Nine Inch Nails is and has always been a masterclass of musicians. It may sound like noise at times but it is in fact beautiful music.

NIN is Trent with the other members making up the band solely for live performances. This isn’t to take away from their talent but they r simply performing their scripted parts.

Saying “keep your shoulders and elbows in a nice relaxed position” over a still frame of Ilan’s shoulders in his ears, hair flying around, and elbows above his head is great😂

If you ever get to see NIN live you simply have to. Trent essentially writes all but the drums played on the kit (though he made the solo for Piggy in a mic check. The man is a musical beast. He even does saxophone among other things). The beauty is seeing everyone in the touring group move between the instruments. I don't think 1 live band member played just 1 instrument at the show I went to. Everyone moved around depending on the sets needs

The first time I heard Piggy, I was absolutely destroyed by the drum solo. I have never once played drums in my life, but I was instantly blown away by the writing of the drums. This performance was absolutely magical to watch on top of it all. What an amazing talent.

Regarding your comments at the end about drummers doing a Led Zeppelin show, there’s no drummer I’d rather see than Ilan Rubin.
@astonmartinvee8 Жыл бұрын
Ilan Rubin is great and so was Josh Freese. They have been my favorites.
@davidanderson1639 Жыл бұрын
Having seen NIN on every UK tour since the Self Destruct tour, I was a little unsure of how Rubin might slot into the band; but now, seeing as he’s the longest serving member of the live band after Reznor & Robin Fink, I’m so glad Trent gave him the gig. I personally never felt Freese was a solid fit for the live element of NIN; he felt like just a hired gun for the shows. Where as the likes of Rubin, Dillion & Vrenna have all brought something very unique to their roles. Had Dillion not become seriously ill after the first few shows on the With Teeth tour, I’m certain he’d have remained as the drummer. 1: Ilan Rubin 2: Jerome Dillion 3: Chris Vrenna 4: Josh Freese 5: Jeff Ward

So glad he went ham at the end of piggy. The original is nuts, all live samples (does that make sense? Probably not. Live raw drum sounds played by Trent then reconstructed/sequenced by him.) and the drum "solo" is just insane. Ilan did it justice. I think he played march slightly different, the floor tom on the beat, where I think the original is slightly after, but I'd have to listen to it. May just be a drag/delay because of the sample used on the album. I liked it though. Big hitter, and big pocket really well placed notes especially in the non-album parts. His own additions/flourishes. Noice.

Not that I want a medal or anything, but I did mention this guy to you a couple of times in comments in the past because I knew you were seriously missing out, but at least finally he's been brought to your awareness thanks to some legend of a Patron. I'd be happy if you watched all of his drumming videos because they're all lessons in ability, taste, and groove and you're right, Ilan is of the School of Bonham with some sprinkling of Copeland in there. Please, PLEASE watch some more of his videos.

Musicians are amazing. I don't know how these people do this night after night - I fall apart on any timing that isn't 4/4. Awesome drummer, and a great video, it's so exciting to learn more about music and just how much work musicians put in to get to this level. Also never expected Trent to sound so good live after years of shrieking himself hoarse. Ilan is an absolute BEAST on those drums.

Good morning from New England Andrew... Although I've never dug in to who sat on the throne over the yrs for NIN I certainly understood that whoever it was had to be a great drummer and musician bc to the best of my recollection most of the drummers that did play with Trent were multi instrumentalist..This guy is GOOD...I wonder if he has any drum line experience bc of how choked up on the stick he is...Great to discover another amazing drummer..🤘✌️

That drum sound is ridiculous!! So massive and clean, seriously the record and mixing engineer did a phe-no-menal job!!!! The drumming on those two versions of the songs is insane, so tasty and refined, not overly complicated but everything is creative and audacious! Hearing about the Rosanna shuffle - did you check Illuminate from Baard Kolstad yet? :P

The funny part is when compared to the original (studio) track, he is actually playing it the "easy" way, with sort of a more straight temp. One of the many reasons this song was so noteworthy when it was released is that the drum pattern is actually sort of stuttery smooth. Nothing against the playing, it is just a little different overall.

ELO were SO unique! I cant think of any other bands, even those that Jeff Lynne or Bev Bevan were in, that sound even similar. So many fantastic hits! My fave is the rocker, Do Ya?, from this same album, I believe. I think I love it because of the guitar slide in it, but its a great song. This is also one of my top faves, tho! I was 9 when this came out in 1976. Such great memories :). Its funny how such sad lyrics can be put to music that is almost uplifting.

For the first transition I think Trent trolled him a bit, normally he ends his line and there's a silence for 2-3 seconds before the drums kick back in... This time he stretched his delivery... lol... Ilan was my favourite NIN tour drummer of all times, personally, so much power in each hit... Normally I would scoff at a Bonzo comparison, but in his case I think it's apt.. They both invested most of their level ups into power... They both also play on oversize heads...

I heard you say you don't really care about drum setup even including your own, I kinda felt like i lost a little respect right there in my heart. That's definitely important to ones character in their drumming. But You might've meant that you don't want to get into it in that you know it's something people might argue about but yeah it definitely matters.
