I'm curious if there are any laws or rules that come into play when you have a KZbin video, versus an actual product page. There may be severe limits on who you can mention, can't hint at any sort of endorsement for sure. Artists and mostly their agents and lawyers will go crazy if their image is misrepresented. It's an awesome idea though, bundles of kit to go along with the videos. Top drawer marketing.

I similarly love my Katana 100, epic sound, can hang with drummers but can also use it @ 3am without getting arrested - and it was very inexpensive. I wonder how close they would have gotten using the boss compressor from the amp itself, might have to plug in the usb later and have a play.

Dont forget about pawn shops too, with common sense and a little knowing what you're looking at you can find pure gold and get a used QUALITY instrument really cheap. All 4 mexican strats I have were all bought for 250 or under one of them being a 60th anniversary red wine strat with all american hardware with Fender vintage noiseless pickups and the best feeling, playing, and sounding strat I played. I'd always recommend that over something new and cheap, you can find good amps too.

Great job guys. Of course, I could just listen to Rabea play like that all day through any grade of gear. I think this idea is worth continuing to do. My vision for what I would like in a "sounds like, for blank budget" series has always been more around the idea of someone getting the most out of a versatile rig and not so much building a rig for just one artists sound per video. Since I think what would be most beneficial to most players that need to stretch their dollars, ie most of us I'm thinking, would be a series that focused on building a rig with a lot of sounds in mind and choosing pedals and such that would cover the widest, yet still accurate, range of popular artist's sounds. I mean based on this video as a starting point you could branch into artists like SRV, Clapton, Hendrix, Frusciante, etc.. The ones requiring less accessories and tweaking would maybe just need some knob dialing, then ones a bit further out from there perhaps a pedal or two, and so on. That would be my ultimate guide for the budget guitarist.

Hi guys... LOVED the new approach. My suggestion for filling in the blank is: "For as little as possible" ! By that I mean not putting together the cheapest rig, which is what you did, but instead maybe by choosing a couple of price level of gear and then getting as close as possible to the artist tone with the least costly rig. You may do it for $350, but it might take $750. I think it will really highlight how good modeling amps have gotten, but will give people just starting out the hope for getting really affordable good tone! Thanks so much guys... Love the videos... Great idea - Katana is likely to be the go-to amp, but don't forget Marshall Code though... Although it's easy to see a Katana + Squire Bullet/Epiphone Special + mini pedals as the standard solution, there are loads of alternatives (including slightly better Squires/Epiphones). £500 budget is just right and brings this into the 'realistic proposition' category for lots of people.Idea of selling 'bundles' is also a winner.

love the budget stuff. I started off with a squire strat starter pack (guitar, amp, cable, picks etc). I quickly bought a different amp (Marshall MG40cfx) for dirt cheap, then gave the squire strat to my nephew. my strat now is a mim with Texas special pups. my "other" guitar is a LTD ec-401 with demarzio 36th pups. I'm strictly a home guitarist (no band, much less gig) so I'm thinking my next upgrade will be a better solid state or modeling amp. still figuring out what I want, but the Katanna's always sound great in your vids. I'd love the blues cube artist, but my talent (lack of) doesn't justify the $$. Any who, would have been nice to take the same amp and pedal vrs more expensive guitars. hard to quantify via youtube, but your honest opinions and reactions are always great

Love this premise of a Sound Like By Cheaping Out. But might I suggest that as this is basically first rig price range that you should include power & cables to the price to make it more challenging for you and more informative for the beginners looking for there first rigs. As an addition to that perhaps allow the inclusion of secondhand gear as people shopping in this price range will consider secondhand.

For the price of that rig, you could add a decent pickup or two to that strat. I doubt you want to get into modding gear, but a preloaded pickguard can be found cheap. I have MIM pickups in my bullet and it sounds great. It's more hands on, but that usually goes hand in hand with being on a budget.

I really think the best budget rig for beginner/intermediate/practising professional musicians is a digital rig now, with a decent Audio Interface and a desktop program like Bias Amp or Guitar Rig (I believe Line 6 is releasing a cheaper desktop model as well?). Honestly I think some of these companies would be really well served by taking the Boss Katana approach: Taking their digital amp modelling, throwing a few core settings (Clean, Crunch, Distortion) into a small amp with a built in guitar interface, able to plug it into your computer with some headphones and go nuts. The only downside to those programs is that they can be hard to set up if you have no idea about guitar tone or where to start, so having an idiotproof way to just connect it to your computer via USB and have presets would be a gamechanger for budget/beginner players. You'd sound so much better through that than through a tiny solid state practice amp with an 8 inch speaker like most of us started with.

The built-in OD on the Fender Rumble bass amps (super cheap) can get you pretty close.

And a compressor too, for an example for the middle part of Orion, preferably Boss CS-3 but maybe a tone city one if money is tight.

Thanks for taking this new approach. The sounds are remarkably good--especially on the intro to Shine On. There did seem to be a lack of bottom end and even midrange, though. Did you consider relying on the Katana's on-board compressor, and instead of putting money into an external pedal used that towards a Squier a step up in the range with better pickups?

It's your fault I now have the Wombats stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Oh well, Let's Dance To Joy Division! And Celebrate The IRONY!

Funny that it gets the wombats in your head and not Joy Division

I usually don't like the sound of that Katana amp, too top-heavy and the distortion is too harsh. But for some reason, in this case, it sounds absolutely awesome. That is something, for a the clean/crunch stage of solid-state amp. Is it the compressor that does it? I definitely should buy one, and that mooer one actually sounds good for the price.

This should be called "why you should buy a boss Katana". Not criticizing, I've played one and it's a damn great amp, for a budget it's a great choice

Wow what awesome value. I own an American strat, a vintage AC30 etc. That squier in to the katana sounds fantastic at the price point. You could absolutely gig that @ 50 watts too. The ceramic pickups are a bit harsher and less complex sounding than alnico but its more than good enough. Also worth mentioning that is an amazing practice rig: you can use all the built in fx to remove the need for a pedal board at home and you can presumably plug headphones in to the amp so you can practice when you want (3am beery power chords ftw). You can also wear out the frets on that Squier instead of your 2k Fender.. Just amazing value.
