What is crazy is that I saw "A Perfect Circle" opening for NIN back in 2000, and I'm pretty sure that Josh was with them on that tour. I bet that tour is where Trent met/noticed him and then ended up poaching him later. He's such an incredible drummer, it's no wonder that Trent would want him.

I got the chance to buy Chris Vrenna (original NIN drummer) drum set. He talked about how awesome Josh was in the studio. He said he could listen to a song once or twice, go in and bang out the drums first try. He said he wouldn't write anything down, wouldn't talk to anyone, wouldn't ask what an artist wanted. Would just nail it the first time. He said that's why he is in such high demand.

@Salvador Diaz del Valle Santana Yes! When I saw it on Reverb I couldn't believe it. I've got one just like it, mine only had 4 Tom's and no snare and a virgin bass drum. I really just wanted his for the snare drum and the 18" floor tom. The snare drum alone goes for $1200. Chris is a really cool, laid back guy. He took my wife and I out to eat and we sat there and talked for four hours. Got to see the Grammy he won with that drumset, saw all the Marlyn Manson paintings he owns and the David Bowie stuff he's got hanging up. But of course my dumb butt was worried about the horrible storm that was about to start so I didn't get a pic with him, autograph or a C.O.A., wish I could get the COA...

I love your videos so much that I’m going to share a Josh story here that only maybe a dozen people know of. I’m not naming the band because this is rather embarrassing for them. A buddy owned an indy label & signed a band. He flew them to Cali to record an album & the day before the sessions started the singer/leader of the band fired their drummer & put him on a plane back home that night. Obviously that was a stupid, stupid move. The studio was booked & paid for & they only had rough demos to use for reference. So the label head does what any smart record exec would do, he gets on the phone & tracks down Josh. Josh had commitments only 5 days later but he agreed to get the album recorded. So they hand deliver the rough demos to him, he listened & figured out what he wanted to do in 1 day & the next morning he was recording & he wrapped it up in 2 days in the studio. A band he’s never heard! 1 day of learning the songs & 2 days to complete the recordings! A full length album! That’s insane! Here’s the hilarious (and embarrassing part) because the band had made a huge mistake & they were in a monster pickle, Josh was able to negotiate back end points on sales & a LOT of them! It sold over 15 million copies & he paid his house off for 3 DAYS WORK! Practice! Practice! Practice! And be smart about your schedule & always keep windows available to accept last minute gigs. If you’ve got the chops you’ve got the upper hand in negotiations. And if you’re a band leader, don’t make any rash, knee jerk decisions like canning a member prior to recording because it would literally cost you millions of $.

Best NIN drummers in my opinion…..& before you all come for me, I’ve seen NIN live on every tour since Self Destruct….including the European With Teeth / Performance era warm up shows with Jerome Dillion…& the time they played a super intimate show at the Scala in London. 1: Ilan Rubin 2: Jerome Dillon 3: Chris Vrenna 4: Josh Freese (I’ll omit Jeff Ward, Alex Carapetis & Ron Musarra as they didn’t play full tours). Rubin takes the top spot for me, not only because he’s an incredible drummer / multi instrumentalist; but also for his overall contribution to NIN….I mean, why else would Trent select him to join the lineup that was inducted to the RRHOF?? (Rubin bejng the youngest ever inductee). He’s the longest serving drummer & also the fourth longest serving member of the band after Reznor, Fink & Cortini.

Perfect harmony of drum and composition

He is what you would call a quintessential session drummer which for real musicians professional musicians we know that means he comes in when your drummer can't do the things the producers asking him or whatever the song is asking him because session drummers and session players don't make mistakes and they don't take a credit often

He played with Black Light burns saw them live in Detroit in 2007 was amazing. Wes Borland jumped of the stage right when they were done and started to BS with everyone and take pictures was great times.

I never got to see NIN live with Josh, but I did see them with Ilan Rubin and it's one of the top 2 concerts I've ever been to. Ilan was 18-19 at the time and a total monster

Yes he's a monster alright

I got to see IIan when he was with Denver Harbor in a small club in Nebraska. No idea who he was then but he was great behind the kit.

I had the pleasure of meeting Josh when my Band INDUBIOUS (shameless plug) was opening for Sublime w/Rome. Such a super nice guy, he offered to move his drums back a bit to make room for my kit in front of his (also a polite way to tell me that we're not sharing backline and setup your drums) that run I happened to be experimenting with a digital kick drum (everything else normal acoustic kit/cymbals) the kick was so shallow we didn't have to move any of his gear. Not the greatest story, but that's my brief moment with Josh, I kick myself for not getting a photo... PS I don't use the digital kick anymore... without tactile monitoring the electronics lack the real world feel/vibration

Absolutely love Josh's drumming on Offspring's Hammerhead. Hope to see them on tour this year, they hired him for it. :)

Agreed - he's like the Jerry Garcia of Drumming. Only just discovered him when I heard he's drumming for the Foo Fighters. Soo fucking DEAD on smack in the center and for the amount of beats he's getting in, making it look effortless. So tight!

Josh Freese is my man! The NIN "SLIP EP" live rehersals are a feast for any drummers eye to watch and well worthy of an reaction video. If you are looking for that holy trinity snare sound, look no further :) Alternatively you can check out The Vandals - Live @ House of Blues - Josh Freese Cam version. "Pizza Tran" slaps so hard!!!

That Slip rehearsal stuff is magic. Both he and Robin (the lead guitarist) elevated Trent's already-amazing arrangement to new levels.

My favourite drummers are Josh Freeze, Dave Grohl and Danny Carey! Not only they are fantastic drummers but they are hard hitting and exciting to watch. Love your channel Andrew, keep it up!

Saw Josh play, only once. Ironically, when A Perfect Circle had their debut tour, with NIN. If you want to be an overlooked musician, there is no better way to achieve that, than to be a session drummer. It's like blue on black.

Best rock/pop drummer in the world. His timing/subdivision work may be the best ever for this genre (rock/pop)

Colaiuta, Sucherman, Phillips, Bissonette and Arnoff for the win over Josh IMO.

Between Josh's already established talent and Trent Reznor's near psychotic rehearsal training for his live band before tour it leads to great moments such as this.

I am a HUGE josh freese fan. I got into the drums because of danny carey, but growing up listening to a perfect circle really made me fall in love with josh freese. glad foo fighters chose a very credible replacement to the late and great taylor hawkins.
