This has been an extremely slow year from Sony, but at least I can finally share a reliable rumor about one of the next Alpha Full Frame cameras. Two trusted sources confirmed:
The Sony A7V will be on market between January and March 2025!

I have an A7IV. I love this camera but it needs 4k60 NO CROP, 4k120 (likely to have a crop but I’m fine with that), a stacked sensor would be great to help with the rolling shutter. I’m fine with 33mp but even a bump to 40mp would be cool. My biggest gripe is how hot it gets when filming video. They need to implement an internal fan like the LUMIX S5 II. However I HIGHLY doubt they will.

There's no way to make a fast camera with the same sensor ! With it 1/15 s readout, action AF is terrible and video possibilities limited. 1/60 s (like R6ii and Z6iii) is required to make it good, 1/160 (like A9) to make it great.

The problem with a new generation of cameras is ... the last gen was so good it seems way too early to be bringing out anything new. What are they gonna do for an a75? Itll be 6k 4k120 no crop at best and literally everything else will be the same so basically an a7s3 with a74 iso . which is great don't get me wrong and probably great for Gyroflow stabilization with 6k to work with. But I think this next generation is going to be one to skip unless you're buying an open gate fx monster. The lenses might get pretty funky though what with all the competition

There is a tons of improvements they can do on A7IV. If they just put A7IV sensor into A7RV body and give it few functions that A7RV had it will be already significant improvement: 1) multi-axis LCD movement. The flipout design is horrible for anyone who isnt using camera for video and specifically for self-recording. For photography its almost on par with fixed LCD screen, so the worst you can get. A7RV had great design in that sense. Not the best for photography (that would go to Pentax K1), but generally most universal and useful. 2) AI AF - faster, more reliable, less interruptions in tracking by random obstructions of subject, more subject detection options 3) 8-stops stabilization 4) Better EVF 5) pixel shift (not that significant, but still nice to have feature for some situations, for example in macrophotography of still objects in studio) 6) focus shift (or how they call that function for automatical capture on different focus plane for focus stacking) There is a room for a set of significant improvements over that: 1) if they come up with new, better sensor (I doubt it, but if they bring up something with ISO performance of A7IV but resolution and dynamic range of A7RIII that would be amazing). 2) both SD card slots supporting UHS II 3) pre-capture 4) GPS module 5) pixel shift images processed in camera and many more...

If they want to keep those shiny features for A9 and A1, just add those 10 fps pre-capture and I am in heaven.

My mistake, its A7III that didnt :) CF express would be nice feature, but again, would have to be both slots, otherwise in backup to card 2 mode it doesnt make sense (would be slowed to SD speeds anyway)

I told at least 12 times, here and on the rumour page....same mp, with the ai specs and 4 k 60 standard no crop, body of a7r5 for better heat dissipation and screen of a7r 5!!! and 2 cf-a (of that i'm not sure 100% and higher price 2799...you responded no chance...now watch me smile when they announce it...

Same slow ass sensor of the A7IV would be a major flop. I feel like Sony will fall behind on the entry level FF cameras if they don't introduce some sort of stacked technology to the A7V, given that the Z6iii already has a partially stacked sensor and the rumored R6iii may end up with the R3 stacked sensor. I remember after Sony released the A9iii Andreas said stacked sensors will become standard in entry level FF cameras. I was very skeptical but it's already happening. What I'd also really like to see is the 15fps limitation on 3rd party lenses.

Pretty sure Sony will keep the sensor like it is... The old A9II still sells for €5300 and it has just a 24MP stacked sensor. Introducing a 33MP stacked sensor "budget" camera with AI recognition, a better flip screen etc would logically be more expensive than the current budget camera's of around €2000. Sony made a mess with all of these camera lines so their budget camera's will always be worse than the competitors. Only their top models are better.

@@jeroenvdw the A9ii definitely isn't worth 5k+ anymore, it sells for 2.5k on the used market, for example on MBP. Still you're right, all of these lines are a mess. They are killing their most popular series. But sadly many people will probably just accept the slow sensor. The A7IV is still very successful. The Z6iii has a faster sensor. But the autofocus especially with animals is way worse. No good cheap options on the market rn

The a7IV stabilization is the worst I’ve ever seen. The video footage is shaky and rolling shutter is awful. It’s unusable for video, IMO. If Sony fixes the rolling shutter and improves stabilization, I’ll buy an a7V.

I think the a7IV stabilization is much worse than the a7iii. I see a lot of a7iii footage and it doesn’t look bad. The a7IV, I get dizzy every time I see a7IV footage. The a7IV is the worst video stabilization and rolling shutter I’ve ever seen on any camera ever.

@@tonyortizc21 Rolling shutter is the same on a7iv as a7iii. It's high but a lot of cameras have high rolling shutter. Idk if they improved the IBIS but the ibis certainly is not worse than the a7iii. A7iv adds digital stabilisation which is very effective but a bit robotic with a lot of motion.

Thx Andrea, good news, I have had my A74 almost 3 yrs now , got it early than most through a friend and it has been a great camera and the firmware updates have been helpful, the rolling shutter is bit of a hindrance when shooting any bird or high speed sports, with the intro of a partially stacked sensor like the Z6iii has that would take care of the rolling shutter issue, a new faster AF tracking would be nice, Sony will most likely just use the existing AI system , a 4K60 uncropped would be great, 4K120 isn't needed for this camera, anyone needing this will be using the A7R5 or A1,33 mps is plenty this doesn't need to change, people want all these changes and this will reflect itself in price and all this will not be cheap, anyone that i have done video work for has never complained about the 4K60 i have shot for them, 20FPS raw would be nice then again ,we will wait and see, I have never had my A74 over heat on me shooting video of any kind, owners have be innovative, if you need there are silent mini fans available online for this camera, just look for them 👍

Thanks for that, as I've owned the A7iii since it was launched I am very keen to learn about the A7V, especially if it will be carrying over the same shutter mechanism that the A7iii and A7iv have? Having experienced a shutter failure it would put me off the A7V and I would be more inclined to buy the A7RV. Any ideas about the A7V shutter mechanism? I know it is not a feature often talked about like frame rates and pixel count, but it's still an important part of the decision!

Glad to hear speed is a priority on the a7V. I would have preferred the IV to keep the 24mp and have a faster sensor readout, instead of jumping up to 33mp. A hybrid camera with that much rolling shutter really limits its usefulness

I hope thats not the case. If we can see anything based on Z6III its that partially stacked sensor have even worse image quality than fully stacked sensors, which is already significantly worse than regular BSI. What I would love to see is some new BSI sensor, 42 (or even better 45)MPx with simmilar image quality to A7RIII or D850 and low light performance closer to A7IV. I wouldnt be even against if they would use the same sensor as is in A7RIII.
