But not everybody likes that fierce herbal bitterness, so I found a recipe online advising to make a small negroni (20 ml of everything) and then top it up with a dry, orangy IPA beer (I used jaipur from Thornbridge and Bitter Truth Orange Bitters). What a coincidence! I literally just rewatched the Eastside video for a Cocktails 101 I'm hosting because it's such great introduction to gin. In addition to the juniper flavor, I find that people are put off by anything that isn't a G&T for three reasons: 1) Unless the drink is built in the glass it's "too much of a hassle" to make. 2) If the drink calls for bitters or liqueurs outside of Angostura, Aperol or triple sec it's deemed complicated or expensive. 3) Lowballs and drinks served up are often considered "too strong". Once I became aware of this, it got a lot easier to make people excited about making and ordering cocktails.

I universally introduce gin cocktails with a bees knees. Absolutely one of my personal favorites and I always have honey syrup on hand. Having said that, I have never had an eastside (we never have cucumbers...?) Also, my barrier to a gin martini isn't the gin, its the vermouth. I am still building my palate to tolerate vermouth (of any kind), though drinks like the scofflaw are helping there. :)
@jacquin85113 жыл бұрын
Try Italian vermouths, or craft versions. Martini and Noilly Prat are somehow the most common while being the least likeable. Drink Manhattans, Negronis and Martinez to get into red vermouths!
@rocnathan4 жыл бұрын
If people ask me, I usually recommmend one of these five: breakfast martini, last word, gimlet, martinez (gin/genever at your discretion), martini. And of course the aviation. ALWAYS the aviation. Not such a big fan of the bee's knees, but on occasion it's fun. That said, going to try the artillery, because I've recently been trying some Spanish vermouths and with the right one you can introduce a whole world of complexity.

And then I started watching you and greg during the pandemic and my father in law won a bottle of Tanqueray, which he gave to me because he "hates" gin... I needed to find a way to drink it and so glad I did. It's now gin is my favorite spirit. Great video. About a year ago I decided to go from Gin-Hater to Gin-Fan and started playing with several brands and cocktails. The drink that really got me hooked was the Bombay Saphire Laverstoke. With some experimenting at home the Aviation became one of my favorites, as well as a Corpse Reviver #2. I like Negroni variations quite a bit as well, but can't take a full dose of Campari. I still can't do a G&T or a Martini - the astringency and bitterness are too much for my palate. When used in cocktails that feature lemon or something viscous - like Cynar - I'm super happy.

I'm still not brave enough to try a martini because I'm iffy on vermouth, but I wouldn't drink a vodka martini either.
