Most iconic rugby try in my lifetime will always be the semi final try new Zealand v england. Jonah lomu running over mike catt. I was 8 years old when I watched that world Cup. The day after that try I begged my dad to take me to the local rugby club. Been watching it ever since. Watch rugby league two both 2 amazing sports and Jonah was the biggest star of them all. Rip big man will forever be my hero
@interestedbystander1964 жыл бұрын
Indeed, friend. Jonah changed the game like no one before or since. He's a rugby icon/god/legend for a reason. I suspect, though, that if you dropped him into a game today (at peak fitness, his illness notwithstanding), he wouldn't make as much of an impact. He changed the mold for what a backline rugby player is. Never before had there been a giant, string, fast winger, with real skills. If you look now, though, every second guy is a Lomu. You see where I'm coming from? Jonah was a special player, and a standout in his time, and he wears the 11 jersey in my GOAT team. But the 14 jersey goes to my pick for the greatest winger, Bryan Habana. I'm sure a lot of folks would have things to say about my suggestion above, and about my selection, but it is my team. That's the beauty of it. I cannot be wrong. 😉 Have a good one, and stay safe.

All those great moments of sport and achievement... unique ! A particular one, I shall never forget : at 5:28 in the USA vs AFS pool match, during the RWC 2007 in France. I was the venue's official commentator, and couldn't believe it when the blazing Ngwenya outsprinted Habana for a 55 meter try. That was a sensation in the whole stadium, even for the staff in our booth ! We nearly forgot to announce it, then suddenly woke up to realise it was for real : someone could actually run faster than "Brian the one". Aside this particular moment, the whole World cup was a huge pleasure from start to finish. Kind of thing you never can forget and keep in your thoughts for a whole life. I just can't wait for that next one to come. See you in 2023, you lots !

A word on the Carlos Spencer try vs Crusaders, and correct me if I'm wrong. That was the final minute. Blues were ahead on points. Just needed to hold on and kick it out. Not sure why that last Habana try was in there, or Bennett's Scotland try against Australia - they were just breakaway tries that occur multiple times per season. But the rest of these are magnificent. I love seeing a piece of individual brilliance like the Dawson, Carter, Cullen or Lomu tries. But there's nothing more satisfying than seeing a whole-team try like Maitland for Scotland, Edwards for the Barbarians or Sadourny for the French.

Sadly, Gareth Edwards' "try of the century" (2:30 onward) wouldn't have been allowed nowadays. The game would have been stopped for replays from 67 different angles while the TMO determined that the final pass was forward, and then the game would have been returned 80m downfield where Beegee would have been yellow (or red?) carded for his high tackle on JPR, and a penalty would have resulted all the way back there. The modern pro game shuns common sense for needless stoppages in its quest for pedantic accuracy. (You have to wonder where it will all end: perhaps the team captains will get two strategic referrals per half, similar to the DRS system used in cricket?) And yet despite all of this technology, refs still get panned for bias and errors........
