Absolutely. Whittaker - and this whole cast, really - feel real in a way that most of recent SW has not. We have only seen a handful of scenes with Saw, but his personal and political perspective is very clear, and what he says in this scene fits perfectly with his origins in the Clone Wars. This is an actor who studies their character, and takes it seriously regardless of the genre.

I would argue that Saw's few appearances in Rebels are proof of the different ideological factions within the alliance, except by that point most of the alliance had, well, allied. By the end of the show they have successfully built up the military fleet seen in A New Hope, and even the season 1 finale with the introduction of Ahsoka was when the many rebel cells began to organise together as a collective. Andor is years before that though, when most of these cells are in their infancy though (with the exception of a select few like Saw and those Separatists, who didn't stop fighting even when the Clone wars officially ended).

The flash of rage at 3:53 is terrific. Luthen hit a nerve and it shows. This is great acting and the silence as Saw has to compose himself is thick. Only to smile at the end, a attempt to hide just how angry he got. @M. The Partisans didnt elect Saw as their leader, they just align themselves with what he says and does, they dont have a central governing body or political backing. Saw isnt their sole voice either their are others amongst them that take initiative. Anarchy isnt about every person wandering about doing their own thing like smoothbrained koalas. Its important to note that the Partisans arent the idealistic Anarchist group. They use money, the ultimate form of control in out modern world. They kill civillians, sometimes on purpose. They dont care to change hearts or minds away from oppression and authority. They want to strike the deepest fear possible in every being that lives under the empire. In that sense, they themselves become and authority, albeit one of death and not of governance. The concept of Anarchy, if there is such a thing, is undone by attempts to define it. I myself have trouble defining it for myself.

This conversation was an interesting insight into what defines being a rebel. All these different factions that Saw lists have their “petty differences” and goals they wish to achieve but they all have on thing in common: the Empire is their enemy. It’s funny that Saw looks down on these other factions and claims he’s the only one with “clarity of purpose”, but isn’t willing to work with these other factions to achieve that purpose. Despite how lowly these factions, including Saw’s, think of each other, ironically, they’re all equal in the eyes of the Empire - to them, they’re all rebels.

Love the lines at 2:37 , it shows how just because the clone wars are over and theres a new rule doesnt mean all ideologies just died, there are still some very real people willing to fight for them

There certainly are successful movements relying at least in part on anarchist thought, Rojava and the Zapatistas immediately come to mind, but yes unfortunately being defined by what you are against without planning for what you will do once the dust settles is a common error in activist spaces, and many self-described anarchists who are more Pistols than Proudhon only get in the way of real change. Within Andor for example, something I found fascinating is how “clarity of thought” is a “strength”of both Saw and the Empire. Self-righteous pariahs unable to understand the greyness of politics are doomed to whittle their time away until they die alone or lose the spirit of resistance.

Both actors have had amazing scenes over their time in show business, but this is a prime example where they bring out something extra when confronted by similar greatness of craft. Whitaker is killing this role, and sharing scenes with Stelan can only make it better.

Anarchy is a halfbaked mindset. It's like lighting candles on a birthday cake and then never blowing them out until the wax is all melted on the icing.
@Sophie-mv7bd

@@MonstersNotUnderTheBed Some people confuse poetry and analogy for insight. As if saying something that seems insightful makes it so. An analogy such as “leaving candles on a cake and never blowing them out” implies that the issue with anarchism is a failure to follow through. A belief that anarchists act without a plan. This demonstrates a failure of understanding of what anarchism is. A failure of understanding anarchist history. And a failure to understand anarchist practices. As such, you are ignorant of the subject they feel so comfortable speaking on. As many people do specifically for anarchism. They have become complacent in their intellectual curiosity and have refused to learn what anarchism actually is due to a misplaced self-confidence that tells them they know all they need from the anti-anarchist propaganda that had over the years become cemented into public understanding.

I related to this a lot. I'm an actual anarchist mix of anarcho-syndicalist and synthesis anarchist. And people always say anarchists should just work with other communists, socialists, Marxists, Marxist leninists, maoists or whatever and we are all like no. I get that they don't like capitalism just like we don't but they want to install a authoritarian state. I don't want the us to become china or stalinist Russia so why would I ever want to work with them. They historically have killed anarchists after they win. The red army worked with the black army to fight the white army. Once the white army had been defeated they betrayed and murdered the black army in Russia. They did the same I Spain and China. They would here as well. So who you fight with and why you fight matters a lot!

It's simply amazing when you realize the pieces of the rebel alliance are essentially leftovers from the clone wars. At one point they fought each other until a greater evil, the galactic empire took control. And now they're forcing a situation where is they have to find a way to work together in order to overthrow a tyrant and yet still just as fragile.

I just realised, Luthen has acquired more stolen equipment from Steergard, the same place Cassian took the Starpath unit from. I wonder if he always had them, or if he took Cassian's advice and sent some other thief in with a uniform and a toolkit, taking them out from under the Empire's nose

Saw's right, though-most of those groups rebelling against the Empire don't know what they're doing. It feels like if the Empire disappeared tomorrow, groups like the Ghorman Front, the Partisan Alliance, the Separatists, New Republicans, Human Cultists, Galaxy Partitionists, and Saw's anarchists would all be at each other's throats. The New Republicans obviously won at the end, though.

Recently just found myself drifting back and rewatching a bunch of these clips. No doubt, I will resub to Disney+ eventually just to rewatch the series in full. This is an absolute gem, and easily the best Star Wars put out since the original trilogy. I just hope they don't make Luthen a jedi. I hope to god almighty that they stick with the narrative that he's using this eccentric bourgeois trader front to hide the seething, heartless rebel that's willing to sacrifice any piece on the board to further his ultimately altruistic goal of saving the galaxy from the empire. It doesn't need to be more. This series has thrived BECAUSE it didn't rely on using jedi or lightsabers.
