Brian was in touch with the sentiments of the average rugby fan. He was a regular contributor to a rugby forum years ago when he got into a spot of trouble with the BBC for his use of the phrase "Take that you cheese-eating-surrender-monkey". He asked for feedback from the international rugby community and took that back to the BBC. I would have loved to be in that room when they tried to admonish him in the face of the unqualified support he received from the fans.

I've never been able to find it, but I distinctly remember a Brian Moore comment before the start of a Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield. They had a number of pipers up on the roof playing Flower of Scotland and Brian said something like 'if they want to make it more realistic they should have one of them betray his mates to the English'. His co-commentator responded with 'do you have any friends north of the border, Brian?'

I’m only in my 20s so I’ve effectively been raised on this newer, kick tennis style of play, and I still find myself screaming at the tv every time youngs or Ford get their hands on the ball. “Send it, send it wide, PASS THE FUCKING BA.. and he’s booted it again for fucksake”. Then again it might be because my dad grew up playing with Brian at Crocs so I’ve got their mentalities drilled into my head 😂

He certainly grew on me as a commentator. There was another classic, early in his commentating career, when he said a French player who was playing the ball on the wrong side of the ruck deserved a "bit of shoe". The other commentator asked why, and he just said "Well, he *is* French"...

I remember in the first quarter or so of an England v South Africa game some years ago, Robbie Fleck (SA centre) was putting it about a lot off the ball (well before video refs were a thing) and Brian said "somebody needs to stick one on Robbie Fleck soon otherwise somebody's going to get badly hurt", or words to that effect. Those of us who played for many year know, especially way back when, and maybe still these days in the lower tiers, that when a ref doesn't take action against dirty players, sometimes you have to take the law into your own hands, which is what Brian was talking about. And we all knew who the ideal person on our side was to enforce the law!.....People who haven't played don't understand this and might have thought that Brian was promoting dirty play (not that he was a saint, of course!). I've always enjoyed his commentary, and signed his petition online a few years ago to get the law sorted out on dodgy put-ins to the scrum - which still annoy me to this day (and I was a fly half, for Christ's sake). He'll be missed.

Same in league, and at all levels, ref doesn't attend to some shithouse tactics and sooner or later it kicks off. I never really experienced things going absolutely pear shaped in lower level union but I didn't play that much, certainly league games at the lower levels could be utterly ridiculous violence wise fortunately I only played in one game with a 'berserker' and it get out of hand! There were always the odd hair trigger player who'd fight at the drop of a hat. Moore was a great pundit.

@@ynotnilknarf39 as someone who’s played both all my life, I’ve been in a fair few scraps ranging from a regular shirt grabbing dick measuring contest to all out brawls in both codes. I have no problem with people having to take matters into their own hands every now and then (I’m not a massive fan of punch ups because I don’t think that kind of behaviour belongs in rugby, despite being involved myself more often than not 😅) but it’s a bit sad that we as players have to resort to making a point and risk being binned because of refs not doing their jobs properly

I don’t necessarily agree with Davies, from what I’ve heard from him he doesn’t tend to be anywhere near as critical with Wales as he is with other teams, whereas Moore, as we’ve seen in this video, is critical on all fronts. Aye, another Welshman here who enjoyed listening to Brian Moore over the years. Yeah he's a passionate and outspoken commentator, but that's what you want. Well, it's what I want anyway. It's a passionate and emotive game a lot of the time, and I want commentators who get that and feel the same way - irrespective of what team they're on. He should've perfected some regional UK accent, got himself a suntan or expressed confusion over his sexuality and he'd still be in a job. Shame that that's what it comes down to these days.

Uncompromising. That's the word to describe Brian Moore. As a player he never took a backwards step, in commentary he would recognise brilliance no matter who it was ( even the French!) He would also express his ire at poor play, stupidity and lack of imagination no matter who ( particularly his beloved England) because he wants rugby to be better.
