And it makes it SO much more real, you know? Like not all heroes are these multi-talented people. A lot of them just have good hearts. It makes sense for a person in this position, who has been in prison for a good chunk of time, to not have the ability to be able to swim! It's so pathetic and humbling and all that jazz, and THAT is what makes it heartbreaking and so raw and beautiful. Swimming is something most people know how to do, you know? But it's so completely understandable as to why people like him WOULDN'T know how to do such a thing! UGH! I love this show so deeply.

One of the things I noticed early on is how Cassian and Syril are foils of each other in many ways. One of the things here is that Cassian knows himself. He knows he's not the leader, but he knows he can do that supporting role 110%. Meanwhile Syril has no idea of who he is.

It's a better story if Kino doesn't make it out. Kino even said he was already dead. If you think about, he knew the only way they could escape involved swimming. He wasn't trying to escape, he was trying to get everyone else out. Those men were his responsibility. That's why he's smiling as they all are jumping out, when he says "I can't swim" the second time. The later reaction is him fully realizing he's not going to make it. Kino's "one way out" was death.

Sacrificing a few to save a security secret that can help more people was what the Allies had to deal with once they cracked the ENIGMA code in WW2. They couldn't just hunt down all the U-Boats and save the Allied cargo crew ships. They had to let most U-Boats alone to keep the German High Command from getting suspicious. It was a brutal choice.

Well this is the second time when a character portrayed by Andy Serkis gets sent to a prison, forced to live in single-aisle quarters with guards who like to zap the inmates who appear similar to one another, giving them slop to sustain themselves. Kino/Caesar then becomes aggravated after a fellow inmate dies, and when he realizes that everyone in there is stuck forever. Kin-er then becomes the leader of the breakout, using a genius plan that involves surprising the guards after acting normal, water, scaring, trapping and zap-killing the guards, rallying the breakout behind a cry like 'No' or 'One way out', leading to them climbing to the top of the prison and jump over the edge. Smeagol: Why that's how we escaped Barad-Dur, precious!

Letting innocents die, putting their loved ones in dangerous situations. Luthen is willing to do that so that no one else has to make that sacrifice. He understands that others will see that sacrifice and say that he was cruel and an extremist. He does it so others won't have to make that choice. Just think, between this series and Rogue One, of the sheer number of people -that we know about- who sacrificed everything to get Luke to that trench in the Death Star, where he could make that one shot into the exhaust tube. It's unbelievable.

I knew you guys were going to have the best reaction of them all to this episode, and I was not disappointed. The writing on this series is next level. Both Kino and Luthen had amazing monologues here and the final scene with the prison, with the swimmers swimming away in the thousands had me in tears. We never saw Kino's actual fate so there is always hope that we will see him again!

So, I know this is a bit late, but the music in the intro hasn't been speeding up. But they HAVE changed it every episode each arc a little different, each time adding more complexity and depth to it, incorporating instruments unique to that arc, and by the end is this rich and full song. It's in parallel with the building of tension happening in the story itself. It's awesome.

Another awesome reaction, guys! Speaking for myself, this has become my favourite Star Wars project, movie or TV series. Yes, there are no Jedi or the Force or light sabers, and I love those things as well and love seeing those elements when they show up, but the sheer level of intrigue, world building and understanding we get as to how the Empire works, why they're so evil, and why there needs to be a rebellion is second to none here in all of SW movies and shows. And that's the stuff that just sucks me in. The writers, directors and actors of Andor really know how to ratchet up the tension.

They broke the Star Wars mould with this show and allowed it to be something beyond the constraints of its past, and in doing so making it grounded in an everyman reality. Everyone is painted in shades of grey. I think it compliments the era it is set really well. Hope has been brushed under the carpet and there are no Jedi saviours. It is up to the people of the Galaxy to make a stand. The Force is on a hard reset ready to show itself again but in the meantime we have this cold stark reality. It's must see Star Wars in my opinion. Written to perfection and acted out of the park! It seems those who love it really are passionate about it and those who don't feel the same in their dislike. The division is real. I just hope we get the promised second season. It would be a true crime if the voices of the naysayers had an impact on its future. It needs its conclusion!

I'm starting to hear more and more that this show is The Wire in the star wars universe. I've said this myself from day one. It is exactly that type of show. These are real people, reacting to real things in real ways, just set in a sci fi universe. It is tremendous. I could watch a million of these, as well done as this is. It's the best star wars ever. It also holds true the dystopian themes that GL set up from the beginning. It's simply a star wars story with epic realism rather than pandering to younger ages. It's so good.

My favorite part about this series is how it’s painting the rebellion not as “the good guys” but the “bad guys who are almost as bad as the empire-almost. Just bad enough that the Empire is still just that hair worse”. It’s such a refreshingly dark take.
@foulrot

I don't think it's painting the rebellion as "bad guys" it's showing that sadly rebellion has a very high cost and it's usually paid in bodies.
@awlabrador

No, I don't see the rebellion as variants of bad guys. I think Luthen is just pointing out that "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." It makes the whole idea of the rebellion and its birth seem that much more realistic.

Serkis and Skarsgård's monologues are AMAZING, but Skarsgård's gave me chills. Luthen knows what it takes to make a Rebellion survive. While I'm a major Empire fan, seeing Kino on that platform saying he can't swim brought a tear to my eye and had me yelling at my TV , "you better fucking make it". The Mon Mothma scenes were good and I wonder if Mon will give up her her daughter for this rebellion.

Awesome reaction guys. Pet theory is that Skarsgards character came up with this plan 15yrs ago, a year after the Empire took over, a year after Padme died... I think he could be her Father. Also i think the blonde ISB woman is the daughter of the main ISB man, based on a few earlier comments. Andor and his mum, stellan and Mon's cousin, Its like a mini theme of parental figures navigating their way thru rebellion while supporting/moulding the younger generation. Passing on the hope while infusing with the hardness required for the times. Themes of regret and determination and the hope that theres a part of their soul left, if they ever succeed.

My Theory: Luthen is a formerJedi (as much as I love a SW show without Jedi) and he is "Using the tools of his enemy to defeat his enemy" means acting like a Sith to defeat the Sith. Playing both sides, multiple angles of attack but lying to them all and willing to sacrifice them all for his goal.

So after I watch this yesterday, I've been counting down the minutes to see your guys's reactions. And I want to say it's exactly how I thought it would be. I knew both of you guys would find the final breakout. Just superbly done and the writing for the characters again. Just magnificent. Two things pop in my mind. Won the gangster talking to the senator because you know he wants a way in to be more legitimate and that's why he wants to introduce his son to her daughter. But the other thing is if you think about rogue One and how they talk about, they were falling behind in the building of the Death Star. This could be one of the reasons why? Because if these prisons are what they're using to build components to it. If this happened then it does put a damper in their timeline.
