I am a therapist and have sleeves from my time in the military that while all PG rated, still include skulls, pin-ups, etc. I wore long sleeves out of respect of perceptions some of my patients/patients’ parents may have. I want there to be nothing controllable in the way of our relationship. However, I finally just got tired of sweating a gallon a day, and started wearing short sleeves. There has been no noticeable difference in how I’m received or how patients/parents open up to me. No one cared as much as I did. Reminds me of the saying, “Don’t take yourself too seriously, because no one else does.” People (most people) are good at reading others and judging based on merit, confidence etc., and we are often our own harshest critics.

I respect the way Andrew feels toward this. My arms and hands are completely tattooed and I work in higher education. I recently was part of an event, where I spoke and simply chose to wear something I felt good in - A nice blazer jacket and button-up shirt underneath. To my surprise, at least three different people asked about my tatttoos and thought that the school asked for me to cover up. I just responded with: "Not at all. I just wanted to look nice today." just like anyone else who may have been preparing to speak in front of a large audience.

@@grit1679 Influence is a subtle but important distinction to make here. You do not have control. You have influence which can give you the illusion of control. Second of all, you can try to run that game, but it's exhausting and it will break down because you cannot attend to your conditioning and programming flawlessly and the moment people catch wind of your attempts to manipulate them (and people are instinctually attuned to this, including toddlers), massive backfire. It's ultimately a stupid strategy even if someone happens to be sociopath. Even sociopaths who have studied their own failures will admit this and have stories of spectacular blowouts in their life and career. Ultimately, the wisdom lies not in believing it's "impossible" to control people. But understanding that it's a waste of time, energy, emotions and it ultimately puts you, in your own way.

My dad is a Neuroscientist. Growing up, most of my friends had parents who worked in business, and that's what they thought was cool. I was always secretly angry that my dad didn't get the same kind of materialistic admiration from my friends. My dad did not care one bit, and it wasn't until I grew up that I realized that he was waking up each and every day trying to save lives and better humanity, not line his pockets and raise me and my siblings as spoiled brats. All my life, he quietly set the example. I love him so much for that. Ironically, I wound up an entrepreneur. My business is, thank God, doing well, and my goal is to acquire enough resources to affect real change in my community, because it feels, at times, like money is the only real catalyst for change in this country. But when I hear Andrew speak, I'm reminded that there are men and women working tirelessly each and every day to help humanity in small but powerful ways. I'm reminded of my dad, quietly setting the example with his 5am runs and his relentless work schedule. As long as there are people with as big of hearts as the people who dedicate their lives to building a better future for humanity, we're gonna be alright.

He talked about his early life in a podcast 2 years ago. Surprisingly, he had a pretty chaotic teen years. He left his home and was crashing at his friends and girlfriend place for years. He didn't get along with his dad, a brilliant Stanford scientist, especially after he divorced his mother and went back living in Europe. Andrew dropped out of college to pursue his love for skateboarding and punk life. He was kinda lost for years not really figuring out what to do with his life until his girlfriend of the time dumped him. After that, he went back to college, fell in love with biology and the rest is history^^

It’s so nice to hear someone talk about this. I also wear long sleeves a lot of the time because of this. I’m not ashamed of my tattoos, I just don’t want it to be something that people focus on, especially in certain work or social situations. It’s good to be aware of your surroundings in this way, because tattoos are something that people will notice right away and could be a distraction or lead people to make judgements about you before they even get to know you.

The difference between him and most people with tattoos is that he is fulfilled inside and doesn't need his exterior to define him. Whereas, most other people get tattoos to fill what they lack inside, to be defined by something external, thus, most get their tattoos where it will be easily seen, even purposefully wear clothing that will expose it. These days majority of people get tattooed because it's trendy.

But they love searching aimlessly & pretend to know People without sense of own life ask for tattoos without sense and then spread the chaos on others... If they put thought to it as a builder before building something for decades or ages to last the design would be meaningful & adding beauty & sense of proportions to the world. Blaming Tattooist would be as blaming gun for killing somebody. Uncomfortable position to be really in context of economic incentive & personal ethics in play. The more respect for that then

When people ask me for advice or artists or color schemes or styles of tattoo for their first piece of ink, I always give them the same two pieces of advice. 1.) Wait an entire year. If it means that much to you, you still like the idea, and you still like the placement, you'll have an extra year's worth of money saved, a decent artist found, the right style chosen, and placement that you won't regret. 2.) If you had to get this tattoo in an area only you could see, would you still get it? *SO* many people (cough Millennials) get tattoos solely because they want people to notice them more. They end up spending next to no money at a garbage shop with a half formed idea, no preference on color, style, placement, or how it will age in that area with that color or lack thereof. Furthermore, if the meaning will assuredly fade over your life, you'll end up regretting it every time you see the thing. At least, if you pick a placement that no one can see but you, that's FAR easier than dealing with some monster neck piece that ends every job interview before it starts. In my opinion, the best possible way to plan for a tattoo is as follows: Wait a year, obviously, and if spend the year finding out precisely what style, what colors, the dimensions, the placement, and most importantly the meaning behind it all. As tough as it may be, pick a place not visible to the average bystander, thighs/buttocks/hips/feet etc that has enough skin space to work with your dimensions. Finally, search at least a dozen shops, look up the reviews, and find an artist who *specializes in the work you desire* then book an appointment to discuss the idea, the stencil, and what you desire from it. It will cost a decent amount of money if it's a worthwhile shop; this is unavoidable. At the very end, you'll have a masterfully well done tattoo that won't fade, is what you want, where you want, and is invisible to everyone but you so you can feel out how you react about having a permanent mark on your skin. If you love it, can handle it, and want more, than repeat the process and enjoy. If not, at least no one will see it but you and a significant other.

"Just be careful that you can't control the perceptions of other people" is such a wise statement. Despite some people being vocal about a subject they consider outdated (e.g. a negative opinion of tattoos), it takes many years for a shift in the public's eye, despite us wishing it was otherwise. Perhaps, then, it's in our own best interests to act in accordance to how the world is, rather than how we wish the world was or how we think it ought to be.

I've never heard someone put into such succint terms why facial tattoos are so off putting to many people. Most people probably couldn't put it into words but it makes sense that we would have a negative reaction when our brain has a hard timer interpreting someones facial features. It also makes me wonder about certain warrior cultures who have a tradition of facial tattoos in order to give themselves a psychological edge against their enemies.

as someone with face tatts and other visible places, i got them during a very dark time in my life, i didn't care about anything. they really show what you feel on the inside. when i overcame that dark time i came out matured and reflected alot on them and myself to the point where i had very bad social anxiety and preferred to stay in doors, i have to be cautious where i am at all times because i travel for work. im over the anxiety now and just accept its my consequence of my own decisions, i carry my self with respect and show manners which in return make people more interested in me for some reason and in a way i develop more sincere relationships. from my experience i can just say be aware of the consequences if you are thinking about it, you'll need to learn to live with it if you are self aware or become self aware afterwards. if you don't like attention and to be more in the shadows (like i do) DON'T get visible tattoos or at least not from the neck and above.

I fully relate to everything Huberman said. I’m 40 grew up in the punk rock/ DIY scene, started getting tattooed when I was 16, eventually found myself choosing to go to college in my 30s and am about to wrap up my masters at one of the well known northeastern fancy schools (hard work and persistence pays off eventually). Growing up in 80s/90s I vividly remember the reactions and general (mis)treatments from others because of being judged for what they perceived “my image” represented. Times have thoroughly changed, yet I often feel that, at least initially, all people see (almost literally) are my tattoos, and often I get pigeonholed because humans fundamentally try to reduce you to one “essential” domain for easier understanding/categorization. I dislike, like Huberman, in-group/out-group thinking because I’ve been quite variable and fluid through different circles, however most people aren’t and can’t process well the real multidimensionality of people. Try traveling through Asia or other cultures (granted more conservative/traditional cultures) with sleeves. It’s not that pleasant. I’m so much more than my choice of tattoos, yet not to many. Which is fine, but to Huberman’s point, think about how your personal choices will affect what you want to do and prepare accordingly.

Mr. Huberman is a class act. I’m 68. I’m from an era that very few people had tattoos unless you were in the military or a sailor or an ex-con. Many of my family members now have tattoos. I don’t understand the attraction and I personally would never get a tattoo. When I was almost 19 years old I was a passenger on a motorcycle that was broadsided by a car. The impact site was my left leg. The surgeon did save my leg. Possibly some of my distain for tattoos comes with being disfigured early in life. Either way, Andrew Huberman is accurate in regard to how we perceive piercings and tattoos. People can either heed his counsel or ignore it. Regardless of who you are, you do make judgments based on appearance. Don’t lie to yourself thinking you are judgment free.

I appreciate Andrew's perspective of his body art as it is called now. As I am even older than he, I find when I see someone with tattoos all over, I don't see the face etc, what he says is true. I would have to get to know the person more to be able to see beyond the pictures. I am also aware of some who wish they'd not gotten them and how much it costs to have them removed. Over time this process should become less painful to the body and the wallet, it's still something to be thought about before going into that parlour.

😳 woah. I’ve listened/watched SO much of his content and had no idea he had sleeves. This is very interesting and he has some solid reasoning about focusing on the data. Now I get his point and respect that, yet also have another perspective, being tattoos express a sort of authenticity aspect. Which to me, doesn’t (at least consciously) change perception in a negative way. Then again I also have a lot of them, so maybe that’s why. With that being said, I have heard on multiple occasions that people didn’t realize how intelligent I am until getting to know me (I say that as humble as possible). Which makes me wonder if my image is causing their perception to be of less intellect. My guess is yes.
