Yeah, that explains soooo much. I still can’t imagine how it feels to legitimately be traumatised by something on the internet. Unless they maybe discover bestgore at age 60, but pictures? Sad though
@TheKinety

I was gonna say the same thing. Being a part of early generation of the internet. We learned how to navigate a lot of these hoaxes and traumatic troll posting. Like scam emails/calls are a billion dollar industry cause elderly fall for it so often. Hell, I'm still extremely paranoid of clicking links. We would trick people into seeing some of the weirdest or fucked up shit as a prank. So a lot of us pioneers of the internet are jaded by the trauma dumping like Q does, and see it for what it is. A hoax. I remember seeing Jacking Chan/Undertaker die a million times on early facebook.
@Wallasmod
@Wallasmod Жыл бұрын
@@aClownBaby- Also, it’s not limited to gore. Older folks have been getting exposed to religious conspiracies and/or planetary alignments that signal the coming of Christ or another being. This is the type of stuff my friends and I were exposed to on the internet when we were like 10 years old. So it will take some time (hopefully not long) before older folks realize that not everything on the internet is true.

My dad retired and I guess that gave him a lot of time on the internet. He's massively into things like QAnon and I'm certain it's from being traumatised by stuff he's seen online. It's super irrational, definitely emotionally driven.
@mookX92
@mookX92 Жыл бұрын
Trauma is without a doubt a real thing but these days it's used in so many occasions just like the word genius. It's being stripped down and hollowed out from its original meaning. Being traumatized on a micro level from seeing pictures is just a lazy way of saying that person was shocked and left a deep impression.

The talk about projection was particularly interesting, especially in light of the recent allegations. Honestly I don't know anything about this Andrew guy and I have no real investment in him. I just recently heard about him because I saw a psychologist react to his apology video. I hope the victims get justice. This entire conversation did have some really good points though: finding some empathy in people being brainwashed and preyed upon with culture wars (especially old, media illiterate people and young children caught up in the beliefs of their parents). Thinking more about the isolation in western society. And how there does seem to be so much projection within these political communities, I would assume because a lot of these people do not go through enough healing, introspection, or loads of therapy to help process trauma or be challenged in their beliefs. Interesting Also this country needs better health and mental health care so bad. Like not saying that would magically fix so many of our problems... but like let's just fuck around and find out??

I loved your discussion on the importance of empathy in all of this. Like you mention, I think that it’s important for us to take a step back and recognize that we are products of our environments and that social reinforcers shape/determine our behavior (can’t also forget the role in which neurobiology influences behavior). As someone who got their phd in behavioral neuroscience, I don’t believe in free will. I personally believe that our tendency to ascribe free will as the cause of behavior, leads us to ignore the contingencies which actually select it. This ultimately prevents us from practicing empathy and reduces the likelihood of helping and communicating with others who we label as “wrong” or “amoral”. At the end of the day, there aren’t bad people, just bad environments and/or abnormal neurobiological functioning.

What Will is talking about with regards to Joe Rogan is called pragmatic implicature and it's what misinformation pundits exploit ALL the time. Basically not outright stating something but heavily/vaguely implying it.

You gotta be kidding me. He felt extremely out of place, interruptet a lot, hasnt watched the docu, laughing at all the wrong places, said some really weird shit. Here is one quote he said; "The problem is not that kids are consuming sex - but that we make them feel like there should be guilt about it" - Will Neff

Dudes, I'm from AZ! My boyfriend family is killing me! On Christmas, his sister gave their step mom an Alex Jones book... Then, when I watched Andrew's documentary and saw Alex Jones supplement line, one of the bottles looks too familiar... sure enough, my bf sister has also gifted him one of AJs testosterone supplements! I had previously told him that he didn't need testosterone. We are 27, and if anything, you should see a doctor before taking it. The moment I saw it was an Alex Jones supplement and not FDA approved, that shit went straight in the trash! 😩 Helps me...
