EDIT: I've been hearing from some folks saying they aren't able to get the foam on the top. I'm thinking it's the cucumber. I recently tried it with two different cukes (of the same type) and one came out with foam and the other did not. A solution to this is to add .25-.5 oz of aquafaba and that should help emulsify things. Either way, it's gonna taste good so don't worry too much about it! This seems heavily inspired by an older cocktail, the Southside (london dry gin, lime juice, mint, simple syrup, angostura), augmented by the cucumber and rosewater. The Southside and Tom Collins are my go-to drinks for turning people on to gin.
@DzigaJerkov2 жыл бұрын
And the eastside subs the mint for cucumber
@bry4052 жыл бұрын
I believe the eastside has both mint and cucumber. The southside I believe only has the mint. The difference for the J&R is that it also adds rose water, salt and bitters. I could be wrong though

This is a wonderful and fresh cocktail. I can see myself holding one of these more or less constantly during the summer. Really reminds me of the White Linen, a summertime favorite in Sacramento CA. Gin, lemon (or lime, depending on who you ask), cucumber (and maybe mint depending on who you ask), simple syrup, and St Germain for the floral/sweet component. It's really refreshing and aromatic without being overwhelmingly floral.

Really love the rose water on the mint leaf. It’s like dew! Def gimlet, south side, east side adjacent. Classics are a great starting point for making new drinks. Sub this, add that. Usually ends up at least interesting and good even if you choose something that sounds odd.
@phrides2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, perhaps more overlaid upon than adjacent to the Eastside, since it's just adding rosewater and salt (the latter of which I already include in my Eastside). Add the presentation, the occasion of a new bar and holiday, and it certainly deserves some local fame. I'll have to make some rosewater when the flowers bloom this spring and the mint is bursting forth to test Anders notion that it deserves it's own place as a unique cocktail beyond the immediate environ of the Violet Hour.

can't wait to try this! The only thing I would mention is that it could be difficult the get that layer of foam without egg white or aquafaba. It’s to my great detriment that I’ve never really enjoyed cucumber in cocktails… especially considering it was so commonly used in Petraske’s drinks that I’m sure heavily influenced the early VH menu. I did learn something really interesting here though. I didn’t realize VH opened just in 2007… I thought it was far more established by the time I was frequenting in ‘08 because I moved to a place down the street. Sadly haven’t been back in years (as in, maybe once since big star opened) but always have fond memories and appreciate the impact it’s had on our local cocktail culture. In fact, just finished a paper plane prior to watching this video. Cheers, keep up the excellent work.
