I read an article that said that we as human beings aren’t emotionally wired to receive as much news and information as we are getting today. It said that throughout time, we only received news about our little village or region, and that increased with newspapers to be our nation, and somewhat, the world. Only recently have we been inundated with news and information from all over the globe about many horrific events. We as humans cannot psychologically withstand so much horror, violence, and suffering. We cannot process it. And this leads to feeling hopeless, weak, fearful, helpless, vulnerable, and angry. The article recommended that we limit how much news outside of our community we consume.

I was about to say exactly the same thing. With the internet at our fingertips and the 24/7 news cycle, if we didn't screen out most of the suffering that we are exposed to day-in, day-out, we'd be plunged into deep depression and struggle to get out of bed in the morning.
@jeannemara16005 ай бұрын
@pennylando3145 That absolutely happened to me after 9/11. I watched it on TV in real time, and I get the chills, even just writing this, when I think of that day. I finally had to stop thinking, talking or watching news, about it. I was sobbing all the time, lost weight I could not afford to lose, and became suicidal. Lesson learned. But I can get that way when watching programs about the concentration camps in WWII, or children harmed,other animals harmed etc. It breaks my heart. The older I get, the more I am likely to react in an empathetic manner.

Having been through a similar experience 11 years ago this week, I empathise. I found that I 'came out the other side' of it after 7 years, and the entire experience has definitely changed my sensitivity to pain and suffering. You are wise to limit your exposure to such things; it is better by far to focus on joy and positivity whenever you can - and it isn't burying your head in the sand. It's simply making a more positive choice. By raising your focus, you bring receptive people up with you, rather than joining others empathetically in their suffering, which does neither them or you much good. Good luck💕

The problem with the test is that if someone is a pathological liar, they are likely to lie when answering the questions.

Enjoyed this discussion. About empathy for distant disasters: for me it is that we don’t need to know about every tragedy, we aren’t meant to have that much unhappiness heaped on us. In my 88 years one of the many changes has been the ability to know about them all, all day and all night. The channels have to fill the time with something to make money. With the knowledge of so many the mind can become innured to suffering, or corruption etc. or one can get depressed or one can join a useless protest that offers no solutions but just more problems.

Fascinating and lively convo between you two. There is a difference between a sociopath and psychopath. Dr Robert Hare is renowned for his Psychopathy checklist test as brought up by Shauna. His book, "Without Conscience" is worth a read. Andrew is right to say that Psychopathy is a spectrum disorder as is Sociopathy. Sociopaths have a conscience, albeit a weak one, and will often justify something they know to be wrong. By contrast, psychopaths will believe that their actions are justified and feel no remorse for any harm done.

Hey Shauna , I absolutely adore you and Andrew…what a great interview, so interesting. I also love HG…not because he is a psychopath, but because he is so bloody funny… the start of his videos where he plays the Harry and megsy Netflix music, has her squeezing bananas and him yelping as a ginger poodle…cracks me up every time, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. Plus he is just hilarious in how he recounts the behaviour of Haz and Megs…LOL

Great interview with Andrew. Congrats to him on his recent marriage. As clinician with many years training and experience, a cautionary note he’s an investigative journalist and not an expert on psychopathy, sociopathy etc. Nice guy no doubt, and actually will pick up his book out of interest.

Great interview Shauna, we can always rely on you for fantastic discussion videos. HG is doing an "In Conversation with" series where he's interviewing other KZbinrs. It's a very different to when he lets others interview him, as Andrew here described. He's asked for his viewers to suggest/request who he should interview in the future and I suggested you as I think it would be an incredible discussion (especially after hearing his first "in conversation"), and promote your channel so well at the same time. If you're reluctant, have a look at the first one he's done with Sue Smith to get a feel of what happens and I think you'll enjoy it and be more amiable to the suggestion of letting him interview you. I believe he's about to release his second one with the Sidley Twins tonight Australian time 1am Monday AEST so that one will be worth listening to as well. Basically I think you and HG in discussion would just so fantastic, and be an outstanding video. I'm writing this in the hope you see it as HG asked that we help facilitate discussion between him and our suggested person, I think as he knows some may have the wrong impression and be a bit scared to do it. Anyway, Shauna, see what you think. I'd be so keen to hear an conversation with HG and you. He seems to like us Aussies and having a conversation with an Australian would provide some contrast to the Brits and Americans that will probably dominate his "In conversation" series.

EXCELLENT INTERVIEW!! 🙌 Andrew - I started following you from here in Arizona, USA just before you launched Heretics and have been hooked on that channel from day one. I own a logistics company and am a US Customs Broker. International trade is my career and its human capital cost is my passion. I have the same view about trade as Robbie has about performing. To withhold trade, or performing, in Robbie's case, is to silence our inner humanity compass.

I read, so not sure if true, that James Fallon's family line included seven alleged murderers, including Lizzie Borden. His reason for not being violent or a serial killer was that his childhood was stable, normal and happy. He was highly functional and intelligent, extremely competitive and a high achiever. Some of these people add value to society so, should we be weeding them out completely? Can we differentiate between a violent and non violent psychopath from a brain scan? RIP James Fallon. Great podcast.

Love HG Tudor's channel, and yes his accent slips occasionally, in how he pronounces book as buck and other instances of double 'o' sounds - still enjoy listening to him.

HG Tudor is exactly what he claims to be...which is his "charm" and value. I got a little caught up in thinking he wasn't as bad as he says he is for a stretch - that is only dangerous to me as I then lose the importance in his discussions!

15:44 I totally agree with this, Shauna. This is why I avoid everything about the war between Israel and Palestine. There is nothing I can do about it, so I don't want to be confronted with all the horrors humans can inflict upon one another. 😢

They’ve been fighting each other for over 2,000 years, nothing that we say or do is going to change anything. None of the countries surrounding them want to be involved, so the best thing for us, is that we don’t get involved either, I might sound cynical, but self preservation is key.
