Hey from the creator of the original video! Thanks for an amazing reaction video. Kai is indeed amazing and makes the licks and tricks look like a walk in the park. And on top of all the skills he always plays for the song. I have a plenty of drumcam stuff on my channel and also plenty more Kai. Ghost Love Score is super popural and it does have some brain twisting insane drumming towards the end. All the Nightwish videos have been done by recording the actual acoustic sound from the stage with a couple of recorders. Maybe next time I get to work with actual multitrack for even better audio.

I wish we had more drum-centric footage of Jukka as well. I like aspects of both drummers' playing... Kai has outrageous chops, while Jukka had that power and the ability to sit the pocket way back even while cruising along on the most metal tunes. I couldn't pick a favorite if you put a gun to me... Jukka wrote all that phenomenal stuff like the outro of Ghost Love Score for example, but then Kai and Marko took it to new heights live and made it basically my favorite moment in all of rock music. Gonna miss Marko... totally underrated on bass. Let these guys be their best drum selves.

As far as I know, Kai goes RLRLRL on the straight 8-trips. The alternating lead doing singles is easier in the end, although Kaitsu is such a machine that he could probably do it any way he likes. Exactly how Kai plays a passage is not set in stone, it could be any kind of way depending on what he feels like on that day. Kai is ambidextrous, he is left handed from the start but when he started to learn how to play drums (1976?) he did it right handed just like everyone else. His drum kit is basically symmetric left and right side, Hi-Hat on the right is fixed closed, the left one has normal function. Cheers /B.

@mbo1913 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewRooneyDrums - You are welcome! I was going to write more but something popped up and I had to cut it short, I'll bang it in now instead. I was listening to an interview with Kai Hahto a couple of days ago (for the second time), and he said that he usually learns how to play a song four ways just to keep himself interested (and challenged). First the "normal" way like a right handed drummer, then everything flipped over like a left handed drummer (explains the symmetric set-up, doesn't it?). The third way to play is crossed over diagonally and the fourth way is crossed over diagonally in the other direction. The Drum Cam video of "Weak Fantasy" has already been mentioned in other comments, from the same channel as this video (Antti Kangasaho). In the same interview Kai was asked what his favorite song was for improvisations and his answer was "Weak Fantasy". He knows the Lead-In bit and the Lead-Out to the song, but what he does between that is all a "spur-of-the-moment" thing. I believe he is improvising a bit in other songs too, the end of "Ghost Love Score" at Rock In Rio has a pretty massive outro. Kai is doing other things too in that song, like throwing his drumstick at a cymbal and catching it when it bounces back. Not just once but several times. Hope this didn't get too lengthy. Cheers / B.

Since Wintersun and the London Philharmonic Orchestra have already been mentioned, I'll go in a bit of a different direction with "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" from Buenos Aires in 2018. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmOZo5Ksdr6EZrM This is not a drum cam, rather you're seeing the song from the audience's perspective, but it does have some very good close-ups of Kai and it's also one of the more drum intensive Nightwish songs. It's an older song from 1998 that has been redone with their current vocalist, Floor Jansen. This was during their Decades tour where they revisited a lot of their older material.
@mbo1913 жыл бұрын
Oh Yes, I'll second that! I'm sorry but I can't find the right word for it, saying that Kai is a machine, a beast, a monster, a metronome, whatever - it just isn't enough, it doesn't cover it all. Let's just say that he is Kai. Cheers / B.

For me as a guy who knows Nightwish and even the song it's really funny and strange to basically only here the drums on this one. But since lead singer Floor often steals the show with her otherwordly performances it is a refreshing new perspective! When it comes to Kai, it seems to me through the double kick and his usage of the toms as if he would play a "constant fill" through longer phases in many songs which fits really nicely to the high energy / metal style of the band.

I always alternate, rlr, lrl, rlr, lrl.. thats also what he's doing in the video. If you just jog and play a straight 4/4 groove over the top of those triplets it starts to feel natural. That's probably the best way to learn how to play double bass. Jogging with straight 4/4 over the top.

“Is that tracks or is that a live orchestra?” - Tracks and also neither tracks nor live orchestra. The orchestral parts are a combination of back tracks recorded by the London Philharmonic (another group I forget) as well as synth patches by the keyboardist. Pleasant surprise here. Bit of a backstory/context to prep you before you start looking for a studio version of this song with Kai or something along those lines: Nightwish has been around for about 25 years. Original members all from Finland. Their main lane for most of that 25 years has been symphonic metal along side some power metal and folk metal. 95% of the music is written and composed by the keyboard most Tuomas Holopanein. Couple line up changes throughout the years: * vocalists in 2005 and again in 2013 * added full time 6th member in 2013 who plays everything (Irish bag pipes, flutes, whistles, guitar, bazuki, e-bow) * 2015 original drummer (Jukka) stepped down for medical reasons and asked Kai to take his spot Kai’s long time band is Wintersun and is still involved with it, but it’s fair to say his “full time band” is Nightwish. So I say all that to let you know any recording before 2015 of Nightwish won’t have Kai. Jukka was power and energy and Kai is precision and stamina. Live watching Jukka play, but technically speaking Kai is where it’s at. I’m not a drummer, but I enjoy professionals discussing their craft. New subscriber here. I love a good drum cam and look forward to more of what you got to offer. I highly recommend checking out some of their full tracks from live shows. Nightwish music is some of the most seemingly casual, but intricate music I’ve listen to in a long time. Shame songs over 3minutes never get radio play these days. To answer your question about 8th note triplets on double bass drums I would would say most drummers alternate right-left all the way through. Nightwish plays to a backing track. London Philharmonic if I'm not mistaken. One thing I like about watching Nightwish live is that they all seem to be enjoying themselves, having fun, enjoying the music, each other, and the crowd. Always makes you wish you were there so you could be part of it as well. As others have mentioned, Kai is the second drummer for Nightwish. The original drummer, Jukka, had to leave for health reasons. You'll likely get a lot of suggestions to see him (Jukka) in action, but (to me) one of the most impressive is their live tribute to Pink Floyd (not really a cover, they kind of make it their own), "High Hopes". There was some turmoil in the band (this was the original singer's last concert, but she didn't know it. She was offstage for a wardrobe change during the number), and Jukka very clearly has a migraine. You won't hear it in his playing, but he shows it in his body language. You definitely need to see Kai in the Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars at Sonic Pump Studio video! Not only for Kai but because it's a masterpiece!

The way I play these patterns is RLRLRL with the triplet feel under the quarters on the hands…it’s classic double pattern.

Nice video as always Andrew. For triplets personally I tend to go full single strokes cuz it's more comfortable to keep at it while adding tons of fills and accents in cymbals at the same time, but with a bit of practice it gets easier to do the same with heel-toe on the right foot in a 2-1 patern. Both ways work pretty well for tempo consistency. ;)

Kai was asked by Jukka the original drummer and founding member of NIGHTWISH to take over for him due to chronic insomnia, Kai has been Jukka's drum tech and they're close friends but very different types of drummers, Kai is more of the traditional ROCK drummer only extremely accurate with blinding speed and Jukka is more like John Bonham , he has a deep lower tone to his kit when he's thundering away back there and while Kai adds his own unique flair to it, but Jukka is a live performer," BOMBASTIC "with his facial expressions and exaggerated movements but the guys commenting here aren't hardly exaggerating about Kai's skill! watch him with Wintersun and you'll see that on display also he's got a video "LICKS AND TRICKS" where he shows you some of how he does certain parts, including swiveling his left foot to close the hi-hats while simultaneously playing double bass, it's mind blowing how he comes up with things in order to play what he wants to play

Nightwish's original drummer Jukka is fun to watch, a real showman on the drums, and a hard hitter. He developed a severe insomnia problem and had to stop performing. Kai was asked by his good friend Kai to take over for him. Nightwish is a Symphonic Metal band and as a 70-year-old American fan of European bands especially Nightwish I haven't listened to much else (well I did add SK and Japanese metals) in music. I started out as an Elvis and BeachBoy fan. Lol. I am a big Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa fan as well. Kai's idol is Buddy Rich.

This songs drums were composed by the previous in 1999, Jukka Nevalainen, a groove master in drumms! And style. But Kai is doing it 99% perfect!!

It's been a while since you've done another Kai Hahto video, I think it would be fun if you did a double reaction because I also noticed you haven't done a reaction to NIGHTWISH yet, Kai is their drummer now, he was asked by Jukka Nevelainen their original drummer (who had to step down and retire from drumming in 2015 due to chronic insomnia) to take over for him as drummer for the band, Kai and Jukka have been close friends for years and he used to be the drum tech. for Jukka, who by the way is my favorite drummer and inspired me to get back into drumming . You've said you've never heard NIGHTWISH before so it would be interesting if you did a reaction to (NIGHTWISH GHOST LOVE SCORE at WACKEN 2013)and then (Kai Hahto drum cam GHOST LOVE SCORE) which is very good, it's him isolated on the drums during the song and compare the differences in style ( Kai adds his own special flare to it, especially at the end) it would be interesting to get your take on the differences, I don't think you've done a double reaction yet, might be something different and fun and you could see the entire band in all their overly talented glory on stage doing one of their signature songs in what I consider to be the gold standard for concerts when they headlined in front of 82,000 people that night but be prepared for Floor she has the most beautiful and powerful voices in music today!

This is an easy warm up track for him. No idea why he seems to be rather unknown in the progressive drummer world. He's easily on the level of Portnoy, Mangini, Donati and the likes.

If we think less, and just do it without thinking. I have a NW cover here. Actually, 2. Kinslayer and Fantasmic ( yes, they are from Finland, where 90% of the music I listen to comes from).

When I first started using double kicks, i would always play triplets rlr rlr rlr.. Now as ive become more comfotable with them its easier to alternate to whatever pattern youre feeling. like rlr lrl rlr lrl...

R_RLRL - In 6/8 or tripleted 8ths right foot stays constant and the left foot hops in on 8th notes 4 and 6.

They do not take an orchestra on tour, but they work directly with the London Symphony Orchestra to create their backing tracks. Knowing Tuomas, he probably scores the damn things himself, lol!

If you check Nightwish live before 2015 you will see their another talented drummer Jukka Nevalainen. Nightwish with Kai Hahto, song "Devil and Deep Dark Ocean" live Buenos Aires is good choice.

Well, I’m kind of an odd duck here. I’m left handed but right foot dominate. I play open on a righty set up. My personal set up has a main ride on my left, secondary snare, hats, main snare, usually one tom up, two down, and the kick slightly angled to the right as if I had double bass drums, multiple crashes, and a second ride where most right hand drummer would have one. I can play open and crossed on a right or left kit. My doubles pattern depends on what I’m doing, but I generally lead with my right for almost all beats. My left leads if I’m playing continuous doubles. I also lead with my left hand when playing 16ths or 32nds on the hats. That’s the main reason for the second snare on the left of the hats, but it also provides a nice filler when wanting to add aa little something else.

Not necessarily for a video, but check out the studio version of Wishmaster. It was actually their old drummer, Jukka Nevelainen back then, but a bar or two after the first guitar solo there's a super interesting tempo on a ride cymbal (I think? I'm not a drummer myself so I'm not 100% sure) that isn't in the live version here that I've always found fascinating! Also it's not out yet but Kai was the session drummer for Darkwoods My Betrothed's upcoming album (their first in like 20ish years) and it's black metal so he'll have lots of blast beats! I remember seeing a short clip of him in the studio but I don't remember if it was on yt or fb or where I saw it

Foot pattern: Triplet Double Bass Drum: R/L/R - L/R/L ad nauseam,- tempo dictates the speed of the eight notes feel ,- most often as a sixtuplet over a four count.
@asxulxetesteronsxez5383 жыл бұрын
Regarding bass patterns, I’m fairly new to double bass, but I lead with whichever foot is advantageous. I practice the usual songs I do but only using my left foot and not my main foot at all. I’m thinking this will lead me to being able to lead and follow with either as needed. As far as triplets go. It depends on circumstance. If the timing is 3/4 I’ll alternate measure leads. Otherwise I double hit with my main foot.
