There were a few moments where I felt that the NuTube version had a tiny bit more dynamic range on the high end but not enough to justify the price. On the other hand, it's going to take a certain amount of sales to bring down the price.

SRV switched from ts808 to TS9 when TS9 was released. He also used a TS10, which is not as iconic as 808 and ts9, and has not been re-released.

Yeah, every single time I hear someone say "the TS10 is the best" because they are a John Mayer fan, I have to bite my lip not to school them on the obvious: The TS808 and TS9 have been repaired and cloned more times than anyone can count so that doesn't say much for the TS10. You can spend $500 if you really want, but a Maxon OD-9 would be much cheaper and better than any of them.

I can hear that the 808 is battery operated rather than mains. It sounds like it as a Duracell battery in it, I find they give it a slight hump around 104hz

I disagree. Clearly sounds like an Energizer made in 2015, used in a flashlight for 3 hrs and placed in the pedal with the label side face down. After another deep listen, I think the guy on the left might have touched his tongue with it as well

I like the Nutube version! The "more" vibe in the new Nutube version kinda reminds me of OCD, I think they have the same-ish sustain saturation. I notice that in certain settings the new one also has more similar harmonic content between the attack & the sustain. It makes the attack sound thicker and more aggressive. I wonder if that's because of the tube dynamic characteristic that adds harmonic to louder sound like the attack. It's not necessarily better though if you want a classic sounding TS. I think I like the new one because I'm basically not a TS person. Will I buy the new one? No, I'm poor :))

I just got my first ever tube screamer a couple of weeks ago. It's a homemade clone of a TS9 that I swapped a 30 pound Behringer delay for, and it sounds amazing. Wonder how I ever lived without it, but I find it hard to imagine someone spending 200 quid on what's basically the same thing. I think maybe the whole pedal thing is beginning to get out of hand.

PD51 I agree that is their objective. But why pay more for the same tone? Why create a technology that drives up prices with no real benefit to the consumer. When these become cheaper that a tube screamer I will consider it. Is anyone even trying to consider the consumers perspective or do they think we all just buy new tech without thinking?

They can't become cheaper without the economies of scale and development of the technology, which requires actually building something and putting it on the market. It isn't nefarious unless they took the old pedals off the market right after producing the new one, without improving the price to performance ratio.

I love this channel, but they did a really crappy amp setup. Straight off they decided to plug into an *_already "screaming"_* tube amp they deemed as a base sound. No, a base amp sound is 'clean+ pick dynamics makes dirty'. * They instead were coming from the secondary use of the TS to tighten up a straight up distorted rhythm and lead tone. It's rare Sweetwater outdoes Anderton's, but they clearly did on this one. Just look for the Sweetwater review.

@@paulj0557tonehead well, Rob Chapman is part of it, so there's no real demonstration of the gear, just gain and widdly widdly woo. He's a solid player, but a horrible gear demonstrator. Lee and Pete are a FAR better demo combo.

I had a TS9 with a carvin tweed bel-air when I had a 62 reissue strat. I used it to add to the gain on the amp aka SRV.

Still got my TS9 from the early 80s. It has always been a joy. I think it cost me a fiver, second hand. The reason I got it was because I saw Chris Rea use one and his Strat sounded great. Soon afterwards, I sold my Les Paul and got an old Tele and the TS was just the right pedal for some cleanish drive/sustain/guts (combined with my MSX microamp). Love it!!! BTW, I used it with a Marshall 50W master vol combo.

Agree the nutube sounds similar to the other two. Lee - I was thinking the same as you, using the new gain knob you could tailor it to be either pedal, so 2 pedals in one. Expensive!!! Rather have the D&M drive :)

The price is definitely rather steep for what you're getting with that pedal. I think it sounds good but not *that* good. That JVM on the other hand just sounds stellar with or without the tube screamer. I hope you guys keep it in the demonstration room.

Regarding your comments about other guitar makers who have made iconic pedals, well Fender makes a phaser that has been in production since the 1970s . It has a great, classic phaser sound. I used to own one, and I used it all the time. I gave it to a good friend of mine and he loves it also.

Guys, the new knob on the NuTube Tubescreamer allows you to choose how much of the gain is coming from the tube or from the solid state circuit. You can have all the clipping coming from the NuTube, or turn it the other way and it behaves like a traditional 808.

Chappers, I think some might object that a already gainy amp will not show us much from the low gain pedal. That being said, if djent players use a ts for tone shaping, go for it. I think it might be too subtle for KZbin though. Entertainingly honest! Really liked this one.

I've got a few TS/TS-alike pedals. They all sound a lot closer to each other with higher gain/level - as found here at the start. With less level, closer to line level - and with less gain, used as a crunch rather than an OD I think they sounds more distinct.

Correction.. at 7:40.. that mix knob doesn't alter how much signal is going through the nu-tube, but rather how much of the distorted nu-tube signal is being blended with the original unaffected clean signal. Its merely a parallel blend knob ala "wet/dry". So if its set to center detent you are hearing 50% distorted signal and 50% dry signal, and so on.

to make this pedal justice, I think it would be nice to put this pedal through a cleaner amp where integrating a valve could be appreciated regarding dynamics in respect to the other diode clipping pedals. In an already driven valve amp the differences of course are going to be more subtle. Maybe even test them in a solid state clean amp so we can see if we feel the valve dynamics are there.

Check out the wampler pedals channel. He compares the TS9 to TS808 etc basically it all comes down to pots having different values. So that "brighter" or "more gain" from one is simply because the pots are different values so 12 oclock on one might be the same as 11 oclock on the other. Also, how ibanez thought putting a nutube into a pedal before going into 4 preamp tubes and it making any difference is beyond me.

I think the benefit of the nutube one is the mix knob. The ability to control how much of your clean signal is mixed with the tube screamer is a really cool feature. I don’t see why they need a mini tube for that though. I think if they just released a normal tube screamer with the mix knob I’d buy it.

I definitely like the Ts808 best. Seems to have the smoothest breakup and when used as a boost it juiced the original signal without adding too much of any one frequency. I am currently using a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, wonder how that would compare to the Ts808?

Could you guys review the new Deluxe versions of the Tube screamer please? The TS9DX and the TS808DX and the korg one? There's a load of comparison videos the TS9 and TS808 but these variants have no comparison videos at all. I would love to know the originals compare to the deluxe versions.

I love Andertons videos, but they really missed the point of what all this pedal does. If you want to watch a more helpful review I'd suggest the Sweetwater one. But when you use a pedal with expanded versatility the same way you used the old one, of course your going to get the same results. Hopefully Rob and Lee see this and do some more research into a pedal they wrote off without giving a fair chance.

The mix button is a mix button. Controls mix between dry and distorted signal. Hence nicer bottom end (which we can’t hear because it was eq’ed out like you would normally do when sound engineer records guitar but can’t be heard in room)

"Talk yourselves out of a sale" is spot on. I now know why my Maxon TS is nearly a neutral tool on the pedal board. At least to my ear the video shows no real difference and I can get some nasty tone and boost from any of the other pedals on my board. This was a great video!

Hey Captain, I think you got the little black knob wrong on the Nu-Tube TS, Sweetwater said in their video it allows you to add in more of the dry signal since Tube Screamers are known for still being able to hear part of the un-effected guitar signal, might want to check up in that and add a notation in this video if that is the case!

You should review Ibanez 2018 AZ series. Stainless steel frets, roasted necks, Seymour Duncan pickups and big steel trem block with titanium saddle... and they sound killer

There was definitely a difference, although it was extremely minor. Plus the switching between pedals was a bit too fast to fully absorb what each was doing differently.
