I just wanted to point out what a significant update this is. I was really disappointed with the organ sound ,,,particularly the rotary in my yc 73. This update has made it very playable and it sounds great with the band. And the new improvements in the velocity settings have dramatic effects on the sounds and how they play. Now I can have a super mellow Rhodes or one that totally bites and snarls. It’s like a completely different instrument and now I would not part ways with it. 👍

Yamaha is on the right track providing so much versatility at an attractive price, as compared to the Nord Stage 3, for example. However, IMO the settings navigation is outdated and lacks the intuitive factor. If they introduced an interface more like their Clavinova they would appeal to more people, I think. Also, I found the keybed action had an awkward un-natural feel to it as compared to the Nord or Roland PHA-50 or the Kawai. I have only played one YC at the music store so there may have been an issue there. Yamaha came so close IMO, but didn't quite cross the finish line.
@deancol40802 жыл бұрын
Hey James, could you elaborate about the awkward un-natural feel of the keybed? Is it clunky feeling? Is the action too heavy? too light? Do the keys rebound quickly or is it sluggish?
@lukejuby2 жыл бұрын
@@deancol4080 Depends which keyboard.... each version is different. 61 has waterfall type keys... they're much like my Hammond C3 keys, 73 has the Montage 88 keys and the 88 has the gorgeous CP88 keys.

@@deancol4080 It was heavy and had an odd transition point in the depressing of the key. I have a Nord Piano 5, Kawai MP11SE, and Roland RD-2000. All have smooth actions. So that is my frame of reference. I just found the YC felt awkward in comparison. I'm sure if I played it a lot I wouldn't notice so much, but playing it for the first time after years on my other keyboards I found it awkward and more difficult than it needed to be. I could see my fingers getting tired playing it a lot and especially up high between the black keys. You may not agree if you try for yourself.
@deancol40802 жыл бұрын
@@James-cn9no Thanks for your response. I purchased a CP73 a few years ago and it played the way you describe the YC73; heavy and awkward. I felt it to be sluggish, I tried to get used to it for about a week and I just couldn't, so I sent it back to candy store. From now on, if I have to get used to the action of a keyboard, then I'm not buying. I appreciate your insight and perspective, this will save me a lot of time and grief. I really prefer the keyboard action on my Casio PX S3000 (and it weighs nothing); just missing the great sounds from the YC.

Computer-based VIs are not ideal for live performance. Not only are their dynamics not made for stage (they have to be heavily tweaked, they’re more unreliable and have more latency than internal sounds. Also, people just prefer hardware. It’s a real, physical instrument. It’s not going away any time soon.
@ErraticFaith Жыл бұрын
Only to echo the reply to your comment; you have to realize that the instruments are looking toward live musicians. Most people at home (aside from those making rooms into studios of their own) lack the room for a rack of keyboards. So by the time you're at 88 most people are thinking of VST/PC/Controller. That's not the same for live bands, who are often looking for things like a performance keybed at a reasonable weight. A simple UI and accessibility. Easy to read in the dark without any needless excess and the list goes on in this area. When they are made -- they run the 'wants and needs' against live musicians and artists. Thus they feature in many adverts for the products and there's a huge gulf between them and the home user. The flagship feel keybed -- comes with weight and size. The very last thing I want to be lugging up the back stairs at a venue. 61 keys waterfall is the standard for Organ, albeit with tiers but for stage with other boards thats not always necessary. Result -- you're looking for a premium quality unit at all sizes. And yes, in the current world climate that is either cheap with a poor build (as some roland and korgs unfortunately have) or you pay a margin more. There is no 'bad agenda here'; you're paying what it's worth (my opinion from Japan).

@@DaraM73 The Mega Dive used a onboard Yamaha FM Chip (with several revisions to the circuitry in various models), in addition to the PSG it inherited from the Master System. The rep's comment about the Snes is incorrect because that used a sample based Sony sound chip (designed by Ken Kutaragi who designed the Playstation). Mario has never used FM sound but anything on the Mega Drive did. Most western Mega Drive games had poor sound because they used a bad middleware that converted midi into bad presets and the composers didn't know how to use FM properly (and even then their compositions werent very good for any sound source). Japanese games tended to sound better because they were more used to working with FM due to its availability on japanese computers and from arcade developemnt and often wrote their own custom sound drivers. Yuzo Koshiro developed his FM chops on his PC-8801 and ported his sounds from that to the Mega Drive for example.
