How about the ultimate home recording rig. There's a whole world of gear to explore there, audio interfaces, monitors, daw's, plugins, small valve heads with DI capabilities. It's pretty much the way the modern bedroom guitarist is heading anyway and you could do it without and by busting the bank ( not sure it's possible for under £500 but I'd be interested to see what you can do). Also KoRn is way over due! It's definitely time to see some 7 string action

I definitely wouldn’t raise the budget. Calling $1500 “on a budget” is already a bit of a stretch. Not many people can afford to buy a 500+ guitar with a 500+ amp and still buy a couple hundred worth of pedals. I’m not saying to lower it, because I get what you guys are trying to do, but definitely don’t raise it!

They sort of covered nu metal with their "Ultimate modern rock rig", though you could argue that rig is better fit for bands like Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown etc. that are more modern hard rock rather than nu metal. Even still though I think they came up with a great nu metal rig in the Wes Borland/Limp Bizkit episode. I still want them to do Linkin Park badly though I do admit a hypothetical Brad Delson rig from the Hybrid Theory/Meteora era of Linkin Park probably wouldn't be all that different from the Wes Borland rig since all the big nu metal bands at the time were at one point or another using the same basic ingredients for tone (six or seven string Ibanez RG, Mesa Dual Rectifier, delay and chorus for ambiance, and random modulation effects).

I want them to do Megadeth too. They're are some issues that they have to overcome though; -Matt simply can't play most of Megadeth's riffs and probably doesn't want to. If you notice the Metallica Without Busting the Bank episode they used exclusively slower songs and clean parts for Matt when he was playing the role of James Hetfield. Same goes for Mastodon and Iron Maiden as well. They could do what they did for the Gojira video and get Joss, who is a metal guy that can shred with the best of them, to do Chris Poland/Marty Friedman's parts while Rabea does Dave Mustaine's parts, but that requires Joss or a guitar player of similar ability to be available. -Deciding on which Megadeth lead guitarist to do. Most likely they would probably stick to Marty Friedman as the most renowned Megadeth stuff (Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction) was done with Marty, but also leaves out the classic material Megadeth did with Chris Poland. Marty and Chris had drastically different tones due not only to different playing styles (Chris was more of a jazz fusion oriented player while Marty is the quintessential neo classical shredder) but they used different guitars, pickups, amps etc. Nailing down Dave Mustaine's tone is pretty easy; ts mostly JCM 800 like lots of metal guys from that era and find a Jackson or ESP with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and you're golden. Now Dave makes whoever is playing with him to use basically the same rig in the form of an Axe FX II patch for studio and live playing (which is why they wouldn't try replicate the tone of say Chris Broderick or Kiko Loureiro). But nailing Marty or Chris Poland's tone is going to be harder.

As always Amazing you two are truly Captains of Tone! - That being said. . . I used to have a Tom Scholz Rockman (I believe it was an X100), about 20 years ago, well it disappeared long ago and I still miss it. I find myself longing for its beautiful complex but pure sound- it was/may still be the perfect quick plug in and play tone for me to practice/noodle around. I did get an old Rockman Guitar Ace (still a signature series by SRD) but its just not quite the same. The Guitar Ace has no chorus, compression, or reverb settings. SO. . . how about a SOUNDS LIKE - Tom Scholz Rockman / Boston / Def Leppard Hysteria- without busting the bank. You have gotta love that saturated compressed singing, little bit dirty, tone. John is most often using Gibson Les Pauls in D Standard so a les paul is obviously the way around for amps he used a Diezel VH4 to replicate his Kustom clean tone and a Cornford M50H for the higher gain stuff and when he uses a telecaster he uses Dr Z amplifiers, so i'd say probably a Blackstar Silverline combo and pedals he uses an EHX Small Clone, a Vibrato modified into a tremolo, an Moog MF delay for slapback on his telecaster rig, a Strymon El Capistan, a surf rider reverb, a Strymon Bigsky, a Boss RV5, a wren and cuff fuzz, and three Xotic boost pedals. so altogether i chose: Epi Les Paul Classic, Blackstar Silverline 100, Boss TR2, Xotic RC Boost, JHS 3 series Delay coming in at £1390

When you went to the pedals, I was thinking you had to get a Klon style pedal since that's just iconic to classic rock. I also love the Tubescreamer going into that Fuzz. On my rig, I use a TS clone with the level and drive at 9 o'clock just to push a little bit, and go into a Swollen Pickle Fuzz that's set fairly low and I get this really nice, aggressive dirty tone that I just love.

Good luck with that one. Unless you're prepared to forego the sustainer on Phil Collen's PC1 and use an affordable Jackson, I think the most affordable guitar with a built in sustainer was a Fernandez but it lacked the trademark Floyd Rose so either way you would lose something important. They use multiple guitars on record. Some of the songs on Hysteria use up to 80 tracks. So your best bet is trying to replicate the it live rigs. I think I'm right in saying Pete Willis used a Gibson Explorer but wouldn't swear to it. Steve Clark was usually seen toting a Les Paul, many of the guitars on Pyromania and Hysteria were Hamers (I think Fender bought the brand and is on long term hiatus), Viv Campbell has recently endorsed an Epiphone Les Paul but I think he was using guitars from a chap called Tom Anderson for years and those things weren't cheap.

@andrewharper1609
@andrewharper1609 5 жыл бұрын
@@jakegittus8381 It would be interesting. A possible solution might be a sustain pedal (if such a thing exists, I have never heard of one) or an ebow. They don't use second hand on sounds like which is a pity as a second hand PC1 can be found at about the right price. Apparently they used a Marshall to record most of Pyromania but used a virtual amp called a Rockman on the bulk of Hysteria. From the looks of it Steve Clark also used Randall amps. Blackstar have just released a mini amp with the Hysteria graphic on the front so how close that sounds would be fantastic to know.

IMO I think classic rock ended right about the time Guns N Roses came out. I believe Rock music was changed once the 90's hit with the grunge era as well. The amps at the time were getting into the true distortion sound (like the Soldano SLO, Peavey 5150 and Mesa Dual Rectifier).

I approve matts choices. That’s a great, versatile rig for most gigs (probably not for metal lol.) EQ is a VERY good idea - could also function as a clean boost even without the echoplex boost, which is a sound I love - boosted signal hitting the preamp hard. Spend a couple of hundred more and you could have a Baja tele which would be pretty badass. I’d probably add an analogue style delay too. The Caitlinbread Adineko was suggested to me by the engineer on my last recording session - I tried and it sounds incredible.
@KeeperOfPoops

i disapprove personally cos i mainly associate the rhythm guitar setup with a stratocaster, the ultimate classic rock rig's rhythm guitarist rarely used a telecaster, the amp is a correct port of call considering they used fender amps though for pedals i'd probably get a chorus for clean tones too
