Counterpoint: 22.5" scale ain't just for kids, and branding these as "mini" is a big missed opportunity to make a quality instrument for grown adults under 5'10" who would like more choice beyond 25.5" and 24". And as has been mentioned, 11s are the way to go here.

@Kyle Smith you’ll struggle on a regular guitar cuz of your hands. Plus black logo squiers are absolute dogshit. I own one and never liked it ever. I’d recommend spending 3-400 if you’re actually passionate to learn guitar and 1-200 on an amp

@@0000song0000 Original full size Fender Mustangs cane with 22.5 in. scale, later models went to 24 in. An original will set you back a small fortune but both Fender and Squire make reissues with 24 ln scale as well as Duo-Sonics and Jaguars. As you are accustomed to a 23 ln. acoustic I don't think you'll have any problem with a 24 ln. electric. Hope you find one that takes you where you want to go. Cheers

The guitar came in today. I tuned it, played it, and it did not go out of tune for me. No problems there (I wasn't being really hard on it). It was really easy to get around on the neck and was fun to play. Frets were smooth enough and action was good (low). It sounded great too. The back of the neck was a little rough, but I just put some lemon oil on it and it felt smoother. No reason not to get this guitar. It is great!

I bought the mini jazzmaster and liked it so much I bought the mini strat too. They are obviously aimed at kids, but having a guitar suited to higher tunings adds something for any guitarist, I have mine in G like a terz guitar., might tune the strat tenor style. Was fine out of the box, the only fault was the fret edges were pretty sharp, bought a fret levelling file and fixed it in seconds

If I was getting someone a short scale guitar and they wanted to play in standard tuning I would fit heavier strings to help with the tuning stability.
@jimmyjames2022
@jimmyjames2022 4 жыл бұрын
Comes with 009s and I wondered this too, but while cowboy chords might be no problem, would the heavier strings make it tougher for little fingers to bar and lead higher up the scale.
@jameslewis2635
@jameslewis2635 4 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyjames2022 Not really. The reason why heavy strings seem harder to bend is because they up the tension in comparison to thinner strings. As the tension is much lower due to the short scale length the two properties should even out to play similar to a standard sized guitar with 9's or 10's as long as you pick the right guage.
@MrZenonymous
@MrZenonymous 4 жыл бұрын
James Lewis - this. Swapped out the 9s for 11s on my sons Jackson Minion and not only is the tuning great, the bending and barre chords are fine because the strings are under less tension and it sounds immense... I prefer playing it to my full size guitar... May need to adjust the truss rod afterwards though to make sure the action is still nice and low...

These might just fit a standard 25.5 inch neck as several of these mini guitars have been scaled the exact same as putting a capo on the second fret of a 25.5 inch scale -- so the bridge wouldn't necessarily need to move. As always, verify before getting one to experiment with.

For the tuning stability issue, you can always take a leaf out of Taylor's method for the GS Mini guitars - use heavier gauge strings like 12s or 13s. Main issue is that it won't be as easy to press chords, but the string tension would be a bit better and the child would also be more accustomed to "proper" string tension

I’m probably getting this guitar when my 14th birthday comes around this November. If not I’ll be getting the Eastcoast GS100. Edit: I know a couple of you like hearing stories of new people joining the community so here’s mine! Back in 2010, my grandad received an acoustic guitar from a friend of his. He has plenty already and in 2017 finally decided I was old enough to get into guitar and he gave it to me. He tried teaching me but it didn’t really work out. The guitar was crappy and way too big. I donated it to my school and in 2019 they had no use for it and gave it back. Since then I was perfecting my singing and piano skills, and I’m pretty happy with how far I’ve gotten, and I want to take my music production to another step! It’s been lying around but I’ve decided electric guitar is definitely the way to go for me!

I read somewhere that Hendrix liked to record with a Mustang. Now, given the size of his hands, a smaller scale instrument can't be that much of a handicap, and I suspect that some difficult Jazz chords might become more accessible. Consider the Byrdland-- 23 inch scale and the guitarists who favor that instrument are not beginners by any stretch of the imagination. These minis with 22.75 inch scales are close enough to a Byrdland. I only wish the necks were a bit wider. String spacing can be a problem, more so than the shorter scale.

I am an adult with small hands, as far as the issues with staying in tune, would an upgrade help solve this, when standard tuning? The tuner's is what I mean

Add the Squier Mustang HH to this group as 'the bigger brother'. The size and weight is pretty close to these.

Beginners should start life with hardtails and humbuckers (noiseless included) for a smooth learning curve ;-) Top mount jacks are trouble in the making though....

The Squier mini-strats are a pleasure to play... but they don't like to stay in tune! At least the 3 I've played

You had mentioned the Strats had been in production for a while but didn't mention that the output had been moved from the normal Strat position to the side

Maybe a thicker set of strings would fix the tension issue? Stevie ray baby.

Short scale tuning issues... stretch the strings several times and often. Metallurgical issues at lower tension. Works very well. I wish the "Jazzmaster" had single coils. Why humbuckers? Fender is scared to death of making a ligit JM? Oh well... thanks fellas!
