P.S. Casual users, 256GB might just be enough for you honestly. The cool thing is that no matter what, you have the alternative to go get yourself some more storage. (& Avoid voiding your warranty)

It should definitely be enough (as long as you get an external drive)! I’m still editing videos on my base model M1 MacBook Air. I eventually want a M4 Pro but you are tempting me to get this thing instead and save the money. Hopefully my other comments didn’t post cause it was loading and they just say the same thing😅

people in youtube videos saying "mac mini base model isnt really for heavy tasks like editing just simple browsing emails..." brother i edit in a 200 dollar laptop 8gb ram, intel i3, cant even handle a messaging app open plus a yt video playing. My point is yea the mac mini might not be the best to edit on but for the price its amazing even if you arent getting a pro experience

I have a MacBook Air M1 and I regret it. Got freezes for a second every day in the browser or finder. That’s weird 1000$ laptop has that. I will never buy MacOS device. I also plan switch to Windows and get Pixel. I watch this brand through years and they all the time make scam products with low value. 256GB is a circus for base products where cheap laptops have 512GB. Generally I don’t care about pendrive or disks, I want my things inside the MacMini hard drive. Next year they’ll add 16 gigs to MacBook Airs.. revolution.

Hello, Andres!!! I’ve been following your videos for about 5-6 months now, and to say the least, I am impressed by the way you work, explain, and never mislead anyone about what to buy or not to buy. Today, I got a Mac Mini M4, but I went for the version with 24GB RAM, and I don’t think I made a mistake. The truth is, I was initially planning to get the base model, but after watching your video, I decided to spend a bit more on the RAM. Best regards!!! 🙏🏻

Hi! In DaVinci Resolve, it's possible to set up path mapping between Mac and PC. Just last week, I configured it on our work computers, and everything works perfectly. You can do this in the Preferences > Media Storage > Mapped Mounts menu. On the PC, you set the Mac path (e.g., /Volumes/Project_Files, and on the Mac, you specify the PC path (D:\Project_Files). Greetings from Ukraine! Wishing you success in your creative endeavors!

Andres, hi! I want to share another recommendation regarding setting up DaVinci for working on a project across multiple PCs. Maybe you already know this, or maybe not. If you set the Working Folders (proxy, cache, gallery) on a server instead of locally, settings like Magic Mask should be preserved when opening the project on different computers. Your videos are amazing. Thank you!

Much respect to you @andresvidosa this was a superb video. As a programmer myself I very much appreciate reviewing the m4 mini with software engineering in mind instead of video editing and photography. I am sick to death of watching reviews that talk about how efficient Final Cut Pro is and video export times are and timeline scrubbing. I don’t care about this. I do care however about the performance of docker containers, LLMs, VMs and other developer tools presented in your video. This is the first video I’ve seen so far with this perspective. The rest of it to me is irrelevant noise that is not worth sitting through.

Man, the M4 Mac Mini is such an attractive value proposition, but there are some hard realities about the compromises with the base model. Your video does a great job highlighting the limitations of the puny 256GB SSD, even with the seemingly straightforward external workaround. It also shows how the 16GB RAM configuration is much more susceptible to memory pressure, especially as more Apple Intelligence features make their way into macOS. That said, I’d love to see you do a video pushing the base model Mac Mini Pro to its limits. There aren’t nearly as many videos on the Mac Mini Pro, and the base model offers a very compelling price point for those looking for a smoother, more capable future-proof system without jumping to the M4 Max level.

@@chuckaeronutI’m a noob to this whole pc shit. What do you mean virtual memory? RAM right? Also I’m hows he running Xcode and stressing it without the thermals going crazy on a base M4 Mac mini?
@chuckaeronut
@chuckaeronut 2 ай бұрын
@@usmxn21 Hey no worries, we're all n00bs in all areas except the ones we've already poured ourselves into! "Virtual memory" is the term which describes the practice of using free space on your main long-term storage (usually an SSD, but prior, a hard disk) as if it were additional RAM. It's a lot slower than real RAM, but it allows you to keep programs open and running if you have run out of RAM, by swapping the less-used stuff in your RAM to the slow "virtual memory" in order to be able to load new more immediately important stuff into RAM. Other names which refer to the same thing are "swap" or "paging", and the location on disk is often referred to as a "swapfile" or "page file". Many operating systems, macOS included, can only use the disk they booted up from for virtual memory, so when Andres (the video publisher) used his 256 GB SSD (quite small) and filled it up with files (leaving very little extra space), there wasn't a lot of room left to use as this overflow space for RAM. When he opened and ran all of those programs and Chrome tabs, he used up all his RAM, then also used up all the free space on his internal SSD for virtual memory, too. Without any additional space anywhere to start anything new, any one random small thing starting up could have ended up being the straw that broke the camel's back... and eventually, one was! Using the much larger external SSD as the boot drive would enable all that room to be used as virtual memory if need be/ While it wouldn't be nearly as fast as having the physical real RAM, it would indeed have allowed running all those programs (and more) without crashing hard and having to reboot. Maybe he wouldn't have liked the performance, but fast SSD storage does seem to do a pretty good job at serving as virtual memory these days. To answer your second question about how he's able to stress his base M4 Mac mini so much without it overheating, well, there are lots of incredibly talented engineers at Apple who did an insanely good job making sure it's both power-efficient (less power = less heat created) and easily able to cool itself using outside air. Furthermore, the base M4 is actually less likely to get hot inside the Mac mini enclosure than the M4 Pro is. The M4 Pro easily draws twice the power of the base M4 at full load, but the small enclosures of the Mac mini, including the openings for the fan to circulate air, are all the same. So, if anything, the fact that it's a base M4 is an advantage, at least when it comes to thermals. It's not as fast as the M4 Pro, but at its fastest, it makes proportionally less heat, while the Mac mini case was designed to be able to accommodate the heat output of the M4 Pro without overheating.

I would recommend 24 GB ram for any semi-professional user. For example if you are a software developer and you want to run virtualization or heavy docker usage and have allot of multitasking going on with lots of tabs open and applications open at the same time. Otherwise 16 GB will be enough. I went for 512 GB ssd option and not 256 GB as many recommend. Whatever options you choose it will be a good value I believe. This configuration that I choose was about 100 euros cheaper then my previous computer I bought about 5 years ago and had 16 GB ram and 256 ssd storage. So I feel I got more for my money this time around with the Apple Mac mini M4. The small computer variants with windows are not much cheaper these days unfortunately.

I would recommend booting your entire macOS off your external storage. It's slightly faster, but importantly, it's much bigger, and as macOS will only swap to the startup volume, you'll have massively more free space to use as virtual memory to be able to abuse the machine as you have been. I'm quite convinced that you won't have any hard limits to what you can get away with RAM-wise while running like this. Obviously it's not as fast as real RAM, but it should get the job done. I'm considering booting my M4 mini off of a RAID0 of two external NVMe drives each on their own USB4/TB4 bus, which should make swap performance excellent.
@jazzaugustin7479

does this mean you want to use the 256gb as ram?
@chuckaeronut
@chuckaeronut 2 ай бұрын
@@jazzaugustin7479 OP's problem is that he filled up his small 256 GB boot drive so it had very little free space left, and then maxed out his RAM and forced his mini to use that tiny bit of free space as virtual memory. It wasn't enough! If he had booted off of the larger external storage, it would have a lot more free space, allowing him to get away with his abusive usage with only some performance costs instead of any failures. Thing is, macOS can only use the startup volume for virtual memory (swap space), so the more, the merrier. It's stuck using whatever you booted from as a substitute for extra RAM, so no, the 256 GB internal SSD would be pretty useless, while everything happens off the external.

People said that Apple Intelligence won’t be available if you do this, is this true ??

@@Wilkinss Ah yeah, I have no idea actually! I read the same thing a couple days ago, but I'm about to try. I have an M4 mini as a server and won't be needing Apple Intelligence on it, but I'll try it. I'm receiving my SSDs today to boot it on a RAID0 of two 2TB SSDs in enclosures on two different TB4 buses. Will be a neat setup and insanely capable for the overall price, but we'll see if Apple Intelligence works!

Great video I use Final Cut on the iPad, but just upgraded my old Mac mini to this model and did the same with the external. Doubt I’ll stress it as much as you. lol

Nice vid. As cool as I think the Minis are... I can't shake that I just prefer self-built PCs for desktops lol. It's held up for me for like a decade plus - MacBook Pro + gaming PC is just the ultimate combo, letting each platform do what it does best. As for benchmarks... personally, I think good, well-established, well-documented benchmarks (ie. Geekbench) have their place. They aren't meaningless at all, but, I also think one shouldn't over-interpret the results either. The real-world tests are where you actually add value as a tech reviewer.

I told you on Instagram earlier this week but it's INSANE how this absolutely smokes my 2018 fully loaded Macbook Pro. It's mind blowing how fast tech evolves lol. In your opinion, is the M4 Pro Upgrade worth it or eh? I've been thinking of fully replacing my Pro with it

Very early on the video, I noticed you complained with the power button. How about you use WOL via phone? If you have the Mac Mini on Ethernet, you can do it locally!

This is pretty nice, i'm thinking about buying the base model as well.. Could you test if it works with a 3 monitor setup? I've seen people online doing it using a thunderbolt to hdmi cable from a donble.

Man, I love the new form factor. If only I had waited last year on it 😭 That UGREEN enclosure works great between Mac and PC btw. I popped in a Lexar NM750 for my enclosure and no hiccups between gaming and graphic design on it.

You could try a rack system of 4 to 6 Mac Minis in top spec most likely no issues then

You got some water damage on your ceiling - it would suck for a pipe or something to burst and destroy all that fancy tech you got there.
