1x07 - "Much Ado About Boimler"],* with Captain Amina Ramsey (USS Oakland), voiced by the lovely and talented *_Toks Olagundoye._* Thus the _"raised in it"_ (Starfleet life) portion of my Reply-comment too. *;)* It will probably/eventually be completely revealed what happened to change Mariner from the straight-laced _'Starfleet brat'_ of Mariner's youth (pre-Cerritos), to the pseudo-rebel Mariner is today (LD-era). But the LD writers have been smart/wise in doing so slowly across the LD-series, rather than cramming everything into an _'Origin Story'_ episode.

I like the Way Uhura handled this slightly vague info about her future, that she will become this incredible badass space adventure. Instead of it being mine blowing to her, she feels very surreal and confused about it. It's hard to appreciate who you'll be in the future, when right now you're just a nobody. It's like she was describing someone else to her. (and in a meta sense, she is.)

Tawney Newsom who voices Mariner and lower decks and plays her live-action here is a huge Trek fan. Apparently it's a running gag where her and Jack Quaid will take a look at their scripts for lower decks start geeking out in front of Mike McMahn and Mike will start assigning reading assignments to the other cast members on which episode station watch in order to get the references for the episode that they're recording for. And she has made no secret that the likes of Whoopi Goldberg and Nichelle Nichols are huge personal Heroes of hers. So the dialogue is basically layered with the subtext of the characters across 122 years interacting, the actress interacting with a character that she has admired for as long as she's been a fan of the franchise, and one actor who stepped into a legendary role literally last year interacting with someone who has been within this family for slightly longer but they are both fairly new to the franchise as they were both hired as part of this era. The meta text of this episode is SO RICH

How would she NOT know Starfleet codes? She's in Starfleet....
@orrthehunter

he behavior gives the impression she is one of those who got in but did not bother to remember those codes after passing. Rarely does anyone expect the slacker type of the team to be the one who literally knows every single rules. However, in her case she knows all the rules because she use them to slack off.

Anyone feel get the feeling that Uhura's anxiety about living up to expectations is a bit of (perhaps unintentional) meta commentary from Celia Gooding about walking in Nichelle Nichols' shoes? Because if I was in her place (albeit playing Scotty or something instead) then I know I'd be feeling that kind of pressure.

I have been a Nausicaan since 1982. And I mean the Nausicaä of the manga of Miyazaki Hayao. I did meet the Nausicaa of Greek mythology a few years later. The one thing that irks me about Star Trek is their calling their new bad guys Nausicaan. I guess it is a tribute as many of the production crew and writers of TNG were anime fans. But Nausicaa is a heroine to many. Yours truly included.

@1bulma1

Bingo. they did not want to find an actress that looked like uhura because they did not want uhura to outshine chapel like she did in the 60s. they needed an ugly uhura to validate the spock/chapel romance. reason they also made her so young. they want people to see her as a kid, so she does not outshine the other female characters they play up as adults. what is grating is that a lot of fans have noticed how miscast uhura is and when we try to talk about it, the media shuts us down and ban us from their forum and website. so the agenda is real.
