I'm typically a massive fan of Michael, but this episode almost makes me pity whomever he has taken (or will take) as his spouse... No hate for this whatsoever, but I'm attempting to imagine marriage to someone who refuses to have sex with you for more than a few times a year solely for pregnation purposes, and it isn't pleasant. Thats not what he is advocating for! In Catholic theology, sex is for the procreation of children, the bonding of the married couple, and for enjoyment. IN THAT ORDER. So its not you can never have sex for enjoyment with your spouse, but if you only want to have sterile sex, sex with no babies, than that's kind gay. That's why rendering the sexual act sterile with contraception is a sin in the Catholic Church, because you're circumventing the procreation to get at the enjoyment. Having sex during the infertile period is fully permitted because you are not intervening to make the act sterile, it's just a natural part of a woman's cycle. And as a lot of Natrual Family Planning haters will tell you, the natural method is not 100% at avoiding pregnancy. So you are still being "open to life" or open to procreation by having sex in an infertile period. Basically, you have to be willing to embrace the possibility of a child in order to enjoy sex morally.

I don’t disagree that sex is meant for procreation and having kids. However it is also for pleasure and growing closer to ones spouse and for a calming dopamine effect in the body. Living purely for one’s own enjoyment is decadent and bad. But working 12 hour days and spending the rest around the house fixing and only doing things for family is also not what was intended. Your meant to be happy and good and holy. Good reminds us again and again to recognize the sabbath or to rest. To enjoy one another and the community. I think Knowles’ missing context is when Andrew and Tristan were talking about this in the past. Tristan believes that masterbation is gay because you are pleasuring yourself and by doing so, you’re pleasuring a man. Thus, the same can be said with having ‘sterile sex’ as he is pleasuring himself. Knowles comes with the perspective that gay relations are sterile so sterile sex is gay. Highlighting a slight nuance in what the Tates believe vs. what Knowles think they mean.

I think also that the feminist view has slowed women down and we tend to start families much later in life - this means we can only fit a couple children in before it's too late. It's definitely wrong to be sexually active without wanting children, but you can't know, just briefly interacting with a childless couple whether they are childless by choice. Before I was married, I thought infertility and trouble conceiving was a rare exception. I thought everyone who was married for a year and didn't have a baby on the way was actively preventing pregnancy. Now I know that that's not necessarily the case. It is, sadly, the norm to postpone having children until later in life, and so no doubt most people who don't know us well assume my husband and I "plan" on having our kids later. If we don't have kids by the time I'm 30 and they finally start teasing and asking about plans for a family, maybe then they'll realize it's not something to be taken for granted.
