I don't find the history of the speedmaster disappointing at all to be honest. Building something for a specific purpose is neat and cute, but having a robust and solid design off the bat that is capable of withstanding an unintended purpose is something else.

I thought of that too. Omega techs just built it to be the best they could make it, and then, NASA found it and it fit their specs perfect. How many other products are out there that could build something without consulting NASA and still meet their specs. My guess is not very many.
@Nichomachus
@Nichomachus 5 ай бұрын
Exactly my thoughts! I’ve always found it very cool that their standard product already met all the specs that NASA came up with. No product placement / sponsorship, just “the best” NASA could find at the moment, with no need for modifications except the Velcro strap!

The story of the Speedmaster makes it better, not disappointing. Making a watch good enough for NASA when you're not even trying is much more impressive than succeeding with an all out specified effort.

Wearing a Submariner looks so pretentious. People are going diving at the mall? Is it really worth $10,000? The difference between a Sub and a good $2,000 dive watch is marketing. Is a Royal Oak worth the insane price?

If the Blancpain / Rolex story is shocking to some who have been living under a epistemological rock, I wonder what would happen if you drew Zodiac into the story. But the story about the Navitimer not being for the faint of heart is really another reason to appreciate Breitling. That said, you underestimate, terribly, the importance of having trains run on time. The history of the Railway watch is long, interesting, and a cornerstone of the thinking that begat the industrial revolution. Timing stuff. Important since 1850. :)

The misinformation in this channel is something else. For anyone interested in where the Submariner (and most modern Rolex) DNA actually stems from, look up the Rolex Zerographe 3346 - designed / built in 1937, it predates both the Blancpain and that blueprint by 15 years. And the “triangle at 12, rectangles at 3,6,9”, the Zerographe did it first in 1937, and *may* have been the inspiration for that blueprint. The Rolex Turnographe was completed and released at the same time as the Fifty Fathoms in 1953 and was already dive capable at 100m thanks to the Oyster case (the FF was capable of a little less, at 91m). Rolex was already planning for deeper depths, sending the Deep Sea N°1 below 3000m as a proof of concept the same year as the FF release. It was months (not a year) after the release of the FF and Turnographe that Rolex may have adopted the idea of a unidirectional bezel from Blancpain. Both the Turnographe and Deep Sea N°1 featured the Submariner DNA, including the circular lume plots, rectangles at 3,6,9, and triangle at 12- even Watchfinder themselves alluded to all of this this some time ago.

To this day the Rolex Sub is a mystery to me. I value a steel cased watch with a good movement at 2 thousand dollars max. (During the Vietnam era, GI's would take leave in Bangkok and pickup a Rolex for 200 bucks.) Only if it was made of noble metals would I value it higher because then it would have intrinsic worth.
@waterfordrs22

Prior to the quartz crisis, Rolex was simply a manufacture of very good tool watches. They were something a blue collar worker could work towards and wear, it was a daily wear. I bunch of things have changed- inflation for one. Blue collar wages haven’t kept up with inflation over the course of time, gone are the days when such a worker could support a family alone. Rolex itself had to reinvent itself as something more exclusive that was worth a premium. It’s only in the last twenty years prices have gone nuts. And that includes vintage Rolex as well. So while you could buy a z Rolex for 200 bucks in ‘69, they was far from cheap. What was the average price for a car or house back then?

@@betochiwas sounds about right. Hardly a casual purchase, but within reach of someone who made it a priority. When seen in terms of today’s dollars, that $200 price tag is obviously a hell of a lot closer the the self imposed limit of the person who made the comment than it is to $200.

What's more, when the propmaster laid out a bunch of watches for Steve McQueen to look at for the movie Le Mans, there were other brands on the table, too. McQueen didn't initially choose the Monaco, or even a Heuer - it wasn't until he was reminded that his firesuit bore the Heuer logo (since he chose to wear the same one as Siffert) that he was persuaded to wear a Heuer for the movie. From there, he chose the Monaco out of the lot. The one thing people can complain about the Monaco Calibre 11 Monaco is that it has a Sellita-based movement inside. I have no issues whatsoever with a Sellita, or Eta, but when a watch retails for, now, more than $7,000 USD, many discerning buyers would expect something a bit more unique. It doesn't really bother me much, but it is definitely a complaint heard often. Regardless of how potentially not actually exciting the lore of the story is, the Monaco is still my favorite watch and the one in my collection I cherish the most.

There are millions of us who don't care that the complication isn't quite as fancy as those made by delicate makers like AP or Patek. They make a handful of watches a year still. @@NaNa-wj8tw so what exactly is total rubbish, Hans Wilsdorf was NOT a watch maker, he WAS a business man and has made some impressive business and marketing moves. Don't forget bro, facts don't care about your feelings, so don't get triggered. I'm not trying to take away from Rolex's desirability, but that doesn't equate to watch making abilities. Biggest disappointment? Finding out that my Dad called his H Samuel "Everite" watch his "H Samuel Neverite" - because it never was right! I had so looked forward to having the perfect watch one day. Ah, well, at least I now have a Speedy.

The Casio F-91W, to me, is very disappointing. Classic, yes, but spend even just a fiver more and you can get better illumination, better water resistance, better visibility. Then again that fiver is a 50% price increase so… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Andrew you need more clarification on your submariner and US Navy information. The model tested was the 6538 which was approved for the Special Boat Service (SBS Royal Navy) with a few mods the 1958 report downed it for (wider bezel, fixed kings) and became the 6540. So it’s not exactly like it wasn’t used ever for military purposes.

Odd that the Navy report on the Rolex Submariner contains a ZIP code for the Experimental Dive Unit at the Washiington Navy Yard. ZIP codes were first used starting July 1, 1963.

It was not a zip code it was postal district/zone number issued by the United States Post Office Department, they started May 1943.

@@garyboyle695, those were 1- or 2-digit codes, but the increased volume of mail necessitated the 5-digit codes (Zone Improvement Plan, aka ZIP) in 1963.

Perhaps it was not released to the public until 1963 or later? I thought that maybe the military got zip codes early on, but that's not the case: even a four-digit code was only a matter of discussion in 1961. Another fun possibility is that it just took that long to complete the paperwork!

AP royal oak is disappointing for so many reasons. Decent watch design, but way out of line with reality. One watch brand imo. Lazy and played out!

Thanks for the USN story behind the Submariner design. Looking at my Duro, and the design language from the USN engineering sketch, makes my decision on my watch ever better, thanks Andrew.

Notable that boring equates with old traditional watches in the first three examples. Trading off of laurels earned fifty or more years ago is boring whether your a watch, an uncle or a pin-up girl back in the day.

If you can't use a Navitimer slide rule that's not the fault of the watch. As you yourself admitted pre electronic calculators it was a slide rule or an even more time consuming book of log tables. How did we ever get anything done?? 😂😂

I would agree on the Speedmaster. The watch is quite a disappointment on the wrist. Matte dial. Painted indices for £7k? Please…
