Why were people giggling like it's such a taboo topic? Like Andrew said, sexuality is a very serious topic, and it's really just a normal question to ask someone if their character is gay or not. Also Moriarty is hella gay.
@cha19667 жыл бұрын
I think people were giggling because of the idea of talking about fanfiction stuff with one of the actors of whom the character is often in these fanfictions (don't know if that was grammatically correct, sorry if it wasn't); being French, I understood the question and I think from the way it was asked and the moments people were reacting, and also from how I know French fandoms and the way they're usually very open minded, it was more about fan excitment than mocking :)

potentially because a lot of people in France are bigots... ( well, anywhere, but I just speak of what I see..) and homosexuality, as well as in many parts of the world, is still pretty taboo.. there are great and very followed social movements that goes against lgbt rights so that's quite a cultural thing and people would rather giggle at it than you know, consider it normal... And also because that's such a random question, also that person asks it in a pretty cringy way themself, so.. yeah, it doesn't help.
@cha19667 жыл бұрын
Well I don't agree with you, not saying that there are no bigots in France, I know there are, from how they stare at me and my queer friends in the street, from the reactions I sometimes get when I talk about my gender or orientation, but I feel like in the context of a geeky, quite young fandom such as Sherlock's, they are definitely not a majority, like, really not. Also from the way people clap at the end, I think it's safe to say that they are not especially intolerant and seem to agree with what Andrew said

@Ashethetics7 жыл бұрын
Aya I'm Ace and I can perhaps answer for myself as it's a broad spectrum. I personally can recognise someone as beautiful and I have been in relationships and worked a compromise, even, with people who want to have sex. As I say I find people attractive much like I would enjoy looking at a piece of art or a painting, but I have no sexual desire for them or anyone. Sex doesn't disgust me, some Aces it does - when I engage in it, the best I can tell you is it's like playing a board game or cards or something. It's an activity but not something I particularly enjoy. However, as I said, I'm not adverse to sex so I have done it, but more often than not I fake enthusiasm. To me if I really like someone otherwise it's a small compromise :) But Asexuality is a huge spectrum, similar to what autism has - it's basically a grouping word for low of no sex drive, or aversion to sex altogether because of disgust. You may get people who enjoy kiss cuddly stuff, you may get some who like foreplay but not full sex and that's all okay. Some wil say a true Ace has no sexual attraction but I don't think that's true, I think there is degrees to it. Hope that helped! :)

I think as other people mentioned before he's either sapiosexual or he is somewhere on the scale between pansexual to demi sexual. I'm not sure. Intelligence probably matters more than personality to him but Sherlock's personality played role in Jim Morality being fascinated, because he is different from others. The reason I mentioned demi- sexual is because he probably isn't attracted to a lot of people despite being very flirtatious. He likes to mess with people. So who knows if he even has a preferred gender, pansexuals can have that.

what people often do on social media is reducing a character (wich is supposedly a person with a complex background and a complex mind just like every single individual on earth) to their sexuality, or specifically to a gay relationship they may be involved in. The comments below the video are just a bunch of people saying "yes, he's this or that sexuality!" which just proves the point. it's disturbing to see how much fetishization of gay relationships is going on on social media

Such a good answer. It is up to the audience to interpret it how they see fit- the character is there to provide them entertainment and can fit into whatever that person wants, allowing them to form a closer relationship with the show. After all, Moriarty isn't an actual human being. He is a character, made from fiction. So using the fiction from your own experiences or preferences isn't a bad thing.

Sexuality is just another facet of your life or a characters life. All created persons whether human beings or fictional characters are created for the same reason. To learn to love and live and learn to forgive. Drama happens when two person are put in a situation and they have to interact to solve a problem. Love and hate are flip sides of the same coin. Honestly there is a little of each in every relationship. It's what makes life interesting.

For all people who don't understand why French people in the room are laughing during the question, Yes we are dumb but not dissrespectful (not Sherlock fandom, i hope) It's not because they think someone saying "gay" or "sexuality" is funny, but because of Fanfiction. The absurdity to ask to Andrew Scott about fanfiction (and you know there isn't just 'some' fanfictions) between Sherlock and Jim is just enormous The guy who ask the question begin with "I know i'll make ennemies with this question" because he know there is not the kind of question you ask to an actor French People, we laugh when someone says something cringy or something that nobody dares to do People in this room were just surprised that he ask this, and our reaction is laugh It's just to explain the reaction, but personally i think this question seems to make Andrew really inconfortable and it's really dumb to ask it. And The whole question was approximately "I want to know what you think about gay fanfictions about your character. *laugh* I know that Steven Moffatt don't really likes it. I want to know what you think of the idea that fan make these relation And more personaly, if he has to imagine a gay relashionship with Jim, with wich other character he would imagine it ? *laugh*"

And how am I supposed to know that, since I don't even know my own sexuality in the first place?! I say I'm bi, but I don't know if I'm also asexual or demisexual. ...or am I like 60% into girls and 40% into boys or what (because I've learned that bisexuality doesn't mean you're 50% into boys and 50% into girls...like half and half).

Yeah I would like to know this too. I have no big problem with writing and reading on English but it's really difficult for me comprehend the English speech. Especially British accent. It makes me cry.

what he basically said was that it is up to everyone to interpret Moriarty's sexuality as they wish, that while he has some certain ideas about what his sexuality might be (and he has spoken about it with the producers) he is willing to let people to decide whatever floats their boat.

English is not my first language either, and Andrew's got a Dublin accent, but I tried my best, hope this helps :) Andrew's answer: Well, here’s what I think about that. And it’s actually a very serious question… if people don’t get too hysterical about sexuality. The characters are… there is something about Sherlock and Moriarty; they’re obsessed with each other. I can only speak about that relationship, because that’s the one that I’m sort of, in some way, in charge of. And there is a thin line between love and hate, and, of course, with any great antagonistic rivals in drama, there’s gonna be that sort of frisson, sexual frisson. But we live in the Internet age, and the digital age, and people are allowed to project whatever they choose to project onto the characters, if that’s what gives them pleasure. It’s not something that we should take a lead from, no, absolutely not. But what all great art is, it’s purpose is to inspire and to give people confidence. And it’s my job to play the character as I see fit. And if people see stuff in the character relates to their sexuality, whatever that sexuality may be, than that’s up to them to interpret it, and I have a certain idea about sexuality and the character, and it’s … if people see that in the character, than brilliant, that’s not a bad thing or a good thing. But I have to keep that close to my… in my imagination, in the same way that I think about Moriarty’s familial situation, his relationship with his family, his relationship with his country, his relationship with everybody. And that includes his sexuality. So people don’t… I think people… when I… the reason I think it’s serious is that people’s sexuality isn’t a…for…it’s not to titillate people. I would hate for characters to be redacted…reduced just to fit a sort of, to fit a frenzy. So I’m very aware that that shouldn’t be done, in fact, it’s something I’ve spoken with our producers about before. But yeah, if people wanna… wanna see the characters gay, straight, bisexual, asexual, whatever floats your boat, that’s… that’s up to you. And I think it’s time that we embraced every different type of sexuality and … (I couldn't hear the end of the sentence because of the applause)
