My biggest watch mistake: I bought the wrong watch. I loved loved loved the IWC Portuguese. Was travelling with family and walked into a watch shop that sold IWC. They didn't have the Portuguese, but they did have an Ingenieur. It was nice, fit my wrist, and my wife liked it. It was my second-choice dial color, and it wasn't a Portuguese, but I bought it anyway - to get into the brand. I regretted the purchase almost immediately and sold it for a loss several years later. Lesson learned. Buy what you love. The end.

To be fair, Andrew, none of us could have predicted how desirable FP Journe became. Many independents with great designs end up in obscurity. You absolutely made the right and sensible decision there, even though it might not feel like it. …but selling your Royal Oak wasn’t hahahaha.

​@@AndrewMorganWatches if this makes you feel any better about missing out on the Chronometre Bleu, I am probably the Lord of the Boneheads. About 13 years ago, I was engaged to a very wealthy woman. We had a great relationship and we're going to get married. I always loved watches and already had a few nice ones of my own. Explorer II, Speedmaster Professional and a Datejust. During our relationship, she bought me a Daytona, a Seamaster Planet Ocean and a very, very nice watch when we got engaged. Fast forward a few years and the relationship went bad. We fought and when we finally broke up, in the midst of yelling and arguing, for reasons I will never know, I gave her back the very, very nice watch and told her, "here, you can have your damn watch back!" and gave it back. I didn't have to. I didn't give the others back, she didn't ask for them or want them. To this day, whenever I think about it, I want to go and throw myself in front of a fast moving train. The very, very nice watch I gave back and could have, should have, my God, should have kept was a Patek Philippe 5002p Sky Moon Tourbillon. Not as nice as the 6002 but a very, very nice watch indeed that I will never see again. Yes, I think I am the Ultimate Bonehead.

I used to subscribe to Watchfinder but it got boring seeing and hearing about watches that other people could own but not me. The one thing that kept me there was listening to your insights into the wonderful world of watches. I was over the moon when I found Talking Hands and now this is my favourite channel and I love listening to your insights again without the need to see what the very privileged can flaunt in our faces, I like to think they buy the watches because they can not because they love watches like "Wot we do!"

You fill a place on the market that is cheeky, funny, smart, talking all sorts of watches extravagant and small but also focusing on tastes and budget that are more mid-luxury(unlike the extreme wealth of or lower price of others). Andrew, it takes guts to start your own KZbin channel and “open up the kimono” to KZbinrs worldwide! The crazy thing about watch collecting is many of us have a story about not pulling the trigger on a specific watch that was unknown before it became valuable after the rest of collectors discovered it. But just remember everything is cyclical, and you will have a second chance to buy your grail watch again!

That’s brilliant Andrew. Making mistakes is often the best, if expensive, way to learn. With regards to highly complicated watches, such as the IWC all bells and whistles you mentioned. On top of the fact I prefer uncluttered dials, this is one the reasons I love no date three-handers. You simply cannot go wrong.

You are true with lost opportunities: Some years ago I found a mint AP Royal Oak for 16.000€ which I did not purchase and still banning me for that. Your VC story rings bells for me. I’ve dropped my JLC master control a couple of times and poof, off to the watch repair shop. Dumb, yes. Most recently I did it at an AD when I was buying a GO SeaQ panoramadate. Oh I felt stupid. I haven’t bought an annual or perpetual calendar for the very reason you mention - I know I’d blow it on day 1. Re FP Journe - sad but hey, only buy the watch you can afford, in cash. So you should have no regrets!

one more thing is, after you've shown your face and be clear of who you are, big brands will want to work with you or sell special limited pieces to you. You will be able to rewrite lots of mistakes you missed out on... except the FPJ. They do not care if you have a social media following.

I bought a Moser and sold it at a huge loss purely because I wore it rarely. I mean, what kind of criterion is that for deciding whether to keep a watch?!? Anyway, took a bloodbath on it and can’t afford one now as everyone else has realised how great they are. So I’ll miss that one forever.

I could have bought a NOS Rolex Submariner "Smurf" (116619) at retail, but since I just got an 114060 3 weeks earlier and I did not really like the date cyclops i said, "no" So my advise is do your research and know what you are saying no to.

In 2006, you could buy Omega Speedmaster Moonwatches for £1000 in Hatton Garden, as many as you wanted without box or papers and the Rolex Blusey Submariner in rough condition for £4000 a pop from the 1990s era. But I didn’t pull the trigger 😩😩😩

Apple brought out a device called a newton ten years before the iPhone and it ran on an ARM processor before anyone new what an ARM processor was. Unless you had an Archimedes. ARM decided to float on the stock market and the shares all but crashed. A desperate twenty nine year old ringing up the banks for a personal loan anything to drum up money. Eventually gave up when your a twenty nine years old your pretty much have nothing and are worthless even if you know a dead cert when you see one. Still hurts twenty five years later.

The first time I ever heard of fpj must have been between 2004 and 2006 and like u I knew at first sight what I was looking at. FpJ and MB&F are my 2 favorite watch companies. I knew then that FPJ would be highly sought after. Prices on the 2nd were rather affordable. But I Knew it was only a matter of time.

To be fair i'm not convinced by the FPJ. I worry having a movement out of gold will wear significantly quicker than other movements leading to multiple servicing visits where you are introduced to the real cost of the watch And i think there is a design ahead of substance aesthete going on with the watches. The crown looks really really annoying to actually wind or use and some of the design choices have a fin de siecle/ art nouveau direction i'm not 100% comfortable with. Now Gronefeld on the other hand; H Moser; Laurent Ferrier. They can pretty much take my money.

I may have ended a sort of happy marriage by commenting on a watch once. Figure five people at a restaurant table. Two rich guys comparing their Submariner and Chronomat, me with my Russian ticker and the uncontrolable urge to show off my watch-knowledge. The lady I had gone out with and her best friend, who happened to wear a Daytona with a green dial on a hideously appropriate green leather strap. One of the rich guys was her boyfriend and she was married, too, but her husband wasn't there. That was back in the day, when Daytonas could be bought without having to sell a house first and then kidnap an AD's first born. The Daytona-lady was so kind to take off her watch and hand it to me so I could take a closer look. Through the exhibition back I saw a cheap Chinese movement and the sub-dials showed a calendar-mechanism instead of the expected chronograph. When I called out the watch as a fake, I thought that its owner would have known that all along. Alas, she didn't. And the watch was a gift from her husband. Things got very quiet at that table and we parted ways very soon after that. And I have never seen anyone from that company again, including the lady I had set my eyes on that night.

Journe's popularity is mostly the result of heavy marketing from The Watchbox. It's very much like the stock market. It's unpredictable what someone is going to pump and dump to increase their own profits.
