Hey Andrew! I recently earned my PMP as well as my PSMI, and PSMII. Your materials assisted me in those accomplishments! Thanks! I agree with you 100% as it does take more than certifications. I've continued to study daily even after receiving my certifications. I've even hired a mentor who is a Sr. Project Manager. All of my previous experience comes from running my own companies over the last 10 years. With that being said, I have a lot of transferable skills but not necessarily the structure. From interviewing and studying I find that each organization has their own way of running projects and regardless of what we study, we will have to learn the company's way of doing things. With that being said do you recommend new PMP holders to revisit your course? Purchase your book? or is there another way you see fit for us to gain the actual knowledge needed that we would apply on a daily basis? A lot of us studied hard for months to get this PMP and followed your suggestions and now it seems like we're being called out for doing so. Just looking for a little clarity and direction. I appreciate all of your contributions to the PM community! I look forward to your response!

Let me tell you the REAL reason! A LOT of folks get certified CHATING!, thats right, cheating in the PMP exam!!!! PMP is one of the most cheated certification in the field of IT! Mostly there are lots of groups in india and worlwide that help people cheating in the exam and the number is ASTONISHINGLY large! You pay them money online and they will give the exam on behalf of you no matter in which country you are!!! Unless PMP only authorizes designated centers for certifications and change their format, this will ONLY destroy the real examinees and the PMP body itself! Please find out more on this!! 🙏

Very valid points, Andrew. But I think that some people need to have the chance to apply what they've learned through experience. They learn the material just for the exam and if they are not given the opportunity to apply the material through working in the field they don't fully understand and grasp the concepts. But, to get a PMP you must have at least 36 months of work experience in the project management field. So everybody should have sufficient experience because it is a prerequisite.

I remember working on projects and we only used some of the tools. Even to customized waterfall approach. A lot of what I learned with out the PMP was how things were done. Andrew made a valid point to which if was not paying attention I would not have passed the exam. " Learn the proper systems and process from PM OK " In the early chapters there were times I said I know this tool or method and their were times my reaction was we don't do it that way ? The reality is that if you invested the time and money for become the best PM you can be the certification is just a key to unlock bigger more fulfilling jobs.

This would be my observation too. If a manager is interviewing someone with a PMP cert and no prior experience… you either should expect to do some on-the-job mentoring… or interview people who have prior experience. This really seems like a failing on the part of the Recruiter/Manager 😒

I was working as a UNIX sysadmin coordinating changes in operations when I was suggested to change my job to a project manager. To my knowledge PMI company requires some proof of practice (let say a reference to your manager who confirms) in project management before you are allowed to be certified - I am not sure whether that is still the case. There is nothing you cannot understand in PMBOK by PMI so get a book, educate yourself and analyze how you execute processes and work with knowledge areas in your private life and your job. Once you understand how you have been using the theory in practice, you are not a paper tiger anymore.

Allrighty, I can add to that. Before you start worrying about your image of being a paper tiger (I understand the insecurity), I would say that maybe consider worrying about flushing significant amount of company money in the toilet by failing a project due to ineffective project management. And you know what helps you not to do that? Having at least the book knowledge on what to do, and in which order 😅 Being a PM is dealing with lots of ambiguity and having the structure, the framework, the discipline - helps you drive through. Honestly, I don't know how I survived the first 2 project without proper scope and risk documentation. Lots of tears I guess :D

Michael, Take Andrews course and study hard and become a PMP. It is very rewarding. also, the last time I heard, they weren't issuing PMP certifications, MBAs or commencement speeches in taverns during happy hour -- meaning, you need to study on weekends. Take it seriously. I was a tech engineer who made the transition and have never looked back and have no regrets.

Hi Andrew, I took you class and just passed the PMP thanks to you a couple months ago. As with any certification it covers a broad range of info, and then once you start at a job is where you learn the most and actually apply the info as needed. The PMP is an especially enormous body of knowledge, and now that I've passed the test I'm not waking up everyday to study and drill the concepts. I'm focused on getting a job, and I'm expecting the right job to consider the full scope of what I bring to the table, not give me a PMP test in the interview. You obviously are the expert, but remember that a key part of obtaining the PMP is proving a lot of prior project management experience. The test confirmed that I also have the ability and diligence to study and pass a tough test. But the most important thing isn't the test, what's more important is I've managed a ton of projects, I have the proven experience and compunction to excel at the next company that gives me a shot. And as far as the PMP jargon, I don't have it memorized, I don't know if I could pass the test again right now today without studying again, but I do know I understand all the concepts and can look up any tools and lingo as needed to do my next job. That's my take, and thanks again for all you do!

Your orange shirt adds to the passion of this video - like fire! I am currently studying for the exam and won't take it until I understand as much as I possibly can. My house is covered in post it notes, charts, definitions, formulas, and various ideas that I am trying to learn - not just memorize for the exam. I have done some deep dives into concepts that I needed more practice on like earned value management and critical path. I feel strongly that if I am going to pass the test then I need to understand the concepts enough to be able to teach it to my kids. So my teen daughters have been enduring earned value management practice with me on some of the endeavors we have undertaken as family like fostering litters of kittens and our vegetable garden. They might think I'm nuts, but I'm learning. And so are they! Thanks for all you do, Andrew!

As a software developer with over 30 years of experience with 20 years of managing projects and teams, I have been thinking about getting my PMP for a while now. I am a huge aviate for agile. I was very happy to see this video. One of the biggest issues I think we face is places commercializing Certs just for the sake of the money while actually destroying the value of the Cert. I just bought you PMP Cert course the book and signed up for the 35-hour course. I have also taken most of the courses on Pluralsight that qualify for training for the Cert. When said and done, I'll have around 90 hours, plus years of experience. I am glad I found and all of the material you provide. Thank you.

I agree with what you said. Taking a class to get the 35 hours to take a test and get a certification without really understanding and learning is worthless and ultimately leads to the certification being degraded and discounted by employers. However, employers who will not even interview me even with 15 years of project management experience (more than 4000 hours), SCRUM Master certification, and Agile Project facilitator overvalue a certification. Before I completed your course thru Udemy, I had a hard time even getting an interview, because I did not have the 3 letters PMP on my resume. After I completed your course and took the test, and added those letters, I had multiple interviews nd a job offer in 90 days. My real world job experience was the same, but now, my resume passed the software screening and the HR admins and got to a hiring manager and I was able to share my experience and knowledge in an interview. The PMP Certification is a crutch used by HR departments to avoid blame for hiring mistakes. I did like your course and your study guide. I like it was knowledgeable, very thorough, and I did learn new things. But ultimately, it was to complete 35 hours, to take a test, to get an interview.

I believe part of the issue is, most, if not all employment opportunities that pay well, prefer a PMP certification. Why not find the person whose a right fit for the environment and train them up. They offer more for certification, so most, if not all people become certified.

Oooooohhhhh Andrew! The filling you have doing this video is exactly the same I have had few days ago when I saw someone giving 35 hours PMP training for 4 days of lessons. When I shared my disappointment for such practise, they tried to convince me that if they are expert in project management, It is possible. I closed the discussion by telling them that they don't want to have certified people who are able to do the job, but the person who can give them money very quickly and learn the basics of project process on the field. I love this video. Thank you for making this very clear. It is a tragedy when someone has a good memory but has no real-world application and practice under their belt. You got my respect through this video. One thing that gets on my nerves as well is this movement on social media that attacks "managers" and exalts "leaders". It seems to me that a false light can be put on project "managers" to make them seem like they are cold, tyrannical, etc. In reality, we take our job seriously, try to abide by the PMI Code of Ethics, and get things done in a professional and ethical way.

Wow what a powerful and mind boggling video. I personally agree with you 500% and i have always told my juniors that getting the certification does not make you a better project manager. You can study for 2 weeks and pass but that does not make you a good PM. I have met people who can not differentiate between an issue and a risk but are PMP certified. Continuous professional development, studying and keeping yourself up to date is critical. Certification is good because you can prove that you have studied but you have to remain relevant and up to date with the changing trends.

You are absolutely right, but most time organizations looking for Certified Project Manager caused it, as some of them don't look beyond PMP Certification when recruiting, even if you have years of both Field and Office Practice, instead of given you the interview opportunity to proof yourself, once you don't have the PMP Certification the interview in not for you, But project management is beyond passing the PMP Certification as there is clear difference between passing the PMP Exams and ability to use the passed Certification to complement project knowledge you have acquired in your years of working in organization. My advised is organization should minimized too much emphasis on certification during interview, company can at time motivate successful candidate without Certification to get one, if he has expected skills and experience needed for the job

When I took my 35 hour class, the first thing the instructor asked was, "Why are you taking this course?" And I really thought it was a good way to start the class. My reason was that I'm in a PMO with all new members and no set processes. It's a bit chaotic because everyone is running their projects differently, but we all have the same type of deliverables. While I have managed projects before I joined this PMO, I wanted to become better to help myself and my peers. Taking the class really helped me understand good practices. I studied for 6 months after the class to make sure I knew the content and was able to apply it. It also got me really interested in agile since all of my projects to date have been traditional. It is frustrating that so many people get the cert just to pad their resume. I see the PMP cert as a way to improve myself and others and to network within my state chapter.

I was surprised how many KZbinrs showed up in my suggestions saying they finished in two weeks studying, but seeing their methods as you noted it’s just the paper, and gosh PM involves much more, I am loving your course because I am a PM but working as functional lead and a lot you show is making me either understand more what I am doing or either expanding what I didn’t know. I have been on this PMP journey for about a year now. I came across your book and your videos in April 2023. I will admit that I underestimated the amount of stress taking this test would actually bring. It wasn’t until I got into your course that I realized the gravity of the situation, I thoroughly enjoyed taking your course and it helped create a foundation in which to build my knowledge. However, to the credit of the 2-week study crowd, they did provide some additional study tools that helped further expand the knowledge I was getting in the TIA course. Overall I agree with what you are saying but I am not mad at the hackers, I’ll happily take their secrets. There are all different kinds of learning and with technology you can be introduced to all of them right from the comfort of your own home.

Andrew, I am studying your book right now for the PMP. Taking a deep dive into all chapters spending a good 3-4 days on each chapter and then another day on the exam questions. I couldn’t agree more with your assessment in this video. I will admit some frustrations in studying the material, as there is so much of it, but it has certainly sharpened my skills just reading this material. I certainly agree that this shouldn’t be something to add to the resume. I have 11 years of project management experience so far in top of another 8-9 years of technical work and I have a whole new respect for the PMP now. I also have the PE license for engineering. I think this PMP material is tougher than what I had To go through for the PE exam!

Great advice, Andrew. I took my exams on 01-04-2024. It was my first attempt and passed with 2AT and 1T. I have been managing waterfall projects for a long time, and therefore, I focused more on the Agile to get the certification. I am not looking for a job interview, but rather to help me manage projects better at my current job. I relied solely on your 35-hour course and your best-selling book to sail through. I am new to the PMP training. I have owned my own business for the last 20 years and have not even thought about developing my skills or learning anything new, other than the applications for my business. Prior to that I was a construction manager in the wireless telecom world, a retail district manager, before that I was a general manager in the restaurant industry. This is literally the first video I have watched about PMP certification and it couldn't have happened at a better time. My belief was that with a PMP cert and my years of management experience I would do well. This "rant" truly helps me focus on learning, not passing a test. It certainly brings questions to all the early 20 year olds I see that have their PMP certifications and almost no work history... I love the rant, and I agree with you about the folks who just blitz studying in a weekend boot camp without properly learning or applying PMP principles/concepts. In reality every project manager has their own style of leading projects, but the PMP framework is crucial in establishing some logical common foundation shared between projects. Having gone through the exam this year, I couldn't imagine even attempting the exam without at least 2 months of prep to actually work through and retain the material. Thanks Andrew for this. As somebody who began their travels down the PMP road just over three years ago, and sees a lot of these comments being posted on Reddit, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I went back to a well-respected University to do their Project Management Certificate at the start of the Pandemic and earned my CAPM shortly after landing a Program Management role. While I no longer need the 35 contact hours for the PMP Application as I have my CAPM, I'm still doing your Udemy course as a refresher (and actually watching them/making notes). I'll then likely watch a few YT videos and then do SH but I want to put an effort into obtaining this with a better understanding of everything instead of simply doing enough to pass an exam and get a piece of paper. As you said, letters after a name do not make a person.

Interesting 🤔 I experienced the inverse. Took the time to study and leaned into the journey of obtaining the PMP with immersive application. Ive worked in jobs and with people who aren’t certified and running projects that misapply or don’t apply proper project management methodology. I agree that neither extreme brings value to a project or company but do not feel one outweighs the other. Ultimately, there needs to be more of a balance of education and application. There are project managers with experience that don’t bother to keep up with tools and practices. i.e. waterfall vs agile. Consistent continued education is key. Period.

Well said Andrew, but I remember you once said if a person is doing 10 years project management in job, his experience won't make him necessarily to pass the PMP, while a person who is in school if went through your course and mindset without having real time experience in PM would be likely able to pass PMP. So until and unless there is a sync between PMP exam and project management real life work, we will be seeing this, as both are different. I won't have cleared my PMP without your course. 5:27 this is absolutely true. I have interviewed people who have multiple certifications in my area of work and those who don’t have certifications but relevant work experience. Sadly, I have rejected almost 90% of those who have certification. Coz they just have certification with no knowledge in the area in which they are certified! (I am ok with not having working experience). The competitive environment is unbalanced, desperate and extremely challenging. Most men want to be crowned Mr. Olympia but all aren't willing or able to pump that damn iron. This is a good advice not only for PMI certification seekers but also for university diploma's striving students. How many engineers or science diploma holders that don't succeed their job interviews because they were just studying to pass the exam and haven't tried hard to understand with real life examples what they were doing in their schools or universities.

Knowledge is an ongoing process without any age limit or processes in life. I think the principles of PMI are really good and should be known and used for managing projects! And besides why wouldn’t you want to know the best practices of managing a project to cut out risk, cost, keeping things on schedule to add the most value for your stakeholders?!

Agreed! People on Reddit are bragging about studying for 3 weeks and getting their PMPs. Personally I take the course, study the materials, go through the contents and examine my weaknesses as I go. I want to get the PMP because I have many years of experience but the certification is a beast of its own and I need coaching on that. Regardless of how "easy" they brag about getting the PMP, it's up to the hiring manager to weed out the inexperienced PMPs. I don't know who these braggers are but it's hardly ever a concern for me that they have the PMP, experience and performance is still key.

Agree totally, Andrew. I believe learning while performing the job is helping me to have better knowledge, more than the binge video watching just for the sake of exams and certifications. I initially started that way and ran through a bunch of videos but felt I did not know anything when I faced a situation in reality. Now when I encounter a situation, I acknowledge the challenge and start learning about that part. I learn something related in my free time but not in any particular order. Certification is a dream, yes. But I decided that I would first gain knowledge and, if required, get the certification. Lifelong Learning. Cheers.

I agree with you that knowing the subject and having practical experience and skills are a must. But you need PMP certification to be invited for an interview these days, so putting an effort and getting the certification asap is a good strategy to be competitive in the market. Otherwise, you are not a competitor at all.

I have done my own projects before I learned any of these principles and my project was successful. However I have to learn about project management courses and I need it to develop my skills on other scalable projects in different fields. I totally agree that one should take the PMP course to gain knowledge and be better at managing projects not only getting the certificate. I ubsolutley agree with your point of view. 😊

So, it’s funny I came across this video, because I have been a lead/foreman working under a project manager for a long time. I agree with your colleague, because I hate the fresh kid out of class, who has very little experience. I work with him, I help him realize the real world application. I get the “man your really helpful” and then he starts pawning things off on me. Then quits in a year? For a better dollar. Then I start again with another kid fresh out of class… I’ve decided to become a PM because I can do it better than them. And hearing this excites me, because I don’t have my PMP yet, but when I get it. I can get to that interview, and it sounds like if I pay attention and learn the terminology. My real world process will carry me through a lot, and hopefully I can do it!

I passed the PMP using your course, and I will constantly use it as a reference in the future for project management. PMP is my favorite cert I hold because the concepts are very applicable in the real world. Alot of other certs have concepts that change too quickly to be valuable long term.

Most of PMP is for larger project and depending on the industry you work in, your projects are not that long. A big example of that is in the application process. As a localization project manager, I have had as many as 112 projects in a month. It is very rare to get projects that last over 3 weeks. As a design/creative services project manager, the projects take longer but we are still not at the level of construction projects. I know what a risk register is but I've never had to use one because normally the opportunity we are trying to jump on is so tight that we already know like 15 of the 20 risks since they are the same risks for the same tight turnaround projects that we end up just calling those risks "Tuesday" or "Thursday". Although i kind of agree with what Andrew is saying, this also brings up the question how to get experience without experience. And using the certification as a way in to get interviews is at least one step closer to being hired than not getting interviews is. With that said, I'm using his course to study for the PMP after 10 years working as a PM. Having the PMP i think will help me pivot into more PMI friendly PM roles in industries like consumer goods, healthcare, etc
