Andrew Neil challenges former SNP finance spokesperson and chair of the Scottish Growth Commission Andrew Wilson about the party's independence claims. Wilson says that Scotland could rejoin the European Union with Sterling as its currency, but that it could finance its debts without an independent monetary policy.

Blind nationalism and hatred of England. But nothing else there.

And you know that how? Because mr Murdock told you so? Come visit mate you’ll see we mostly love our English brothers, but we want different things as evidenced by how both nations have voted over the last 40 years. You all seem terrible insecure that we hate you, ever considered it just isn’t a beneficial relationship for anyone anymore?

@@AlwaysAC The majority of people in Scotland don't support these cretins. The majority of Scots don't want Scotland to break away from the rest of the UK. The last referendum proved that. So don't talk about 'we'. Both Nations haven't voted differently over the past 40 years. Different parts of England have voted differently than other parts of England and Scotland, different parts of Scotland have voted differently than other parts of Scotland and England and other parts have voted the same. I regularly visit Scotland, it is my favourite country in the world, so I don't think all Scots hate England, only the extreme Nationalists like the fascist poisonous dwarf.

Most NATO member countries spend less than 2% of GDP on defence. Iceland is a member of NATO with no standing army. For Andrew Neil to suggest that an strategically placed independent Scotland wouldn't be accepted into NATO if it spent less than 2% of it's GDP on defence is wrong. Nineteen NATO member countries spend less than 2% of GDP on defence. For example. Luxembourg spent 0.64% of GDP on defence. Belgium spent 1.1% of GDP on defence. Spain spent 1.16% of GDP on defence. Italy spent 1.43% of GDP on defence etc. Are you actually suggesting that NATO officials are going to kick out 19 NATO member countries because they are spending less than 2% of GDP on defense. Do you even hear yourself.

This is especially when Scotland will likely be struggling to meet other criteria, as mentioned in this interview. You have to realistic about these things. Imagine the Americans pressurising the E.U. into spending their fair share on European defence (as they have been). The last thing the E.U. will want to see is a small country, low on finances, wanting to join.

Ya know danny, I as a pro unionist englishman, do believe scotland could go independant, why couldnt they, if iceland can be independant there is no reason scotland can't. I do however think the SNP are deluding voters in what they must give up for it. SNP would have you believe that an independant scotland will get all the bells and whistles and the best of all words.. just simply wont happen. At the very least scotland will suffer over a decade of growth struggle and as andrew pointed out austerity is a given, EU and UK would insist upon if it wished to join the EU, the EU would insist onit like it did with greece, if it wasn't in the EU but still using stelrin and monetary union bank of england would insist onit. The biggest arguement with independant scotland is actually the same 2 arguements in used for remaining in the EU: Firstly) EU is uk 12%gdp, why cut yourself off from biggest market, it would be devastating.. scotland gdp is 60% reliant on the UK.. so how bad would that be in 12% is bad for uk? secondly.. Geography Why would you cut yourself off and make barriers to your next door neighbour.. scotland would not only suffer 1 barrier to the EU.. it would suffer 2.. so its growth figured are absolutely disingenious.. if UK will suffer so badly from 1 trade barrier.. how bad will scotland suffer with 2.. Not to mention the fact scotland is assuming it will be able to freely transport it's goods to the EU via uk and dover.. which there is absolutely no guarantee that will be the case.. which will make scottish exports ALOT more expensive. But like I said, I believe scotland can be independant, I just don't think there very realistic nor our SNP supporters about how hard it is going to hit you. But I think 15-20 years of independance would be a more likely estimate for scotland to become stable. And I don't think scotland will be anywhere close to joining the EU, if at all.. for at least the same time. EU currently just taken on 1.5 trillion of debt, there is no reason to believe they would want to take on a country with 9% deficit, 2 boarders to cross, and to have to renegotiate its agreement it just signed with the UK.. lets not mention catalonia and the issues it will cause in spain.

The SNP has never said that EVERYONE in Scotland wants to join the EU. They fully understand that at the Brexit vote Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU. But they also understand that some SNP supporters and some supporters of other parties would like an EFTA type agreement and their is A % of of voters who want nothing to do with the EU. In an independent Scotland the SNP will campaign in any election for full membership of the EU, other parties will have to decide their campaigning strategy with regard to the EU. Then it will be up to the people of Scotland to vote for the party that best reflects their views. It’s called democracy.

@@benvair1370 I don't think your points are unfair or incorrect however all the flag waving apart Andrew Neil did dig out a rather key problem with all this posturing by the SNP which is one of timescales. In effect the stance being put forward on behalf of the SNP came down to "We can ignore the deficit because the IMF said that post Covid..." Ignoring deficits is strictly aimed at major and established economies that can help kick start the global economy and not nations just starting out. In effect what an independent Scotland could be looking at is a minimum 10 and more like 20 years of no longer being part of the UK and yet not meeting the entry requirements of the EU this may not play well with the domestic electorate and will not be attractive to inward investment.

Let's get this clear, and I'm a Scot by the way. So, if Scotland did gain independence this year, the next, whenever, does Sturgeon think it would mean automatic entry into the EU? Nope! We'd be in the back of the queue behind Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania. Which means Scotland would not be able to use the Euro as its currency but would be stuck with a Scottish pound sterling worth nothing. Oh, and by the way, even today the Scottish pound is tied into the English pound and controlled by the Bank of England!!!! So, Ms Sturgeon, you're living on another planet!!

@@glasgovipsolara In what way are Scotland's resources stolen? Would they be not also be "stolen" if an independent Scotland joined the EU? How are Scotland's electorate ignored? Our votes count just the same as any other constituent country of the UK. We have a devolved parliament where the Scottish electorate can decide who runs the Scottish Government. The best example of the Scottish electorate being ignored is the SNP's continued pursuit of independence despite a convincing win for the no campaign in a "once in a lifetime" referendum. The main reason we voted no in 2014 was because of the financial uncertainty around leaving the UK. Its clear from this video that the SNP has learned nothing in the last 6 years. Their strategy is to seemingly lie through their teeth until they get what they want.
