I met Ilan, when he was 11-years old, at a F.O.N. show in which he was the drummer.

Fun fact Ilan has his own band called the New Regime and he is literally the only band member. He sings and plays all instrument in the band at advance level. He's insanely talented.

Apparently Trent Reznor never played this song in the past because its a very difficult track to reproduce live and only started doing it in 2018. Ilan is one kick ass drummer and multi instrumentalist.
@minusxero Жыл бұрын
A little more clarification: When Trent said the song was difficult to reproduce live, he hasn't ever meant the insane drumming, though he's used that as an excuse in the past. Later interviews, he's mentioned that basically all of his drummers have had the capability to play it. The issue was always the slow dirge ending not being "good enough" in a live setting. Any of the other endings they tried to do to make it more "live appropriate" just didn't feel right. It wasn't until a certain point where Trent went "fuck it" and just played it as intended anyways.

Just a fun fact about their live performances: They don't use tape or sound effects tracks. They all actually play them live on keyboards or pads.

open handed, check high on the sticks, he uses longer sticks, he writes his own music, he sings, he plays bass, guitar, piano (even classical) sight-reads music, mixes and engineers (with his bro Aaron), played woodstock at 11 (i think) and is, if not the youngest then, one of the youngest people to be admitted into the rock n roll hall of fame. Met Ilan, his other bro Daniel and Scott. All wonderful

Ilan Rubin is a STAR, there is a reason Trent has not let him get away and he has been with NIN this long. The Tension Tour really showcased him. He can do EVERYTHING, he even plays guitar. I had been waiting for YEARS for Trent to play this song live, and he said it couldn't be done to his satisfaction and he had tried during previous tour rehearsals, I figured if anyone could do it Josh Freese could, but Ilan was the ONE to do it now it has to be played at shows. I was in Chicago and when this song started, I lost my shhhh I couldn't believe it...

not many people can appreciate this. Ilan is to drums what Rach was to piano

Ilan Rubin has a beautiful to watch style. His performances at Guitar Centre Drum off are astonishing. He’s nuclear. Such a hard hitter but subtle at the same time.

There are a load of loops going on in the background. It makes it even more impressive as anyone knows playing with fast speeds loops its way easier to sound terrible. Crazy.

Finally, you've got to Ilan Rubin. He's an incredible drummer. You need to seriously check out his drum solo he did for the Guitar Centre Drum-Off. His main influences are John Bonham and Stewart Copeland, and it's such an interesting concoction to see expressed in his playing.

I saw them during their last UK tour and got to catch this live for the first time. It was absolutely amazing to see Ilan go crazy with those drum solos. Trent never used to perform The perfect drug live, just because of the drums being so difficult to recreate live. Ilan nails it every time

Great commentary. What you said at the end is almost exactly how Taylor Hawkins talked about it once in a interview, when asked about what it's like being a rock star. To which he replied something like, "Fuck that, I'm not a rock star, I'm a musician, dammit!"

You made mention about his snare tone and sound on this tour. That is in GREAT PART to Q Drum Co. that Ilan and @Jeremy Berman started years ago. IF memory serves, the snare drum is a Q Drum Co. Gentleman's Copper that is seamlessly hand-drawn and is a COMPLETE STUNNER. Like ALL Q Drum Co. Drums...they are amazing instruments and the recently passed Jeremy Berman has left a void in the drum building community that will be hard to fill. I felt you should know about one of the PRIME REASONS that snare sounds so good. Q Drum Co. and Jeremy Berman are worth investigating...Jeremy is missed terribly by ALL who knew him and OF him.

as a drummer. my fav part to play is the part when it slows tempo. it's like "finally my arms are not on fire" lol. i always ask fellow drummers, especially drummers that understand drums (thats not me, i just feel it, i don't count shit. my head is blank when i drum), do you think people who sing and play drums also don't count? like how do you count, and sing.

Something you NEED to know in context: Even though this song was originally released way back in '97, Trent Reznor refused to perform it live for over two decades because NOBODY was able to pull off that drum solo. Then Ilan joined the band. And that mad lad did it. Boy, did he do it.
@kalerug Жыл бұрын
Ilan is insane, no doubt, but there's no way Josh Freese couldn't have played this. It's always been about how Trent couldn't ever get the song to sound right live, particularly the ending.

A non-drummer here, but I believe that the original was a programmed drum machine. Any drummer who has to play these songs has to find a way to do it "as a drummer would," i.e. using drumming rudiments instead of random notes out of nowhere. Ghost notes makes sense then. Not on the original, but a way to keep the beat for a human being.

The end is not improvised actually, that's how the song goes. There was a small moment where they were off and I think that's what triggered the confusing looks. Nine Inch Nails used to not play this song live because of the end, it's just a weird place to transition from.

I actually heard your comment on Josh Freese drums as the Holy Trinity where he played the music Wish by NIN. though i like Freese, Rubin is more skilled. Trent mentioned before that they won't play live "The Perfect Drug" because it was too difficult or fast for the drummer, and here we see Rubin performing it.
