We’re baaaaaack (from Paris that is!) We took our three kids to the Olympic Games and made a month-long trip out of it where we adventured through France, London and Italy. It was incredible in so many ways and we’re beyond thankful for our time as a family but if you’re a parent out there you know that traveling anywhere with three kids can bring a whole different set of challenges. Overall, our trip was amazing and we wanted to spend this episode answering some of the questions you had for us! We hope you enjoy :)

My mother made it a point to have our family travel each summer as well, even if it was in the USA. We’d take road trips to different states and go visit national parks, museums, all sorts. I was so grateful they let us see the world. I HIGHLY recommend it

I love how you include your kids in as much experiences as you could, aside from work! You approach everything as a family unit. Too many parents still want to be couples. Couple time is important, but you two are parents to your kids first & foremost. You recognize that they are your priority, & that is lacking in our society too much. You two are an inspiration!!!!

Experience is the best teacher! Traveling with your children while they're young will teach them that not everything will always go to plan and they'll learn how to adapt to situations. It's a learning experience for the parents as well!

Traveling with kids that younger shapes them to be phenomenal travels and go with the flow people for life! My eldest grew up in Germany, we were stationed there, and he can handle anything because he has been traveling since 5 weeks old and his younger brother learned by watching him handle anything like ok whatever let’s just make it work. It is a lesson that is o so worth it!!

Nurse here- All 7 of my kids got croup.. it is sooo scary. I always opted for the dexamethasone IM that lasts 3 days, gets them over the worst hump. The oral version didn’t help as well or as fast. I had one of mine gave to be rushed in an ambulance. Glad all is well now. Going in the bathroom and turning the shower on hot and just sitting in the bathroom while the steam is in there can help along with taking them out in the cold and keeping them upright helps as well. Just from a nurse and a mom with kids with croup.

I had croup as a child, and I'll never forget how scary it was when I would start coughing and couldn't catch my breath. We had an Osteopathic Doctor who prescribed creosote tablets that you would dissolve in a spoon of warm water and then pour it down my throat. It almost instantly stopped the coughing. I'm sure they don't prescribe that nowadays, but it sure helped me. My son, who is now almost 34, also would get croop frequently as a child. My sister had a steam shower in her house, and one of the things we did for him was out eucalyptus oil on the steamer in the shower and close it up tight and sit with him while he breathed it in. We would do this as soon as it seemed like he was getting sick or if he woke up with croop. It helped ease the inflammation and congestion of his lungs, so that he was able to breathe. His pediatrician is who suggested this to us.

I love the idea of summer travel! I want to encourage you to consider US destinations as well!!! Maybe even before you head off to Africa! Try the Pacific Northwest for a month …or California coast…or The coast of Maine … So much to offer here at home and there is no question that both you and the kids would be enriched by it - save the trips to Africa for when they are all school aged…they will be able to get so much more from that experience when they are 5-10 years old!!! (A safari with diapers seems hard?!)

Our kids traveled extensively when they were young. My husband was active duty military and we had two overseas assignments. One when they were very little and another when they were in the middle of their childhood years. There were some trips that were a little rough (carrying two strollers over the Venice canal bridges), but overall they are more culturally aware, more into world news, and just more well-rounded. When you have to move and travel with a lot of luggage (plus pets) you learn to let the little stuff go more. I will never regret the time we spent together making memories and how close those shared memories and time together grew us together as a family. We still love doing things together even if now our travels are more stateside since my husband's retirement. The only thing that made it hard on them was how classmates in their schools sometimes didn't get what they were talking about because of their wealth of experience living overseas. Now that they are older, that doesn't affect them, thankfully. Keep the memories alive, talk about the things you've done together, it helps build family culture and closeness. The Bucket List family has some amazing tips on traveling with small kids. They've traveled extensively with their 3 children for years. Personally, I thought the travel days were a little tough, but the vactioning/exploring days made up for the travel days.

I appreciated Andrew's healthy vs unhealthy expectations post reflection comment about the flight experience and Shawn's flight attendant moment haha. Made me laugh thinking about our last flying family trip where our 2nd born had the stomach bug on a plane. Changing that diaper in a 2ft by 2ft cubicle with no ability to move your body freely, thinking to myself "do I walk out and tell my wife, "Babe this is an IOU moment for life? Or do I just figure this out?" And ultimately deciding after a self pep talk, "No you got this." 45 minutes later, half a thing of baby wipes, and the loss of 1 toddler shirt, I now have a core memory I can't unsee for the rest of my life 😅

This year me and my family had the opportunity to attend the Olympics and although it is such an incredible experience what you guys explained in the beginning is so true! Making it to the venues is hard at times because of traffic, there’s a bunch of events happening at once, we even missed one event cause we got there late! But overall is magical to see athletes at that level and I would do it again if I can in the foreseeable future ! ❤

Tip from a doctor mom: Next time before you travel, see if your pediatrician can write a prescription for the steroid so you can fill it ahead of the trip just to have on hand in case of emergency. It's not difficult to fin healthcare. I's just that in France steroids can be considered dangerous for kids and it's only in some very specific cases that we give that to children. And children are not more ill in France than in the USA.

oh my gosh yes, about your description of not having time to do a bunch events in a day. We had one day with Equestrian Jumping in the morning and Gymnastics in the evening. Not only were they far apart (Equestrian was in Versailles), but you have to walk for miles even once you get to the arena. Between that and shuttles, trains, etc. it takes SO MUCH TIME. We left the first even early to make it on time to the second and they were 6 hours apart.

My husband and I have 2 sons who are now married and have given us 5 grandchildren. We both worked full-time and our kids were in daycare, but we really endeavored to be a family and spend as much time as possible with our children. We never had the finances to do a lot of international travel, but we made sure we did as many vacations as possible with our kids. We always brought our kids with us, and even though it is harder traveling with kids, I wouldn't change a bit of it. We have visited nearly every state in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, with our children and now our grandchildren. I definitely encourage families to travel/vacation together as a family unit. Include the grandparents and adult siblings and their families as much as possible as well. The memories you will make are so wonderful and so important. We always sit and reminisce about our trips, the good and the not so good. They are all a part of life. We now enjoy traveling with our grown children and their families, and we take a lot of trips with just us and our grandchildren. We have made several car trips across the US and Canada with our grandkids, and plan to do many more. We gave also been privileged to take them to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and across much of Canada. We are planning on a road trip to Alaska in a few years and several other international trips. Not only will we have the memories and the photos and videos, but the younsters will never forget those memories. Our grandkids range in ages of 1-yr old, two 3-yr olds, and two 8-yr olds. They 3-yr olds and the 8-yr olds talk all the time about all the good times they've had traveling with us. They are always anxious for the next trip, even the younger ones. We are busy planning our next adventure, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. It really is fun hearing all the details.

I often do a long haul late night flight to Australia, and they always serve a supper 2-3 hours into the flight and then turn out the lights for sleep. You sleep better on a full stomach is their philosophy. My next 16+ hour flight from Houston-New Zealand-Gold Coast is in 6 week. My daughter has done the flight several times with her children/babies, and it is not easy. People understand so be kind to yourself!!!!!

Shawn, I was a cougher as a lil girl, I didn't quite have a mom like you, so she didn't take me to a Dr about it till I was around 9...they ended up finding out I had terrible allergies, I didn't cough all the time, but certain things I was around would put me in coughing episodes if she doesn't outgrow it, may be worth a check.

The craziest part of Disneyland Paris for me was the blatant cutting in lines. I went back in 2008 and one of the main things I remember was the French just cutting in line, the English freaking out since they are even more queue oriented than us Americans, and then the French shrugging their shoulders as if they had no idea what they were saying. It was wild but I had so much fun.

I can honestly, kindly answer that question. Again, this is only out of care. Most likely not before, is the pilots will call us anytime throughout the flight. They inform us that turbulence may be ahead, and make sure we make all passengers safe. We love our passengers, and want to make sure everyone is safe. There is a lot going on behind the scene, it is about safety. We don’t just serve food, we are first and foremost making sure everyone, especially children are safe. We never men to upset anyone. Honestly we don’t.

Great job with the traveling. I would have been freaked out had my kid had croup over there. Next time seeing you are thinking about traveling to Africa. I would travel with a Steriod prescription in hand knowing how you use it. My son has these issues and I have learned how to administer. Obviously you would get in touch with your doctor. In France we don't use steroids in this case because it can be considered dangerous for young children. You can use it only in some very specific case if a doctor think that this is the only solution. Do you seriously think that children in France are well less cared than in the USA ?

@@languerouge5385 her son was not even seen. If you have a child with this severe of an issue they are used. The hospitals would not even see her son. I am speaking from experience of a medically fragile child. I do not travel without all of his meds. That is all I am saying it has nothing to do with being upset with France. Just saying when you are going anywhere with your child take the emergency meds. Yes steroids at the right dose are an emergency med. sorry to offend you.

I fully understand your predicament with children ill with croup or asthma overseas. My tip travelling with young kids, is to take medications with you including steroids. That way you can contact your doctor and depending on the situation he will advise you what to take from your packed medications. It is the best way to travel in Europe or the states.

I highly recommend that you reconsider, waiting till the kids are older to go to Africa. In fact, there is an age requirement for most safari trips for safety reasons. You get very close to the animals and a child screaming or yelling can become a life-threatening situation. Plus of all the places you could go you will not understand any of the languages. Africa is a wonderful place to take kids on safari but when they’re older like teenagers.

If you're thinking Africa I would recommend you find out if y'all need extra immunizations to go? I say this only because my uncle went somewhere in Africa for work probably 5 year's ago stayed for 2 months due to the job and came home and said he had to get at least 2, but maybe 3 shots/ boosters in his arm because Africa as a whole is full of disease and the wild animals carry disease, sometimes people get bite from the animals.... so yeah please look into it. Obviously don't want any of y'all to get seriously sick with something bad. ❤

Being European (German) I think the problem was not the hospitals, but rather that we do not usually give kids such strong medications in Europe (like steroids). the U.S. is much quicker to give strong medications, also strong pain killers, etc. and I think that is why it was so difficult. Its not their standard treatment protocol and thats why nobody wanted to be liable for doing something so out of the ordinary (my guess).

Also, most countries, the emergency room is only for emergencies, as in life and death.. not to take away from the feeling of being utterly powerlessness of not being able to get help your child. I do think if poor Jett's condition has just a bit worse and it was a life and death emergency he would have been.seen. but that's not very helpful when if he had been seen, it might prevent him needing emergency care 🤔

Plus, I agree with you that they would have 100% been seen if Bear really did have an emergency. Our paediatrician gave us a steroid puffer that we kept to travel with. We would refill before we travelled each time just in case. We considered it similar to an epi pen as part of must have.

Pretty sure they acknowledged that she was just doing her job? But that the timing - from him not being in a seat belt then falling asleep and being told to be in a seatbelt- was what was confusing. Why not before?

This is why I get SOOOO NERVOUS leaving the USA. Medically stuff like that happens way to often overseas. Thank you God, Team USA house and Mama for making sure Jet got his steroid.

In France we don't use steroids in this case because it can be considered dangerous for young children. You can use it only in some very specific case if a doctor think that this is the only solution. Do you seriously think that children in France are well less cared than in the USA ?
