Sounds like they planned on pushing this narrative before the podcast started and he kinda slipped up and gave away the fact that he was supposed to talk about this at some point. At least 5 people connected to Epstein have been on Joe's podcast and I'm sure more that we don't know about. Epstein was into eugenics and spy software and that's why he was connected to the scientific community. This guy is just pushing a cover story.

As a PhD student I totally agree. It's sad, but true. We would rather have someone wire us $1M than have to write NSF funding proposal. That $1M would go to hire more students and buy more equipment for the lab. Unfortunately, funding is one of the reasons many scientists are moving to industry.

@RichardHarlos
@RichardHarlos Жыл бұрын
onemotherpucker wrote, _"This mentality that someone's profession makes them a good person is what has got us where we are now."_ I don't wholeheartedly disagree, but I think it's a bit more than that. I think that for those who offer professions as proxy credibility often are also people who think that 'everyone's doing it, so that must be the way life is; I better get my ducks in a row and play this game for all it's worth.' Not always consciously, but certainly subconsciously. Cultural norms, peer pressure, opportunity costs, etc., all play into the formation of morals, habits, and rationalizations. I'm not suggesting that we excuse such behavior, rather that at some point, it's appropriate to look at the society in which such behavior occurs. I live in the U.S. As far as I know, cannibalism isn't a norm here. So when we talk about it, it's with the implied understanding that this is somehow aberrant, abhorrent behavior. No one has to state the conclusion and offer the argument to convince others that this is so. But, if you find yourself in a society where cannibalism is normative, they probably don't often talk about it as an explicit topic because it's taken for granted to be 'normal'. In the U.S., we take for granted that politicians are often corrupt, and that business really has very few ethical boundaries if those boundaries threaten the maximization of profit, etc. For people like Epstein, the psychopathy and Machiavellianism strongly implies certain characteristics and motivations. I think it's these strong implications that allow Hubermann and others to surmise what was very likely going on behind the scenes, and this despite not having known him or met him, etc.

"Skateboarding taught me that you keep trying something over and over again, that's critical for science, science is hard, you fail most of the time and then you finally break through and discover something and it really holds up or you publish that paper, it feels amazing - so much better because of that huge stack of failures you have leading up to it. The other part is community and camaraderie. To this day I have great friends, skateboarding was about being that huge pack, also people push you; when you have a community and you hear about or see people doing something amazing, it pushes you and you use that as fuel to realise what's possible. Skateboarding is an amazing template for life." - Andrew Huberman

Once Plato and his friends were walking along a river, towards the palace of the local tyrant, for an evening of wine, music, beautiful dancing boys, and philosophical dialog. They saw Diogenes the Cynic standing in the river. They asked him what was he doing there. He was washing cabbages, and why? Because he needed the money. Plato said, "Poor Diogenes! If only you knew how to flatter the tyrant, then you wouldn't have to wash cabbages!" Diogenes said, "Poor Plato! If only you knew how to wash cabbages, then you wouldn't have to flatter the tyrant!"

It's difficult to give such a confident assesment of Epstein while simultaneously saying "I never met him". I just find it hard to believe that so many people who never met epstein are so sure that they 100% know what the deal was. I don't even think the people who DID hang out with Epstein know for sure all of his motives and why he socialized with who he did. I understand Huberman's point about why Epstein was "popular", but I feel like he's ignoring the possibility that Epstein was working as an intelligence asset.

I think this kind of shows how powerful science and scientists are. I like that Dr. Huberman acknowledged Joe's understanding of human nature. Joe made a nice comment right away about how people feel more inclined to be compliant with someone who has something. If the massive impropriety and immorality of pedophilia was used as a weapon against the powerful, rather than a reward, that would explain why it feels so unlikely that such a huge number of people seemed to be seeking that kind of gratification. And people who don't fit any kind of template for a victimizer. It always struck me as ridiculous to think that 100s of celebrities could be seeking something that the general population experiences at a significantly lower rate. Some of them at least had to have been ambushed and essentially blackmailed outright or finessed and exploited on a more subtle level. SOME folks went there to be pedophiles. I don't doubt that at all. I won't say who I think was actually there to see young ladiesBillClintonBillGatesbut there must have statistically been some who were fine with engaging it. Why didn't anyone um.... *manipulate* Jeffrey Epstein right back? Seems an operation that long would have incurred the wrath of someone willing to eliminate the threat he posed to them. If he's out there holding this kind of thing over a lot of heads, why didn't any of them unalive him until after everything was exposed? He operated this way for decades, unscathed by any of his marks, or any law agencies, or the victims or their families. How was it so easy to get away with what he was doing?

Duuude...its crazy...people knew what Epstein was doing down in Boca, Del Ray, etc. in SoFla in the early-mid 2000's. Stories would go around about a "finance guy...shutting down clubs" & having beds/lounges everywhere for everyone to start fkng each other...then you'd hear the rumors about his parties where the neighbors would complain about how they'd see them all having sex/orgies in his backyard. I can't remember if it was because his house was on the intracoastal? Making it visible to everyone going by on their boats? Or what. . . Regardless, he was well known down there for 1. having the insane amount of money he had & 2. for the massive sex parties.

Thank you!!! Alex. Yes!!! At the end of the day it's all about people and their psychology. My husband (an economist) and I have frequent conversations regarding different sets of issues and I always tell him, you only have data because human behavior has generated the need for that data. We have laws because of human behavior, we have science because of the human curiosity and need to understand our environment. Human behavior/ psychology accounts for so much. I get it, being able to quantify things eliminates the tendency towards bias, but we discount human behavior/psychology WAAAY too much.
