Andor portrays the Empire like it should be. We see how brutal and evil it can be but at the same time it's humanized. We see that it's just not faceless Stormtroopers comitting atrocities. The Empire is driven by real humans, which makes it so much more scary and real

yh, Obi wan, and mando just made the empire comic bad, and me and my mates had a good chat about mando and we agreed its over rated af. The actual characters are good but the show just has too much stupid shit in it, Stormtroopers are dumb af, and ffs we have to get grogu in S3 So smooth brains can claps and laugh at funny baby.

So refreshing to see a take on the founding of the Rebellion that isn't based entirely in "haha Stormtroopers go brrrrrr," like Rebels was. You know this show is great when even secondary characters like Nemik and Kino that were in just three episodes each become so beloved by the viewers, much in part thanks to their great performances. I also love that despite the show having a darker and grittier tone, still maintains the core themes of star wars about hope, because the show makes us so used to being in this overwhelmingly dark, dangerous and oppressive environment through out most of the story, that makes the few hopeful and heroic moments being all the more powerful and special to the viewer, which creates a deeper contrast between light and dark due to the darkness being more explicit here, instead of remaining static in one of the two the whole story, it's a very effective, yet very underrated writing device that The Batman also used.

I don’t hear people praising Cassian’s childhood scenes-however these scenes were particularly well conceived, directed, filmed and acted. The language is so natural and authentic, the kid actors deliver their performances so believably. Kudos to the decision not to include subtitles, because doing so only highlighted the superb acting. Also-the inclusion of the Republic ship with a Separatist sigil reveals hints to a backstory that the writers have fleshed out but purposefully kept quiet. I think this was a good choice, the clone wars were a complex history, leaving our curiosity unsatisfied only adds to the realism while not distracting from the show’s narrative.

After The Mandalorian, I can't take Star Wars fans seriously anymore when they claim anything is filler. Brief segments of world-building in Andor are filler but entire episodes of side quests in Mandalorian aren't filler? If Andor is only 6 episodes when we edit down to only the things that pertain to the main plot, a season of the Mandalorian given the same treatment would be like 3 episodes and a half. The fandom is devoid of logic. And I don't even agree with 6 episodes being the runtime of only the Andor main plot. 10 episodes is my estimate, and that's allowing for subplots introduced last minute in the season finale that doesn't have immediate payoff like Perrin gambling. If we edit down further than this, the main plot will become incoherent.

I LOVED Andor It's probably my favourite show of the year so far, followed really closely by House of the Dragon. It might actually be in my top 2 shows ever (1st one being Arcane, hopeully season 2 drops in 2023) I've been a huge star wars fan since I was like, 5 or 6 years old, and this universe really has been a part of my childhood. Seeing Rogue ONe in theatres in 2016 really brought that sensor of realism that Star Wars always lacked (that was mostly filled in by comics and novels, but nothing as far as movies go), and I was eager to see more of that put on a screen. I had doubts at first (seeing Book of Boba Fett and Obi Wan... and the inability of Mando to really create hype for the viewer without a big cameo or name drop, especially in season 2), but then I was hooked in the first few minutes of the first episode, just by the visuals and the soundtrack, and then the overall tone of the show (Cassian actually kills two corpo cops in cold blood in the first 10 minutes). On that particular thing, it's very similar to Arcane that had huge boots to fill but managed to grab my attention in the first 3/5 minutes. But when Arcane is a really fast paced show, Andor takes things a LOT slower and really that's for the best. I loved how well the dialogue were written, how immaculate the cinematography was and the themes that were put on the table thoughout the first season. I can't wait for season two, and it seems that the time frame is going to be really close to HotD as well, so we're gonna have a lot of episodes to watch again at the end of 2024 :) (technically, I started HotD late August, then switched to Andor once the first season ended, giving me one episode per week to watch from late August to late November. Not bad lol)

Thank you for posting this video! I saw that Andor had come out a while ago, but, like the Book of Boba Fett, I decided not to watch it because I wasn't going to let Star Wars get me again. However, upon seeing that you posted this video, I decided to give it a watch. I was absolutely blown away. My favorite part of this had to do with the details that went into the running of the Empire and the Rebellion. We get details on the bureaucratic structure of the Empire and it comes across as an actual state with all its complexities rather than a mob of blind guys in helmets. As for the rebellion, it's portrayed not as a mob of moral paragons who blow stuff up for a living but as a loose coalition of agents and warbands going up against a massive challenge. Another thing you didn't mention is that in this show, the threat of the Empire is demonstrated by forcing the rebels to make tough, near amoral choices to live to fight another day. It adds a whole new layer of complexity to the conflict.

0:31 Andor IS a magnum opus that will blow your socks off: it's just that people are too accustomed to shows that have a flashy action sequence every episode. Andor takes the time necessary to build up the stakes so that when the action arrives, it truly means something.

Minor correction: Magnum Opus is defined as a "large and important work of art, music, or literature, especially one regarded as the most important work of an artist or writer". The show is indeed a Magnum Opus, due to Tony Gilroy being involved in the creation of Rogue One (wrote the screen play), making it a rather "large" work (two seasons and a movie). He also set out with the intent of making this story a game changer, and succeeded, thus "important". For better or worse, people have tried to 'wash their mouths' of House of Cards, not because it isn't brilliant, but due to Kevin Spacey; thus leaving Andor to take the mantle as Tony's most "important" work. The story of a Magnum Opus needn't technically be grand in scope.

Stellan Skarsgard's monologue in the 2nd to last episode was EPIC. Wow. This series is outstanding. I hope Disney sees what's worked here (the realism, character building) and lets it percolate through the rest of the Star Wars franchise. Extremely unlikely, but one can still hope.

It took me until Christmas Vacation when I had time to kill before I gave this series a chance, but now I'm working on my third viewing. It's like a precious thing to hold and cherish now. Because the show was so underappreciated and not really marketed well at all, all of us fans are having this same experience of 'discovering' it and thinking it's something special of our own, perhaps sort of underground, and we're acting like we're part of a growing movement behind it (sort of like being in the Rebellion itself, if you think about it!).

Agree! Andor is great! I think this show is much more important than people think. It shows us the horror of Totalitarianism and Imperialism. And how it operates. I am Ukrainian and watching the show at the moment really meant a lot to me, because I couldn't help, but compare it with what is going on in the world and Russian war and oppression against us. Before this war I thought that Star Wars is just a story, mainly about Jedi against Sith. But now I see all political patterns, fight against tyranny, fight for freedom. I understand it! I feel it! War is no longer something that I only saw in the movies, it's something that deeply traumatized me and now my biggest fear is Totalitarianism. It is really well shown in the show and made me very emotional. We all have to stand strong and united. Freedom is very fragile and we need not to be "asleep", as Maarva said on her funeral, because it may slip away, while we don't pay attention and close our eyes to certain things. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.

Yes ! Yes ! After the catastrophic industrial accidents that were Boba Fett and Kenobi it was really hard to be hyped about anything Star Wars. But, as I loved Rogue One (the only valid SW film in the Disney era IMO), I knew an Andor project was underway and I latched onto this and hoped for something good. Man, I was not disappointed ! As I watch reviews and analysis my love for the show grows even more. This is a real work of televisual art, not some crappy commercial content devoid of meaning or even sense (like Kenobi). The only reproach I have is that it is over and we have to wait two years.

Another thing is how self-contained the show is. There’s no characters being brought in from other Star Wars spinoffs to crowd please. If a viewer had never watched the Star Wars movies but had an idea of Star Wars’ general premise, they could comfortably get by watching this movie, also because of the slower pace and the thorough world building. And the themes of authority and rebellion are so well developed. I could seriously listen for days to Luthen talking about his plans to spark rebellion through oppression or to Karis talk about his manifesto detailing what fighting oppression really means. The Empire is also really well fleshed out by the crime management sectors and the more law-and-order mentality, as opposed to brutal violence and oppression for their own sake. And I was definitely not expecting the whole arc of the prison-industrial complex, but it was superb and a surprisingly relevant comment to today’s prisons. I’m glad to be able to critically enjoy a Star Wars spinoff without merely seeing it as comfort food for a Star Wars nerd. Andor has really earned my respect as a show in its own right.

Andor being a spy thriller at the ground level, the human and day-to-day level, is exactly what Star Wars needed. Exploring the rest of the star wars universe like this is SO badly needed, because there's a lot of stuff that's cool besides just Jedi and Sith.

Who woulda thought. Get a quality showrunner and cast with solid backgrounds and what do we get? No injecting their self-image, no squandering of the budget, no forced exposition with boring flashbacks. What made me really appreciate this who was as I was watching, at times, I got lumps in my throat, I had that "just one more episode" feeling, I was having...feels...FOR A STAR WARS SHOW. For example, and there are many, when Andor gets arrested and sent to a prison, I was like oh here we go, we're gonna be in here until the end of the season, but the pacing was "chef's kiss." Just long enough so that the new characters we were introduced to have enough time to bond with the audience, and the inevitable escape was done with such an unexpectedly powerful payoff. It was practically a Shawshank Redemption on a mass scale in such a tight amount of time. How hard would that be to pull off, and it worked. One other thing, this show actually has a lesbian couple. You know why it's not mentioned by anyone? Because the story's vision, writing, acting are the focus, and it shows. I can understand this take on Star Wars might not be for everyone, but for those who look for the meat and potatoes to be in character development, this has to strike a chord.

This series came out of left field and was one of the best I had ever watched. Part of it is that I loved its novel, down with the grunts approach to sci-fi, expanding what was typically associated only with cyberpunk, part of it is that I personally love stories of tyranny and revolution, part of it is that it just is a damn good production and part of it is how unexpected it was. I am afraid about what its connection with star wars, a franchise I consider mediocre at best, will do to it in future, but for now colour me delighted.

I've never been a Star Wars guy. I'm old and saw this in it's second weekend in the theatre back in '77. My fave movie of that year was Close Encounters. I've seen all the movies and it just felt like they mostly leant into the 40's matinee serial stuff and didn't care about realism. Rogue One was the first blip on the EKG. They were trying to actually build a world beyond laser swords. And then there was this. You could have no idea who Mon Mothma was, or even know there were laser swords, and this would still be compelling TV. The prison stuff with Serkis I'd put up with any prison break movie. Everybody seemed to have been told that they were the lead because all the characters felt like they had lives outside of the frame. This was a very good show. To think I was gonna skip this like the other SW shows, until harassed to watch it by a co worker.

This show is completely unlike the rest of Star Wars, and that's what makes it so good. The format of a simple, fantasy-like space adventure only works for so long, and desperately clutching to what is known to work is the major flaw of the new era of Star Wars. I would honestly be so happy if they focused more on these types of stories that places a greater role on character development and expands upon the worlds politics and society. It would rekindle the Star Wars fan in me that hasn't been around since I was a kid
