I was able to use the same filter wrench I use for my Polaris filters to get the oil filter housing off. Although the upper area is machine to accept the "special" Toyota tool, they appeared to understand not all of us want to purchase one-off tools for a regular maintenance item like an oil change and provided us with an option to use a standard filter wrench at the lower edge. That was my experience on my "new to me" 2018 Tundra. Thanks for the video and looks like you will be having the oy change the oil here soon!

@@kennethriley428 my truck spends a good amount of time towing and running alot of short trips around town, I just dont feel comfortable going 10k with oil changes on a $40k dollar investment, toyota probley just wants these trucks to become worn out by 100k miles so you will buy a new one. My transmission will also be getting serviced @50k rather then 100k miles, idc what the dealer or Toyota says

Toyota put the capacity at 8 quarts of full synthetic to extend the changes to 10,000 miles. Of course, if you own stock in an oil company, you may change it as often as you please. These trucks routinely go 500,000 miles without any engine issues. I think you'll be OK at the 10K service interval.

I had the Toyoguard 2 year free oil change bullshit when I bought mine. I just changed the oil myself after watching your video and honestly judging by looking at the bolts & screws on the skid plate I don't think its ever been removed. I bet those hacks at the dealership probably just drained and refilled the oil without changing the filter. I'll be changing the oil myself from now on. Thanks for uploading this video. Super helpful

Yep my two "free" oil changes at the dealership, at 10k and 20k, I don't think they changed the filter! I did my own change at 25k after seeing this video. Skid plate looks like it hasn't been touch, the filter housing was stuck as thought it never been removed and I had to hire a professional friend mechanic to remove the housing. The old filter was very dirty! Truck is 3 yrs old and has only 25k miles due to covid. I will never go back to that dealer again.

You the man! I am not use to the no housing oil filter on a Tundra. I've been a long time K&N guy in the past. Found a 10 pack of "oem" filters and orings for $45 on Amazon along with a $35 wrench and hose kit to drain it. Costco carries a 4 pack of the 0w20 Kirkland jugs for $65, cheaper by about $20 than 4 Amazon Basics oil jugs I use on my wife's Prius. Another video shot the oil filter holder with a brake cleaner or spray to clean it. I'm also buying some 6mil gorilla poly gloves from home depot. My dad never wore gloves with reloading or working on dirtbikes/cars so I'm trying to get in the habit of using gloves now that I have a baby who will probably want to help when he's your boys age! Great video!

The smaller O-ring that comes with the filter goes under the steel oil cannister drain plug. I didn't see you replace it. Also, while that drain hose is nice, the little plastic nipple that comes with the filter is made to screw into the bottom of the cannister to allow the oil to drain out.

the skid plate is easy, and the tools cheap. the skid plate take all the front bolts off and remove the last rearmost one last and its simple, it slides slightly to the left when you take it off, and goes back real easy. put the rearmost centre one back in and she almost lines herself up. I find it more convenient doing myself and do save a few bucks no question. I'd say its about half the cost.

The Toyota dealer does not use Toyota oil as it is not cost effective. The dealer that does my oil changes uses Mobil 1, Ow20 same thing you have here. I know it is easy to do the oil changes at the house, but taking it to the dealer, I don't have to worry about the old oil. They charge $95 for the service and I get a free wash. Friend, [ kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZS8aYOEj8uBrJIm27s ] I am certain that torque foot pounds apply to the tightness of: 1- the oil pan drain plug, 2- the housing that the filter element is contained within, 3- the mini-cap of the oil filter element housing /// I don't bother with the mini-cap of the cartridge housing. After I've drained the oil from the oil pan I leave the plug OUT, and I just unscrew the housing for the filter element with whatever oil is in it. Once this housing is removed I pull the old element out, trash it, and dump the oil into the same "catch" that has the oil from the oil pan. [ Use a new crush washer when reinstalling drain plug to 30 Ft/Pnds. ] The filter element housing is reinstalled to 18.44 Ft/Pnds.
