The month of October 2021 was marked by one of the largest hacks in entertainment, with Twitch being the target of a series of leaks by 4Chan. Payout information from all of the top Twitch streamers made its way into the public eye and Twitter went crazy. Do Twitch streamers earn too much? Is the backlash against creators like Hasanabi (aka Hasan Piker), CriticalRole, xQC, Pokimane, TFUE, Amouranth and the rest, justified? Or is this simply an irrational response? Let's take a closer look!

The earnings wasn't a big deal for me, a big deal for me was revealing that Twitch has indeed played favorites when it comes to bans and moderation. The leak revealed that several early accounts were basically on a "don't touch" list due to popularity and the amount of revenue they make for the site, there were also several moderators. The leak is old information with old numbers and it suggests the list no longer exists, but it reveals what a lot of people have already been saying: that Twitch can and will play favorites meaning popular creators can break as many rules as they want, and it is not out of the realm of possibility for the website to go back to this and simply create a new Don't Touch list, if they haven't already
@zacharyperlee4179
@zacharyperlee4179 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, the favorites list would definitely be a bigger concern to me, even if its old data, that shows that people suspected of being a favorite of twitch (Like alinity) might actually have proof behind it, and the possibility of more twitch leaks might mean we could get to see a more current "do not ban" list of twitch,

Any idea that twitch didn't/doesn't play favorites are from people who tend to be in denial over other very obvious things. That's been very clear since early on, as some of these top creators have gotten away with a lot of things that other, smaller content creators have gotten suspended or banned for.

I don't think twitch is actually that profitable for Amazon. I'm pretty sure most Amazon's revenue and profits are from AWS and small online retail markets they have monopolized. Obviously, in general Amazon and Jeff Bezos are making a ton of money but the main cause of that is the fact they are able to avoid so many taxes. For Jeff thanks to loopholes and for Amazon mainly through government incentives supposedly to reward creating jobs.

It's a difficult thing to judge because it depends on a lot of circumstances, not to mention the potential debate of "greed vs ambition". On one hand, streamers and content creators don't decide how much they get paid. If our videos do well, we get paid for them. If we want to expand on that by taking in sponsors, selling merch or establishing a personal brand for ourselves, that can't be considered a bad thing either (unless we're taking sponsors for like I dunno killing babies) because money is out there and creators take it under the mindset of if we don't, someone else will. I suppose it might be seen as a dick move to start a gofund me for something when you can easily fund that ambition out of your own pocket, but once again it's not necessarily exploitation. I don't think criticalrole is necessarily wrong to go crowdfunding because their viewers want to support the channel. So even if there are streamers making millions and millions of dollars a year that's just the fruits of their labor and unlike multibillion dollar companies who literally abuse their workers, they're not doing anything to extort or harm their audience. So it's difficult to really draw a line on "oh you make TOO much money you're a bad person!" because money is a byproduct of content creation.
@scrittle

You can't exactly say creators don't get promised a payout, because neither do small businesses, it isn't something unique to them. KZbinrs and Twitch streamers jump onto trends all the time to secure themselves a profit, and small businesses usually do something of a similar nature too, so it goes without saying that money is NOT a byproduct of content creation, because money IS the product.

That's a deeper problem of society than just streamers. Most wealthy people do similar tax evasion strategies. A lot of it is legal and a lot of the time it is much worse. I recommend reading about the Pandora Papers and the Pro publica leaks if you want too see how wide scale it really is.

biggest reason is that people tend to form parasocial relationships with their favorite content creators and when its revealed that the streamers are not like the viewers, they (the viewers) feel betrayed by their creator
@percabethlumity

I honestly don't get those people. I get the parasocial relationships, hell I indulge in those all the time because they're fun (ofc I make sure not to be weird or break boundaries but pretending a streamer is your friend/relating to content on a personal level is just more enjoyable for me). But ppl gotta have some common sense. These streamers don't know us and never will, and what they put online will always only be a fraction of their full person. It's like separating fiction from reality when reading books/watching movies. You enjoy the fiction and "believe" in it for fun but you don't actually think it's true and get mad when someone says Narnia isn't real.

I had gotten into an argument with a friend when this leak came out. She was on the side of being pissed that those streamers made so much. I told her that the majority of the creators had done a lot of work in the background to get where they are now. She insisted that it couldn't possibly nearly as much work as she's doing now, working fulltime and going to school. I told her that if it's that easy then she should start streaming and build a following. She complained about how she would never have time to do it and had to focus on other things. That was my point. The majority of streamers either have to find some sort of balance with their work/school life and streaming while some just take a leap of faith, quitting work/school and doing streaming fulltime in hopes they can make a living off it. Eventually the truth came out that my friend was envious of them to be able to work from home and do something they're super passionate in. I can relate to that, but I'm not going to be angry or hate those creators for doing something I wish I had the confidence of doing.

I think the streamers who don't beg for subs and donos and don't pretend to be for the people or pretend not to be rich are fine. Especially if they put effort into their content. imo it completely depends on how much money we're talking about, since there is a limit when u have "too" much money, especially if u hoard it when it could be used to to help lesser fortunate people, charities, funding other peoples dreams, help saving the enviroment and so on. For example, I doubt not a lot will disagree with me here, people like Jeff Bezos reached that limit long ago, imagine how many trees among other things he could plant to help our current enviroment, how many homeless people he could manage to get a home for, how many flawed cities infrastructure he could improve. Especially the poorer countries where schools is a thing only the lucky have access to. In reality at one point, ur so rich you won't ever have to worry about money, and you'll never be able to spend it all, I mean hell, to give you an idea of this, Jeff got enough money to give every single person in the world 23 dollars *each*, while there are people who have trouble even getting food and clean water, let alone a roof over their heads. TL:DR it's less about how much money a lot of these people have, and more how they choose to spend them, look at Mr Beast whose universally loved, but also has a lot of money. If u have the ability to help people and change their lives, when the cost of it would be comparable to pennies for you, there is no real excuse as why u shouldn't do it.

Out of the few streamers that actually make it, I can guarantee that most have not had a difficult journey getting to the point where they can just stream full time. So, when they find success fairly quickly and with almost no risk, how do you expect them to be "relatable" to regular folk?

@Juju2927

The main reason many got angry against streamers I think is because one of the most attractive aspect streamers build on to get popularity is "relatability". They make sure that their audience think "Hey, this guy's like me, I feel the need to support them.". Therefore, realizing that someone you consider equal ends up being WAY richer than they "let it appear", you feel betrayed and lied to. This situation is really a "case by case". If the ones earning money do use it to be productive (such as critical Role) or to donate it as much as possible, then they're fine for many since they use the money they earned for their job / others. However, if this money is used on themselves, or worst, if they kept on pretending they needed the money while they add plenty, they're doomed to get a backlash for hypocrisy or liability. In the end, everyone is free to do what they want with their earning, sure, but they have to handle the "expectations" of people. Funniest thing about this however is that the people who complain the loudest are the ones who didn't participate in the donations in any form.

I think many creators get more than they deserve. Don't get me wrong: I know there is a lot of hard work behind it and i worked a long time together with streamers to create a unique experience. But it is somehow like mobile games - a few of them are successfull because they are good, but most of them are successfull, because they use abusive techniques. And of course - this is somehow socially accepted, because everybody does this. If you look at Ads, these are 99% psychology, 1% product quality. If you look at small streamers, which put a lot of work into their setup, working hard on their road to partner - the quality of their content is most of the time much better than the stuff you see in the top 10. But they don't get viewers, because a) the system in twitch is abusive(you get more attention the bigger you are) and the streamers use abusive psychology to trick you to stay there. A friend of mine once said a true word: You will never become a millionaire quickly if you want to keep your moral integrity and/or act legally. So... I actually don't care that much. It is a little bit sad, but this is not exclusive to streamers. They do work hard and they deserve some equivalent amount. But do they work harder than - let's say a nurse? I don't think so. Nurses won't give you a link for a sketchy website only for fans. Nurses won't use psychology for you to come back soon or even stay. They earn their money by hard work - often 16 or more hours a day. There is no way a streamer should earn more. You can interpret this as "Nurses earn too little" or "Streamers earning too much". Either way i think this is unfair. Of course the topic is difficult with big teams like in the case of "Critical Role". But that is unusual. Even a big streamer usually has a tiny team up to 5 or 10 people. Of course you need a lot of money to support big shows, with a lot of people working there in TV production quality. But i don't think this should be on twitch. Seriously. Not because i hate it - i love them. But twitch should be a platform for all - not for people who raisefunded millions of bucks to get the equipment to produce such stuff. In my opinion this is more a youtube-thing.(While even this is questionable) It is not about envy. I actually don't care if somebody is richer than me - there are so many people who are richer than me i don't think my body can produce enough envy to serve them all. But i see people who are struggeling to support their livings and work harder than i do and especially harder than streamers which hire(and pay) me to do their stuff in the background. They don't have the convinience to be able to use abusive psychologic tricks to make their customers come back. They can't hire somebody to do a big part of their job. Of course you can say: This counts for many jobs! - and you might be right. There are a lot of people which earn less than they deserve. That's the point. There are only a few people which earn way more than they deserve and a lot of people which earn less than they deserve. So you can put the income of everybody who deserves more up, which will result in a higher income for the ones which doesn't deserve it and is at least questionable to be paid, or you can tax the "undeserved" income higher, so you can pay a higher income to hte ones which deserve it. Whatever. I think most of them earn too much.

I don’t think that people earning money is nearly as bad as Twitter likes to make it out to be. People earning money isn’t anyone’s business. But appearing to act like you don’t make money to make more money is a bit of an ethical dilemma.

For those that do not know, in the leak was also revealed a "no ban" list Essentially, if a specific creator does something that would normally result in a ban, they get a second chance or a mild punishement before they get actually banned (which might explain why some streamers who do weird shit always get back so soon) I thought that this would be in the video, but im not complaining, its as good it as always is

It's not 5 out of 10,000 people that earn a minimum wage. Almost all of the creators on that list have diverse content across multiple platforms as well as brand deals and sponsorships that provide the large majority of their income that aren't even mentioned in that video you referenced, or in the data leak. Yes, the number of streamers who make a minimum wage is still astronomically low, but not as low as 5 in 10,000.

Personally as a small art streamer, making my first few hundred dollars was fun, but it is HARD So seeing people making 1k, 3k, 10k, 100k or even 1mil is something because it was probably even harder for them. Sure some may have a natural charm, interesting points of view, or be unique/quirky in an appealing way, but I'm sure they started out at part time/internships doing 3 hour streams when they weren't tired. I would like to make $15k as soon as I turn on my stream, but to do that I actually have to grow a presence and be consistent in streaming (and I haven't streamed since like a year ago) People give these streamers their money and support when they can and when earnings are revealed they feel betrayed? I don't get it. They're able to make that much because they gunned for it. Devine Nash was right- you could stream for 12 hours and make $0 doing it. You just make a sore butt, tired eyes, and slight envy for people who are able to make money from watching YT. But these streamers stuck to their guns and it paid off for them. Not to sound like a "bootlicker" or whatever, but for a job that literally doesn't pay you anything and counts on people's generosity, sticking yo your guns is all you can do, really.

Not going to lie. I did fall into the pitfall of such envy after I learned how some of these people (the majority of them I had no idea about except Critical Role and even then I've only HEARD of them but never engaged) seemed to be making bucko bucks for something that at the time I viewed as so simple that I could do it, so therefore why don't I have bucko bucks? Before I began my journey to seriously commit to this KZbin thing, and it more or less was a passing thought with half assed attempts a few years ago, I remember seeing a creator on the rise who I became envious over. It almost seemed like their 'success', however you wish to define it and for me at the time their sub count, felt undeserved. Years later, I've come to terms that this kind of thinking is very counterproductive to you as a creator and seeing the "grand total" of numbers without understanding the breakdown can really affect you. As I've stated before I glanced at the leaked numbers and won't deny I felt a bit bitter, but I also recognized that sort of thinking really held me back before so I needed to drop it, and move on. I had to tell myself that I don't have all the sides of the story, and if it bugs me so much then that in turn means I would need to dedicate time to really research the facts, crunch numbers, all that jazz in order to fundamentally understand what do these numbers all mean/entail. Or. Decide I would rather do something else that to me feels more productive than that. With that being said, thank you so much Andrei for breaking this down in a manner I can understand as well as giving those plaguing thoughts that tend to linger some closure. 😊

I think it is hard to accept in a way when a small channel or something along those lines gains more and more success essentially becoming what feels like a disingenuous company, especially lets say if you were there from the beginning, the connection between you and the creators feels fake, as if your just a number to them despite the years of support

i don't think people are envious. what is unfair is that a person earns so much money, accepts donations on top of that while they are already a millionaire, attacks "wealthy" people while they are these "wealthy" people, and give 0 back to the community. if only the top 0.1% of these creators make so much money, why do they not give back to smaller streamers who make no money? why dont they donate all their donations to a good cause? people are angry cause they were fed an illusion.
@victorcates9330
@victorcates9330 2 жыл бұрын
Introducing it as "envy" rigs the discussion. I think it's useful to consider variation. Some wealthy people are despised, while others are seems as likeable or humble. If it were just envy, you'd likely get a consistent hatred. There are different factors that seem to impact the level of animosity. Hated is likely to be more profound when the successful are seen as having won a rigged game or power becomes entrenched. By contrast, someone who does well can be highly loved and respected if they give back to their community or act graciously. If it were just envy, you'd probably hate people MORE who were wealthy and seemed like nice unaffected, respected people.
