Video is a great guide. A few tips. If your cords are broken, raise your bottom sash and cut a length of wood to hold the window up. Second I found it way easier to remove the whole left side liner. Then remove the top. The reinstall of the top liner is way easier. Third, lubricate the sides of the windows and the liner tracks. I used a silicone grease. It really makes it easier to slide the old sashes. Fourth, be patient!!! My windows were installed 40+ years ago. I had a couple that were racked in very tightly. Cut your caulking if it is there. Don't be afraid to snip off some plastic tabs if you are struggling.

Great guide, did a restoration for 7 windows and didnt find any surprises thanks to this video. I would just add two cents by recommending to tape the window stool to prevent scratching when forcing the left jamb liner out as it may be tricky and the stools' wood is delicate.

Getting the sash cords out of the balancer and back into the window is quite tricky. In the video you show how you can pull them out with a needle nose pliers, but you don't show that as soon as you get them out slightly you should grab the cord with your hand so it can't retract. The needle nose pliers easily slip off of the nylon tubes even when gripped firmly. If it is retracted very far when this happens the cord snaps back, breaks the tube off of the cord and is gone inside of the balancer. Balancer is then ruined. Also it is not possible, or would be very difficult, to insert the pin while holding with the pliers, so you have to grab the cord with your hand and release the pliers before inserting pin in hole in sash. You should clearly demonstrate the technique for pulling out the cord with the pliers and then grasping the cord, then inserting the tube. Also emphasise that you must grasp the cord with your hand to avoid ruining your balancer if the pliers slip.

Thanks for this. I have had to do this so many times on my Anderson double hungs. (starting within 2 years of installation) That is when I found out that andersons lifetime warranty doesn't mean anything. I have most likely replaced 20-30 of this on my windows but it is always good to get a refresher before I go taking them apart again. BTW These things are close to $50 dollars now

Conspicuously absent from all Anderson's video is one showing the replacement of the sash liner of an Anderson Cottage window. Those are the windows with a lower sash that is 50% larger than the upper sash. When raised to its limit, the upper sash on my Anderson window still sits on 16.5 inches of sash liner. (With ordinary Anderson double hung windows, it sits on about 3.) Anderson says the removal and replacement of the liner is the most difficult part of the job. It is more than that; it's impossible - if you want to avoid damaging the liner. That's not an exageration. I spoke with Anderson tech experts and was told that the way to do it is by using a dry lubricant on the frame, and by heating the liner with a hair dryer. This didn't help, not even a little. I damaged two liners using extreme care and patience during the attempted installation. If it were possible to replace the liner of a Cottage window, Anderson would have posted a video showing how. There is no such video. I'm not a suspicious person, but I think I know precisely why this is the case.

I'm guessing what you're asking for is absent from this video because this video is for Andersen Narrowline windows, not Andersen Cottage windows.

I have Andersen windows, (circa 1982) and bathroom window won't stay open. It will slam down violently if not held. I believe the sash cord for the bottom sash is broken. Can you please post a video on how to repair that or give me some advice? Thanks!

I saw this video. It's great if your still have sash cords, but mine are completely gone for the lower sash. I need a video that shows how to get to where the sash cords are attached so I can replace them.

Andersen will not tell you that this is possible and they will not sell you the cord. But if you can take the window apart and take the balancer down, you can take the balancer apart and replace the cord. Get a roll of nylon about 1/8 dia. It is tricky to get the cord the right length, get the spring wound up to the right point, and get the cord the right number of times around the spool. Use one that is not broken as a guide. Andersen wants your $40 and it can be done for a few cents. The mechanism looks like WWII stuff.

While I find this video helpful What you did not mention is how to identify what balance is needed. I've looked up every set of numbers on the window balance and none of them match up with those listed on the Andersen window site, Any help would be appreciated, And I do not know the window size as it is a customers home and I'm not there

This window is so poorly designed, I hate it! The jambs are very difficult to remove without damaging them and rain leaks inside them from the top. The sill allows rain to flow under the side jambs to the wood below and adjacent. The glazing isnt rainproof so wood rails and stiles get wet and rots. The cords break easily or the platic end pops off, requiring replacement of the entire balance. They are under so much tension and are impossible to grasp without a plier, and even with the plier its an ordeal that sometimes ends in breaking/requiring replacement. The weatherstripping is filled with open cell foam that soaks up rainwater, acting as a sponge next to the wood making them soggy and rotted from the inside. Andersen should send us these replacement parts for free, their design is so defective. All my windows are rotting! One is completely hollow inside, im going to fill it with caulk and cross my fingers. I will never buy Andersen windows.
