There's totally nothing special about that XD Find a country where they don't stand for the anthem and show respect for the flag. I mean, just really, that's not a Dutch nor German nor Swedish nor Polish nor Russian nor American thing, that's just completely normal guys. In Poland we stand for the national anthem, for Rota, for Boże coś Polskę, for Z dawna Polski Tyś Królową, for Gaude Mater Polonia and for Bogurodzica. We even stand for a Christmas carol called Bóg się rodzi. And as far as I know the Brits also stand for Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, I Vow to Thee My Country etc. That's quite a common practice everywhere. Btw Wilhelmus is a very specific anthem when it comes to the lyrics, but its music is epic.

My Grandfather was part of the Canadian Army that helped liberate the Kingdom of the Netherlands during ww2. He had a grade 10 education but could speak 4 languages including Dutch. We played this anthem at his funeral. lang leve de koning! R.I.P Gramps 🇳🇱🇨🇦

I am Japanese. I remember Antonius Geesink from Dutch National Anthem. He was the first olympic champion of Judo open weight division in 1964. It means he was the strongest judo player in the world. So many Japanese judokas respect him !

As a US Air Force officer while serving in Europe, my wife and I stood in the main square in Amsterdam as people gathered to celebrate Liberation Day. I remember the queen coming out of the her building and walking right past where I stood. She was followed by WWII veterans of the British and American armies who liberated the Netherlands. She gave a moving speech. But the thing I recall the most is the playing of the Dutch National Anthem. I was moved by its beauty. I turned to a stranger next to me who was Dutch and told him I thought the Dutch anthem was very beautiful. His face lit up and he smiled from ear to ear and thanked me for my kindness. He was very proud at that moment.

My brother and I were hitch-hiking through the Netherlands (we wore our Scout rucksacks on which was the word Canada and our flag)............as we came to a city centre where a great crowd was assembled without knowing that they were celebrating Dutch freedom from the Nazis.......as we hiked along.....the crowd went suddenly silent and then parted to let us through......then someone spotted our flags and the word Canada and the crowd went nuts......people rushed toward us clapping and singing.....and we were literally swept up by the crowd and propelled along as the centre of attraction.......we were hugged and kissed and welcomed by everyone......it turned out that a Canadian regiment had freed the city during the war and everyone thought we were young soldier wearing Scout military pattern rucksacks......what a reception we were given.....!

You must understand that the winter of '45 was really horrible for the still occupied parts beyond the rivers. The USA didn't really care to liberate us, they were after the war industry of Germany to get their grubby hands on the advancements made by the Germans in several technologies. If it weren't for the Canadians liberating us, we would have suffered even more because the USA would have taken their sweet time with Germany first.

To be historically accurate it's actually some delightfully brazen propaganda for William of Orange who was a very wiley politician and - despite what we like to think today-initially didn't want independance from Spain. Only when it became politically expedient for him did he become the great leader of the Dutch revolt. Still a beautiful anthem!

One of the best anthem. It's so unique and the lyrics are amazing. It's in William The Silent's perspective, and how he has felt loyalty to his land and his people, and even though he has been loyal to the King of Spain, but because of the persecution and rights not given to the Dutch people, he then turns against them. From the royal's favourite to an enemy. The anthem has a very emotional message and tune resonating to a deep wound or a yearning to one's fatherland, and God - in which William of Nassau wants to rely on and all he ever wanted to do. Me too. I'm Dutch, I love the melody but the lyrics are as beautiful. The anthem sings of William of Orange, who led the uprising against the Spanish king who then cruelly oppressed it. This war would last 80 years and William wouldn't see its end. But the fire he started never went out, his sons followed in his footsteps and after a long war, the Dutch were finally free.

It tells a story. It's not an anthem about wow look our country is beautiful. It's deeper then that. Way deeper. The whole anthem is an homage to all those who fought for our freedom, and those of other nations in the Eighty Years War.

have to disagree about melody but the lyrics of Wilhelmus are most meaningful even more than the American one (I'm American). Best melody I'd have to say is the German anthem (at least some brass versions of it are incredible).

I am Indonesian. But my father was a dutch naval officer. After Indonesian independence he chose to be integrated in the Indonesian navy because his family resided in Indonesia at the time. His family was of the local nobility, that is the reason he could become a dutch naval officer. The grave of his grandfather still mentions that he , the grand father, is a Regent, meaning a local baron accepted by the dutch colonial government to run their business. Upon independence because of the knowledge of my father regarding dutch naval business, he was appointed to run Indonesian naval business building on his knowledge regarding dutch technique My father was stationed in The Netherlands therefor and I was sent to a dutch school. and just mingled with my dutch schoolmates. In school I was taught the dutch national anthem. I must say I liked the melody. I knew just only the dutch national anthem and still until this day I am emotional when the dutch national anthem is played. I have some kind of chemistry I think. If you want to rationalize this, the dutch recognized they could dominate the population in the Indies only if they dominated the nobility on the many Indonesian isles. This they did and to their advantage. Anyway, although am Indonesian I still like to hear the Dutch national anthem. It brings back many memories.The Indonesian national anthem is nice too however, and I like to hear it, but for me personally it has less emotion because of what I mentioned before.Anyway I respect both Indonesia and The Netherlands. Indonesia has the right to be independent, but the Dutch need not be ashamed. They did bad things but according to the time spirit. Any way my great grand fathers accepted the rule so who I am to judge they were wrong?

I first heard this anthem in a movie "The Hiding Place" The family in the film was gathered around a radio listening to Queen Wilhelmina saying "the lights have gone out over a free Holland" Then the anthem was played and they all stood up.

I have listened now for the fifth time this beautiful beautiful anthem. I have not yet acquired it's translation, but it moves me to tears each time I've heard it. I stand in pride of those wonderful Dutch people, and what they do each year for the British and American soldiers who fought and died during operation Market Garden. I love them. John D. Johnston.

Translation is as Follows: Wilhelmus of Nassau, am I of German(ic) Blood? I shall stay true to the fatherland till my death. I the prince of orange am utterly fearless. The King of spain I have always honored. Rough translation because the original text is in "Diets" which is 16th century Dutch, and a lot of dutch people likely dont even know what the sentence "Den prinsche van oranje, ben ik, vrij onverveerd" (I the prince of orange am utterly fearless.) actually means.

Bob Shank Jr I'm so proud to be an American of Dutch heritage. My maternal ninth great grandfather and grandmother came from Haarlem in the 1630's. They were two of the first two hundred inhabitants of New Amsterdam. They were ancestors to President Martin (Marten) Van Buren and to both Presidents Roosevelt. After exhausting my research on my Van Deusen ancestors, I decided to learn the Dutch language. Having to teach myself, it's a slow go, but I won't give up.

I have a German/Dutch heritage myself ('Shank' in German means 'long legged' - and myself, my father and my brothers are as well). Stay with your studies! It's a gorgeous tune. Odd words for a national anthem even mentioning a foreign monarch. The US anthem is also historical in theme and the UK anthem is to their monarch. Both are grand. This tune is just plain lovely. It is Reiu's homeland so he plays it with great reverence. But then he plays the anthem of all nations he plays in and always with great respect. Thanks for posting
