I live within 10 minutes of where Vox used to be in Dartford. It’s now a petrol station. Strange to think it’s where the Amps for the Beatles, Queen, U2, and the early Stones come from… AND the innovator of the Wah pedal. Strange how a little town in Kent could have so much influence on music around the world.

There’s a weird connection between Vox and petrol stations. Have you heard the story about what went in the ground to fill the void when they moved the petrol station up the road? Story is that The Shadows/Beatles/Stones etc used to go on tour with Vox gear (in the early 60’s, before flight cases) and come back with their amps all scuffed. They’d go back to Vox (who they were endorsees for), who would replace them and they’d just go in the shed out the back. Eventually, they ended up with this huge pile of scuffed, roadworn amps. Eventually, they were building on the site of a petrol station down the road and needed a load of backfill to fill in the void where the petrol tanks had been…. I think that would make an interesting episode of Time Team. “Here’s the Vox Superbeatle Paul McCartney played at Shea Stadium” etc.

I'm blessed to have a 95% original tweed Bassman, that most assuredly *looks* its age. How I got it is one of the great pawn-shop find stories. I was in a pawn-shop - ironically about 150yards from the best music store for 100 miles in any direction - when I saw it. Couldn't believe my eyes. Also couldn't believe the price tag: $40...forty *Canadian* dollars. Walked around it, and saw that it was missing a power tube, missing one of the back panels, and missing one of the P10Rs, with an empty space where it was supposed to go. The proprietor must have heard me mumbling about the missing speaker, did some quick mental math, and offered me the amp for 3/4 of the listed price - $30. SOLD! I bit my tongue, plunked my money on the counter, calmly walked the amp to my car, and then drove out of town so fast, you'd think I had just sold baking soda as cocaine to the Hell's Angels and been found out. It'll be about 30 years I've owned it now. I've sunk a wee bit of money into it, in terms of getting someone to make the missing rear panel, buying power tubes and a 4th P10R, a little bit of recapping, and getting it tuned up, but the thirty bucks was well worth it. Decent amp!

My family had an antique shop. One day a guy brought in a Silvertone Twin Twelve tube amp, two 12" speakers with the head that stores in the speaker cab. It had a few bad tubes. He only wanted $5 for the amp. (beer money) I gave him the $5, there was a radio shop down the street that had the tubes... I eventually sold the amp, which was a mistake, I saw one just like it at a local guitar shop with a $1,200 price tag. I now own a Hot Rod Deluxe, which I would NEVER part with!
@markhammer643
@markhammer643 Жыл бұрын
@@andyginterblues2961 I bought the Bassman in late 1992, when the internet was pretty much text-only, and there were considerably fewer wide-circulation guitar mags. I've had my tweed Princeton, that I bought for $50, since 1976 or so, when we had even less information available about gear, and there was really no such thing as "vintage", just "used" and "old". As more and more information about what's desirable, and also what it's worth, becomes available, "bargains" have turned into an endangered species, and pawn-shop prizes are relics of a long-gone past. Glad I was able to get mine while they were still getable. Hope others have had similar luck.

I played in several bands in college with guys that had Bassman and Vox amps. There weren't too many Marshall amps around as they cost a ton of bucks in the 70's. I remember being invited to play at a frat party with a couple of guys and the other guitarist had set up a very nice Vox AC-100, which was the first one I had ever seen. Had a real nice cabinet with 4 Celestions in it. I hauled in my modified circuit Fender Dual Showman with the dual 15" equipped cabinet and we proceeded to rock that party to the wee hours of the morning. Those were the good old days.

Amps! Love 'em. I found heaven when I bought an original 1960 Fender Concert-Amp. I consider it a 59 Bassman in brown tolex. It like the bassman has 4 10" speakers. It has the same output transformer as the 59 bassman. The main difference is the harmonic tremolo of the Concert. Dreamy and so satisfying tremolo. Not quite a '59 bassman, but is is darn close and can get that sound if you want it. But can also give you a trem sound that is maybe the best Fender ever put in an amp.

“Finding an amp that you can connect with…”. Yep. You said a mouthful there! I grew up with all these sounds, amps, realities, and can attest to your assertions. Great job! Lots of great info for anyone interested, willing to listen, consider, learn. All of these amps are CLASSICS! Each provides a different flavor and group of sensibilities. Matching the right amp to the means of usage is really important. It’s really important to also note, that while there’s been lots of developments, new products over the intervening decades, there really hasn’t been any major, significant improvements. Aside from a few prohibitively expensive boutique amps, (Duncan’s, Dumbles, Jim Kelley, etc.), nothing significant. Most of the boutique amps are modified Fender, Marshall or Vox circuits. I’ve owned and played Boogie’s, Seymour Duncan, modeling amps, and they’re all very nice, useful. But I recently went back, and sought original Fender, Marshall, and Vox amps, simply because they are the baseline, foundations, of the great sounds and music I so enjoyed. I can hear the young folks Pooh pooing, rolling their eyes, dismissing my assertions. That’s fine! But until something truly better comes along, your just being played for a lot of money and inferior products. I love my Boogie, my Duncan is truly forward looking as a piece of musical gear, but they have their shortcomings. The old Fender’s and Marshall’s, Vox’s have a proven record of functioning and producing truly memorable, musical sounds. That’s why we’re still using, discussing them today. If you’ve got a profiling or modeling amp, and that’s working for you, great! But for me, they’re pale imitators of older iterations, lacking the bloom, compression, complexity, dwell, dispersion of the original tube amps. It’s just not even close. Great job Rhett.

When discussing the genesis of the Marshall amp it is simply impossible not to mention the impact of Eric Clapton playing his 1960 Les Paul Standard through a 45-watt model 1962 Marshall 2x12 combo (JTM 45) with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers in 1966. It set the template for all that would follow. He, of course, would go on to 100-watt stacks with Cream.

The Beatles didn’t put Vox on the map - The Shadows did. Their place in the canon of UK pop/rock music cannot be underestimated. A lot of those 60’s bands that became hugely influential’s home-grown guitar hero was Hank Marvin from the Shadows. It was his needs that directly led to the development of the AC30 from the AC15. (Needing to be clean at higher volumes and getting over the screaming for Cliff Richard, who he and the rest of the The Shadows were the backing band for).

I started out as an acoustic rocker back in the 70's. When I started getting seriously into electric guitar, a really experienced player educated me that an electric guitar is only half of the instrument It is only a complete instrument when plugged into its other half, the amp. I still firmly believe that to this day. Great video!.

Stuff like this gives me comfort now and I can enjoy vicariously I lived on Fort Myers Beach and lost everything I own in hurricane Ian, including 9 guitars and 5 amps. Vox is my choice also. Psychologically, I know that part of it is the Beatles connection, (along with Brian May). Assuming the particular amp you've got is a good example of its type. I think the mental association people make with their guitar heroes can add a little inspiration for a player. It's part of the reason we choose the guitars and amps that we do, your psycholgical draw to it based on your own personal guitar heroes. But like I said, the amp itself has to be a good one of course, and not a lemon. (A dog is a dog, no matter what brand!) For the type of playing I do, Vox is the perfect amp. Thnaks for this video, Rhett. Good one!

Rhett, gotta agree with you on the Vox AC30, and I'll add the AC15 to your assessment. I have a reissue master volume AC15 from the early 2000s. I put a set of top-end NOS tubes in it, a much higher-grade reverb pan (which eliminated a rattle when using reverb), and an Alnico Blue speaker (which made the biggest difference). Wow! It is the one amp I just keep coming back to - I love it! I just wish it weren't quite so heavy for an old rocker (I'm 70) to move around. I can't imagine lugging an AC 30 around.

The one element that the modeling amps can never reproduce is chance of "Happy accidents" produced by the interaction of gear and player and the the spontaneous inspiration and joy these accidents produce, as Paul McCartney put it,the tube and analog gear is more " fuck -upable".Until programmers can find a way to introduce these random elements , the tube amp will rule.

No sane person could argue otherwise. But for me it's Fender. I love the tweeds, of course, but out of every amp I've ever owned, the one that just puts me in tone heaven is my '69 Princeton Reverb, drip edge with a Celestion G10 I stole from my '96 Prosonic (a horribly underrated, under-appreciated amp). Great video and background, thanks Rhett. These amps are amazing when played on their own, but I can only imagine what a rig with an AC30, Marshall 1959SL 100-watt, and Fender Bassman would sound like...it must be glorious! I have a lower wattage rig that is similar: a Vox AC15 Twin with Celestion Blues, a Marshall SV20H (20-watt plexi) and a Fender Tweed Deluxe reissue (12 watt, mods include Celestion Blue speaker + 12AX7 in v1), and I can honestly say that I will never need another amp ever again. You can combine Vox/Marshall/Fender amps together to get an infinite array of tones and make them sound like pretty much anything. Life long learning at its best.

Working in the box, I like throwing a marshall guv’nor sim into an ac30 sim as I’m looking to get more distortion than overdrive and the vox just doesn’t do it well. But I like the chime-y twang and the way it handles the low end as it gives a percussive chunk to hard rock and metal chugs, so using the guv’nor for the distortion and the vox for shaping gets me an interesting sound

One of the guitarists at school (late 60s) traded his big amp for a Fender Twin and was amazed at how loud it was, assuming that it was very powerful. I look at the back and said nope, 6V6 push pull delivers 14 Watts RMS. The amazing volume was more about speaker efficiency. Great video again Rhett.

Fascinating video and I agree that these three amps fundamentally changed the direction of popular music. That got me thinking of other examples and the one which leapt out is Laney primarily because on Tony Iommi. As I heard someone say, we can argue about whether heavy metal originated before Black Sabbath but no one can argue that it happened after them. I think other such as Boogie, 5150 and maybe Soldano advanced what was there but I don't think they had such a revolutionary effect. But as a sleeper we should also mention WEM. Page used them on the early days of Led Zep and who knows where we would be without that.

Great video Rhett! I loved your Hendrix jam! And you could olay more Beatles on that lush AC-30 all day and it would suit me!!! I've been following Zack for a while and I agree, his videos are full of incredible information! Keep it up, my friend! You are amazing in your content, delivery and musicianship!🎼🎶🎸

In Oz in the 70s we had Eminar amps.Through a couple of quad boxes they would go close to crippling you.

I'm not educated or skilled enough to even describe sound, but it's great that we have so many tools to help give a voice to the passion we have. For me, it's a P90s into an AC30. Why? No idea. It just sounds right to me. It has warmth, good breakup, and it's simple.

I have 5 AC30’s 3 Copper tops ‘62-‘63 1 Black top 6 input 1961 with EF86 mod added 1 Trapezoid Gray top Super Twin Black Top EF86. Most speakers are original Silver Bells, 2 original Blues, 2 reissue blue. Black top with EF 86 is chunky with early break up. Sounds amazing. 1 ‘63 combo with stock added top boost on back, has classic AC30 sounds with mid break up. Great all purpose amp, have gigged with it for years. 2 ‘63 head. Also stick added top boost on back. Gets distorted much earlier. Sounds amazing either clean or blasted. Sounds good with new Blues cabinet actually. 3 ‘62 more Chocolate colored top. Has an added top boost on back. Originally a non top boost. Needed a ton of replaced parts inside including new Mercury Magnets transformer. Probably sounds more like a new AC 30 would have back then with much brighter sound. I have grown to really like it. Sounds great on Shadows style guitar playing. You need Stanley FX Blue Nebula delay pedal to nail Hank Marvin tone. ‘65 Gray panel Twin in always too bright and has less of all the things I love about Vox tone. Recently I have used the ‘63 head into a Torpedo Captor X with the Celestion Blue 2x12 cab for recording👍👍. Hope this helps someone.

VOX AC 15 with the alnico blue is my favorite amp. I can play small gigs without a mic, and also enjoy some bedroom volume playing with it. still loud, but there are some tricks to get those tubes pumping without your neighbors feeling it. If I had to have just one amp, it might be the vox with a greenback though, more versatile.

Good video. I think you could make an argument for the early 1960’s Ampeg ReverbRocket as being a close fourth to these. It was the first amp to come with spring reverb onboard. Like the bassman, it came from the desire to handle more bass. Everett Hull, the designer (and upright bass and piano player) started out with a patent to build a microphone into the peg of the double bass (amp - peg) and as you mentioned with Fender and Marshall was really after a clean sound. Ampeg’s have a different but also musical breakup at high volumes. They were used more on the east coast studios but did figure in early surf music as well as some country and jazz staples. Ampeg is better known for their bass amps like the portaflex, but if you get a chance to play one of their early ReveebRockets - especially the ones with the 15” Jensen and 6V6’s, grab it. Very sweet clean sound with a lighter but musical break-up distortion

Great work Rhett! Gear exists to inspire players, so yeah, the music, people, and culture that we know would be unrecognizable without the amps you mentioned. I refer all my students to your page to learn more about tone. You're killin it brother. Happy New Year!

I own a very healthy, original 5F6-A, made in 1960. It came to me covered in black naugahyde complete with brass furniture tacks. I recovered it 20+ years ago and it has had very careful maintenance. It makes EVERY guitar sound good, clean or cranked up. Came with the more robust P12Q speakers rather than the P12R. The schematics floating around are wrong by the way. I've worked on many of these originals.

Rhett; I helped a friend of mine named Jim Elyea with his book: "Vox Amps: The JMI Years" all 864 pages! The Beatles used AC-15 twin's and then AC-30's and then for the 2nd U.K. LP(With The Beatles) they used the new AC-50 heads & cabinet(2x12 with a Midax horn) and those made the first trip to America for the Ed Sullivan shows. When they came back to America that Summer they had the new Vox AC-100's. But please try not to think of the first British LP as using AC-30 as Lennon was still using his AC-15 and George had an AC-30 with Top Boost added on..

Some big names used Sound City/Hylight/ Hiwatt to some reknown. Gilmour, Townsend, The Stones, Moody Blues, and others. I have a '74 SA 212 Custom signed by D. Reeves. It sounds unlike any other Hiwatt I've ever heard for some reason. Great amp.

Great video. I’m beginning to love amps, too thanks to you bro. Can you do a part 2 that covers: 1. Representative songs or albums for each of the three amps and 2. Comparisons of the modern versions (and maybe budget versions also) since the avg joe like myself can’t find or afford the vintage ones? Thank you

Really nice look at these iconic amps, Rhett. Would love to see you do a comparo with the new Quilter Superblocks that emulate these same amps. I have the UK and love it, but have no idea how close it really comes with the Marshall and Vox emulations. Happy New Year!
