Psyched to see these two legends together. Thanks for making this happen, David and Andrew, and for focusing on new, pertinent topics! I've developed and used various forms of A.I. in human neuroscience research for more than two decades, and I remain convinced that A.I. isn't nearly as much of a threat to us all as H.I. is (human ignorance). 🤓Sending appreciation from San Diego.

I used to run down to the record store after school sometimes to buy 7" vinyl records that had just gone to number 1 because if you didn't run they would be sold out. If you managed to get a good 7" it would be on repeat in the house for about a week. That doesn't happen any more. "Town Called Malice" by the Jam sold out every day before school finished for about 3 weeks. I lived in a village so I couldn't always get to town at the weekend but I think my older brother got a copy and probably still has it in his attic. Them days are gone. There is no going back.

Incredible discussion. Part of the reason the music I'm making is the way it is (complicated, unpredictable, completely improvised and delving in obscure tactics like a greek theatrical choral vocals, atonality, blatant and very human virtuosity etc. is to make it hella hard for AI to deal with). Its a proof of philosophical concept.

Thank you. I was going to comment this as well. I saw it on the bass player’s channel I think his name is Adam or something. Now they did have a specific limitation but it covered most of what people are going to put out lol! In that scenario, THEY filed to be the owners of it but their goal was to have no copyright for it because they believe fundamentally that the music creation should be free. At least that’s what I remember off the top of my head.
@DavidtheCrook18 күн бұрын
Great discussion! AI is definitely making things easier, especially with some of the mixing and mastering plug-ins, but it can never replace the human element. AI feels too 'perfect,' while humans bring creativity and emotion. By the way, your Recording, Mixing, & Mastering Hip Hop course was a game-changer for me -it helped me give my hip-hop clients better-quality songs. I recommend it to anyone wants to improve their skills, that course is a must.

Under current law, as I understand it, copyright vests in the author at the time of creation and stays there for the author's life plus seventy years. Therefore, IMHO, if it can't die, it can't hold a copyright.

Well done guys, brilliant discourse and that's the way it should be, completely open with honesty. I'm sure down the line, it'll work itself out, be your niche, be yourself. I keep telling my 12 yr old "do what you love, love what you do". In the end, the people will decide, it'll happen en masse, we're trying to be too methodical about it, trying to find simple solutions, but it's too complex. Collectively the people will change it all.

Great content, David. A real trigger for so much thinking. One question to think about: how much money would musicians get if we divide Spotify executive's checks among them (weighted by each one's streams)? I guess not too much for 95% of the creators. My thesis is that the model is the same as before Napster but now there's an inflation process due to the cheap content creation costs. Moreover, the model has not changed too much when you realize that Spotify can lose money but their main shareholders are also the big publishers that are being paid and payola is now disguised in curated playlists.

Always enjoy listening to the Andrew Scheps perspective. I know the conversation wasn’t meant to be a hope killer, (not that there’s much of that left:) and not that the situation can be fixed. Seems like there’s a virtuoso everywhere you look but you have to shovel through a lot of stuff to find something both good and original. The chase is probably still the best part. I think a large percentage will get bored with it or tired of throwing away money, but I wish I could be around to see what the music business looks like 20 years from now. I’m sure it will be as different as a 4-trk tape deck compared to an SSD drive🎶. Keep talking though, makes it interesting.

One thing I’ve recently learned from chat gpt that I found extremely useful is sound design. I started wanting to learn cinemetic/trailer sound design and so I asked chat gpt how to make a boom with zebra 2 and it really broke it down and then you can dive even deeper on each individual element. I found this to be so useful in learning specific sound design and also getting your hands dirty with whatever synth you chose to ask about.

One thing I've noticed about music technology is that you need fewer people and less money to get similar results. There are creators on here with a bedroom studio and midi drums that record every instrument, mix and master everything themselves and it sounds absolutely pro quality. AI will keep lowering that barrier to entry. But people also react to things they feel are low effort (people will still swear they hate autotune) and AI slop is the lowest possible effort.

Always a pleasure to hear Andrew Scheps drop some wisdom. I think there should be a group of people who have all the artist that sign up on a subscription and to get there stuff on all platforms with all there royalties without any legal restrictions. It's would be best if the group of people who start this to sign an agreement not to take any money from artist, only make money off there artist subscription agreement. The artist would have there full copyright and links to there website that's included with there package with no fees from the company. A strict procedure will be in place before any material is ever released along with personal information from the person who releases anything to make sure it's not A.I., By logging in everyday in some way shape or form to verify the authenticity so no A.I. is at foul play. Just a thought.

If artists have nothing in them that needs to come out, such that they need AI to generate it, what is the point? The real point of music is self-expression that might resonate with other humans. Most of us make music that nobody listens to, but for us, the creators, the music is still worth making. I deeply respect both of you guys. Thanks for the conversation.
